OCZ Shows off New 2.5-inch Summit Solid-State Drives

Our friends at PC Perspective talk about a new series of OCZ solid-state drives that is supposed to hit retail shelves sooner or later. Summit series, as they'll be called, are housed in a 2.5-inch shell and feature a brand new controller from Samsung. The MLC flash memory drives use standard SATA 3.0Gbps interface to transfer data. Another characteristic that's worth noting is that the Summit series SSDs feature 64MB of cache, that helps the drives to achieve read/write speeds of up to 208MB/s and 172MB/s respectively. The OCZ Summit will be available in 250GB, 120GB and 60GB models. A full in-depth preview based on an engineering sample Summit drive is accessible here.

OCZ Preparing New 910W Silencer PSU

OCZ is preparing a new power supply under its PC Power & Cooling brand. This PSU is part of a series of products lined-up for launch from the PC Power & Cooling subsidiary of OCZ. It provides 910W of continuous output. It boasts a massive 74A +12V rail and an 80-Plus Silver rating, which keeps its efficiency above 85%, a remarkable feat for a PSU with a heavy-duty 74A circuit. The Silencer 910W was pictured as a part of the Tech Report's CES coverage of OCZ's booth.

The PSU uses the standard PC Power & Cooling design, black in colour, no modular connections, and an 80mm fan to cool the unit. The PSU is NVIDIA SLI certified for use in multi-GPU systems. The Silencer 910W will reach stores soon with a price tag of US $199. It will be backed by a 5-year warranty.

OCZ Readies New Apex Series SSDs

OCZ now has a formidable lineup of solid state drives (SSDs) based on the multi-level cell (MLC) design, top to bottom with the Vertex series on the top with read/write speeds of 200 MB/s and 160 MB/s respectively, aided by a large 64 MB cache; along with the entry-level Solid series offering speeds of 155 MB/s, 90 MB/s.

The company is now looking to fill the price/performance gap between Vertex and Solid series with the introduction of the Apex series SSDs. The new set of SSDs will replace the Core series on the shelves bringing better performance at similar price-points. DailyTech took a few quick snaps of these SSDs in its preliminary coverage of the CES. The Apex series SSDs will come in capacities of 30GB, 60GB, 120GB and 250GB, and will offer read/write speeds of up to 230 MB/s (read) and 160 MB/s (write). OCZ Could Bring NIA to Gaming Consoles

OCZ Technology could take the Neural Impulse Actuator (NIA), a device that provides input by interpreting brain waves to a PC, to gaming consoles where they replace the function of game-controllers. Using the device you could play games with complex and sometimes rapid control such as Unreal Tournament or Crysis without using your hands on a PC, proving it could provide a device input at a very rapid rate. TechRadar met Tobias Brinkmann, director of marketing at OCZ. Brinkmann told that the company was looking into the possibility of developing the NIA to function as an input device for major gaming consoles.

"It's definitely something we are looking into," he said. "The thing we think would be most cool is to get the NIA working with the Nintendo Wii - that would be good. But of course it would be great if we could get it working with all the consoles." Brinkmann also revealed that in the past Microsoft made attempts to acquire the technology from OCZ which was turned down by OCZ, pointing at the potential this technology has.
