NVIDIA Readying GeForce 400 Series Mobile GPUs for June?

Call it a slip of the keyboard, the latest online build to order catalogue of Eurocom's performance laptops includes a new choice of graphics board, the "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480M". It's not as much the entry, but details next to it that are interesting. This card, according to Eurocom, is said to be based on the Fermi architecture, is compliant with DirectX 11 (so it's not yet another re-branding), is built on the 40 nm manufacturing process, and has a power rating of [just] 100W. The card is compliant with the MXM 3.0b board standard. Eurocom sets the option's ETA to June 2010, and adds 271€ over the base configuration. In comparison, the GeForce GTX 285M SLI option (based on two G92 GPUs) asks for 339€ over the base configuration.

While by notebooks' standards 100W is on the higher side, it is astoundingly low by standards of NVIDIA's GeForce Fermi architecture, serving as a reasonable indication of NVIDIA's more energy-efficient Fermi-derived GPUs arriving to the scene in June. At the moment, unreliable sources point at NVIDIA expanding its GeForce 400 series lineup further down performance and mainstream segments, coinciding with Computex 2010 held in Taiwan.

Eurocom Preparing GT2xx SLI-Based Desktop Replacement Notebook

Desktop replacement laptop specialists Eurocom is said to be preparing the first mobile platform featuring a NVIDIA GT2xx-series (tenth generation NVIDIA GPU) multi-GPU graphics subsystem. The company's next-generation M980U Emperor already listed on the company website, is specified to hold two Gxx-class GPUs. The company can claim this to be the first mobile platform to even feature a Gxx GPU, let alone a multi-GPU setup.

In its report, GPU Café notes that with GT2xx based mobile GPUs planned for the later half of this year, one can expect the GPUs on the Eurocom notebook to be based on the GT215 GPU, a performance-class GPU that is expected to replace the G92 series GPUs. The GT215 will be built on the 40 nm manufacturing process, from which one can expect energy efficiency. The rest of the notebook's specifications include a Core 2 Extreme processor, and uses the NVIDIA MCP79xi SLI core-logic, 1920×1080 px HD display, up to 8 GB of DDR3 memory and 1.5 TB of storage. Incidentally, Eurocom is also one of the first desktop replacement vendors to be preparing an Intel Core i7-based notebook.

Eurocom Preparing Core i7-powered Laptop

Intel's Core i7 helped strengthen the company's foothold over the desktop CPU market beyond what it already had with the Core 2 series. The level of performance the Core i7 has on offer, comes at an expense of high thermal characteristics, with the rated TDP of 130W to begin with. Eurocom feels it could design a laptop, a portable workstation rather, that features Core i7 series processors. It could be one of the first to do so, with the Phantom i7 D900F.

Holding Core i7 processors in their existing series: models 920, 940, 965 XE, the Phantom i7 holds a 17-inch display with a native resolution of 1920 x 1200 or 1680 x 1050. It features up to 8GB of DDR3 memory and up to 1.5TB of storage using three 500GB hard drives. A Blu-ray or DVD writer drive and a 7-in-1 memory card reader handle removable storage. Graphics will be handled by 1GB variants of GeForce 9800M GTX, Quadro FX 3700 or a soon-to-be-released "G280" graphics accelerator. Connectivity is care of Gigabit Ethernet, WiFi, an ExpressCard slot, and optionally Bluetooth. A built-in TV-tuner and a 12-cell battery make for the rest of the package. The Phantom i7 is slated for May.

Eurocom Lets Loose D901C Phantom-X 'Server' Laptop

Eurocom has launched the D901C Phantom-X laptop, a piece of machinery you don't see every day. It is no accident that the word server is being used in the title. The Phantom-X can be configured with a server based Intel Xeon X3360 quad-core chip running at 2.83GHz (45nm, 12MB of L2 cache), 17-inch 1920x1200 display, a 2x Blu-ray burner, up to 8GB DDR2-800 of RAM, a pair of GeForce 8800M Go GTX graphics chips, three 64GB solid state disk drives (each one of these adds around $1400 to the price a piece), as well as Windows Server 2008 OS. The overall price of the laptop with all optional parts maxed out is roughly $10 000, not a bad deal for a laptop (joke). If you ask about the battery life, it's a twelve cell Lithium Ion one that will power the laptop for an hour. So if you're looking for the ultimate laptop this is probably the best one you can find. An updated model that will have the physical space to integrate up to six hard drives for up to 3TB of storage space is also planned for September.
