Jingjia Micro JM9 GPU Series Targeting GTX 1080 Performance Tapes Out

The Chinese Electronics company Jingjia Micro have recently completed the tapeout of their JM9 GPU series almost 2 years after they first announced the lineup. The JM9 series will consist of two GPUs with the entry-level JM9231 targeting GTX 1050 performance while the higher-end JM9271 aims for the GTX 1080. The JM9231 is stated to feature a clock speed above 1.5 GHz, 8 GB of GDDR5 memory, and will provide 2 TFLOPS of performance within a 150 W TDP through a PCIe Gen3 x16 interface. The JM9271 increases the clock speed to above 1.8 GHz and is paired with 16 GB of HBM memory which should offer 8 TFLOPS of single-precision performance to rival the GTX 1080. The card manages to do this within a TDP package of 200 W and also includes PCIe Gen4 x16 support. The two cards both support HDMI 2.0 in addition to DisplayPort 1.3 for the JM9231 and DisplayPort 1.4 for the JM9271.

While the JM9271 may target GTX 1080 performance it only features OpenGL and OpenCL API support lacking DirectX or Vulkan compatibility greatly reducing its use for gaming. The cards were originally expected to be available in 2020 but after various delays they are now ready to enter production. These products are highly unlikely to make their way outside of the Chinese mainland and if they did we wouldn't expect them to have much impact on the global market.

Intel DG2 GPU with 256 Execution Units Offers GTX 1050 Performance

We have been receiving several leaks for Intel's upcoming DG2 GPUs with a 256 Execution Unit model recently appearing on Geekbench paired with a 14-core Alder Lake mobile CPU. The Alder Lake mobile processor featured an integrated Xe GPU with 96 Execution Units which were also benchmarked. The 256 Execution Unit graphics card tested is likely derived from the mid-range DG2-384 GPU. The 96 EU DG2 iGPU featured a maximum frequency of 1.2 GHz while the 256 EU variant increased that to 1.4 GHz. The DG2-256 scored an OpenCL score of 18,450 points in the Geekbench 5 benchmark which places it at GTX 1050 performance level. The DG2-96 integrated GPU scored 6,500 points which is comparable to a GTX 460. While these performance numbers are low it is important to keep in mind that these are just early results from a mid-range mobile offering and Intel is planning to release cards with 512 Execution Units which should compete with the RTX 3070 Ti and 6700 XT.

Gigabyte Announces Availability of Two New, Smaller NVIDIA GTX 1050 3 GB Graphics Cards

Gigabyte has announced two new SKUs that join theirprevious interpretation of NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 1050 3 GB graphics card. Adding (or maybe subtracting, on account of it being smaller) to their lineup is the new GTX 1050 3 GB D5, which features a shorter PCB (172 mm x 113 mm x 30 mm, minus 19 mm) when compared to the original 3 GB OC model (for reference, 191 mm long, 111 mm wide, and 36 mm in height). The reduced footprint of the graphics card means there's now a single fan (now at 90 mm instead of 2x 80 mm) at work on cooling the GPU - but it's such a lean one that that factor should pose no problem. Additionally, the clocks are slightly lower on this card, and adhere to NVIDIA's reference of 1392 MHz base and 1518 MHz boost. Connectivity-wise, there's 1x DVI-D, 1x HDMI 2.0b and 1x DisplayPort 1.4 port (up to three simultaneous displays are supported).

The other, more interesting model, is the GTX 1050 OC Low Profile 3G. Like the name implies, this is a low-profile graphics card, best suited for space-starved enclosures. Coming in at 167mm x 68.9mm x 37mm, it's as small as this type of card has ever been in Gigabyte's lineup. The low profile version should feature higher performance than the D5 one, since it clocks in at 1404 MHz (1544 MHz boost clock) in the default Game Mode. OC Mode brings the graphics card's clocks to 1430 MHz and 1569 MHz respectively. Likely owing to an expected HTPC usage for these graphics cards, Gigabyte has added an extra HDMI 2.0 port to this card, bringing connectivity to 1x DVI-D, 2x HDMI 2.0b, and 1x DisplayPort 1.4 port.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 3GB Memory Bus-width Confirmed: A Major Trade-off

NVIDIA's entry-level GeForce GTX 1050 launched in a new 3 GB variant, earlier this month, with 50 percent more memory than the 2 GB which the original GTX 1050 launched with. But there's a major catch that's relegated to the fine-print of the card's specifications on NVIDIA website, and something most NVIDIA AIC (add-in-card) partners won't particularly blare on their product packaging anywhere near as loudly as the memory amount, and that's memory bus width. The 3 GB GTX 1050 has 50 percent more memory than the original GTX 1050, but a 25% narrower memory bus, at just 96-bit.

When you look at a GTX 1050 3 GB graphics card PCB, you'll likely only find three 8 Gb (1 GB) memory chips, with one set of memory chip traces blanked out. It's not even like NVIDIA compensated for the narrower memory bus with higher memory clocks. The chips run at the same 7 Gbps as the original's, yielding just 84 GB/s memory bandwidth, compared to the original's 112 GB/s. The CUDA core count of the GTX 1050 3 GB is the same as the GTX 1050 Ti, with 768 CUDA cores, which twitch their thumbs as data is moved between the GPU and memory over Pony Express. Besides more CUDA cores, the GPU clocks are marginally higher, with 1392 MHz base and 1518 MHz GPU Boost, compared to 1354/1455 MHz of the original. NVIDIA, which recently sermonized the industry on "making products easier for consumers to identify" with its stillborn GPP, is once again caught concealing a major specification. To find it, you'll need to visit the product page of the GTX 1050, scroll all the way down to the specs sheet, and click on "view full specs" to reveal the memory bus width.

NVIDIA Allegedly Working on GeForce GTX 1050 with 3GB Memory

According to a rumor originated from Chinese media Expreview, NVIDIA is preparing a brand-new variant of the GeForce GTX 1050 graphics card with 3GB of onboard memory. The additional memory could potentially increase the graphics card's performance in certain situations. However, Expreview speculates that NVIDIA might actually reduce the memory bus to 96 bits instead of maintaining the 128-bit bus. If this was to happen, actual performance on the GeForce GTX 1050 3GB might be even worse than the normal variant. Now, only time will tell if the rumors are true. If the 3GB variant does make it to the shelves, it would probably be exclusive to the Chinese market like the GeForce GTX 1060 with 5GB memory.
