NVIDIA Announces the GeForce GTX 10 Series for Notebooks

NVIDIA today announced the GeForce GTX 10-series for notebooks. The lineup includes three SKUs - the GeForce GTX 1080 Mobile, the GTX 1070 Mobile, and the GTX 1060 Mobile. Thanks to huge energy-efficiency gains with the "Pascal" architecture and the new 16 nm silicon fab process, this round of NVIDIA's mobile GPUs aren't "gimped out" in comparison its desktop discrete GPU lineup, in that they SKUs don't feature fewer CUDA cores to their corresponding desktop counterparts.

The lineup begins with the GTX 1080 Mobile. Based on the GP104 silicon, this chip features all 2,560 CUDA cores, 160 TMUs, and 64 ROPs physically present on the chip. The chip is endowed with 8 GB of 256-bit GDDR5X memory ticking at 10 Gbps. The core clock speeds remain unknown. The GTX 1070 Mobile is an interesting SKU in that it is better endowed than its desktop counterpart. It features 2,048 CUDA cores (the desktop GTX 1070 features 1,920), 128 TMUs, 64 ROPs, and 8 GB of 256-bit GDDR5 memory running at 8 Gbps. This chip features 1443 MHz core, and 1645 MHz GPU Boost. At the bottom of the pile is the GTX 1060 Mobile. Based on the GP106 silicon, this chip features 1,280 CUDA cores, 80 TMUs, 48 ROPs, and 6 GB of 192-bit GDDR5 memory running at 8 Gbps; with clock speeds of 1405 MHz core, with 1569 MHz GPU Boost.

ASUS Teases Upcoming G Series Notebooks Powered by "Pascal" GPUs

ASUS teased an upcoming Republic of Gamers G-Series notebook. It didn't stop at the teaser pics, and went on to tease performance numbers of the untitled "GXXX" graphics processor at the heart of this beast. We'll go out on a limb here and guess that it's a new mobile GPU based on the "Pascal" architecture; more so because ASUS is claiming that it's faster than even the desktop GeForce GTX TITAN X, and has 3DMark 11 Performance-present score to show for that. ASUS plans to exhibit the notebook at the 2016 Computex; and it's becoming increasingly clear that the third GP104-based SKU promised for June 2016 could be a mobile chip after all.

NVIDIA Intros GeForce 359.12 Hotfix Notebook Driver

NVIDIA released a hotfix GeForce 359.12 driver for Notebooks, in an attempt to mitigate general game crashes noticed by users of notebooks running the GeForce GTX 860M mobile GPU, with recent R359 series drivers. Besides fixing this issue, the driver's feature-set is consistent with the recent R359.06 WHQL release. As a hotfix driver, it lacks WHQL certification. If you're particular about that, you could revert to WHQL drivers pre-dating version 359.00.

NVIDIA Releases Full-featured GeForce GTX 980 for Notebooks

NVIDIA released a reference board for a full-featured GeForce GTX 980 GPU for the notebook platform. This is different from the GeForce GTX 980M launched last October, which features just 1,536 of the 2,048 CUDA cores physically present on the GM204 silicon. The new GTX 980 for notebooks is targeted at large desktop-replacement gaming notebooks, and features all components present on the silicon.

The GeForce GTX 980 for Notebooks reference board features 4-8 GB of GDDR5 memory across the chip's 256-bit wide memory bus, a 4-8 phase VRM, and clock speeds which are close to the desktop reference board. The GPU is clocked around 1175 MHz, and the memory ticks at 7.00 GHz (GDDR5-effective). It's primed for overclocking beyond 1400 MHz core, and 7.50 GHz memory. It also offers fan-control for users, that adjusts clock speeds according to the fan-curve. Various gaming notebook makers are announcing variants of their premium notebooks featuring this board.

NVIDIA Restores Overclocking on GTX 900M, Again

NVIDIA re-enabled overclocking on its GeForce GTX 900M series mobile GPUs, by releasing a new hotfix driver (GeForce 353.00 Hotfix). Launch drivers originally allowed overclocking on NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 900M series mobile GPUs. NVIDIA disabled overclocking with its R347 drivers, stating that overclocking was originally allowed due to a bug, drawing outrage from the PC enthusiast community. NVIDIA then re-enabled overclocking with its 347.88 drivers, with a quasi-apology. Then, without making much noise, the company disabled overclocking (or the "clock-block," as the enthusiasts are calling it), with its R350 drivers, which stayed on even as the drivers graduated to R352 series.

Following our May 21st report uncovering this, the company slipped out a driver hotfix, late last night. Version 353.00 Hotfix comes with a single item on its release notes, which reads "Fixes a regression that prevented overclocking the GPU on some GeForce Notebooks" (read: Whoops!). So gaming notebook owners have the freedom of overclocking their GPUs to tweak up eye-candy on the latest games, such as GTA V and The Witcher 3, which would have been buggy and unplayable, if users reverted to older R347 drivers, just to be able to overclock.
