Graphics Card Market Up Sequentially in Q3, NVIDIA Gains as AMD Slips

According to a new report by Jon Peddie Research, the graphics add-in-board market has seen shipments of 14.5 million units in the third quarter of 2013. The 14.5 million translate into a 3.9% increase compared to Q2 but a steep, 17% fall over Q3 2012. The on-quarter boost is in line with seasonality but is far less than the 10-year average which is 12%.

In Q3 2013 NVIDIA was on top with a market share of 64.5% - up from 62% in Q2 (an up from 64.0% in Q3 2012), while AMD grabbed 35.5% after having 38% of the market in the previous quarter (and 35.7% in Q2 2012). Matrox and S3 were almost non-existent, with 0.0% in the chart.

Graphics Add-in Board Shipments Seasonally Down Just 2% From Last Quarter

Jon Peddie Research (JPR), the industry's research and consulting firm for graphics and multimedia, announced estimated graphics Add-in Board (AIB) shipments and sales' market share for Q1'12. The JPR AIB Report tracks computer graphics boards, which carry discrete graphics chips. They are used in desktop PCs, workstations, servers, and other devices such as scientific instruments. They may be sold as after-market products directly to customers or they may be factory installed. In all cases, they represent the higher-end of the graphics industry as discrete chips rather than integrated processors.

We found that AIB shipments during Q1'12 did not behave according to past years with regard to seasonality, and was lower on a year-to-year comparison and on a quarter-to-quarter comparison for the quarter. Overall, and for the PC market in general, 2011 has turned out to be an anomalous year as businesses and consumers take their own path to recovery.

Matrox Introduces SMD-2 for Large-Scale High-Density IP Video Decoding

Matrox Graphics Inc. today introduces the Matrox SMD-2 streaming media decoder, a second-generation universal IP video decode solution designed to decode - in parallel - large numbers of network video streams in different resolutions and formats. The ideal building block for large-scale IP video decode applications, each SMD-2 board can simultaneously decode up to 64 QCIF, 16 D1, or 2 HD 1080 streams.
