PNY Announces LX2030 and LX3030 M.2 NVMe Gen3 x4 SSDs for Chia Plotting

PNY announced today the launch of the LX2030 and LX3030 line of ultra high endurance SSDs to the company's assortment of solid-state drives. The new LX families of SSDs offer ever higher levels of endurance designed for "proof of space and time" applications like Chia (XCH) Plotting.

The PNY LX2030 and LX3030 M.2 NVMe SSDs are the ideal solution for "proof of space and time" applications like plotting Chia Coin. To secure the blockchain, the data needs to be first created in a process called "plotting", which is only required once per plot file. This process is write intensive, so a desirable SSD for plotting has high sustained write bandwidth and endurance (TBW, or terabytes written). Typically this level of write performance and endurance was only seen on enterprise class SSDs.

PNY Quietly Reduces XLR8 CS3030 M.2 NVMe SSD Endurance by Almost 80%

(Update May 6: Added PNY's official word on the endurance changes)

PNY has quietly reduced the endurance rating (TBW - TeraBytes Written) for its XLR8 CS3030 M.2 NVMe SSD by almost 80%. The "quietly" comes from the fact that the company only deemed it necessary to update the product specifications on their website, and didn't announce any such changes via press release or any other means. Hence, prospective buyers who might look to launch reviews of this NVMe SSD so as to make a decision regarding its purchase may be led astray by the (then) quoted TBW ratings, which are actually no longer relevant for samples of this SSD - at the very least for any model manufactured post-specifications change on their website.

There are no other changes to specifications - neither in capacity, nor in Read/Write speeds. However, endurance has taken an almost 80% dive in the worst case scenarios - those of the 2 TB and 500 GB capacities, which saw reductions from their respective 3,115 TBW and 800 TBW down to 660 TBW and 170 TBW - or 78.8%. The 1 TB capacity takes a 78.4% dive in endurance (1665 TBW down to 360 TBW) and the 250 GB model is the least affected one, whilst still losing out 55.3% of its rated endurance (380 TBW down to 170 TBW).

PNY Outs XLR8 GeForce RTX 3060 REVEL EPIC-X RGB Single Fan Edition Graphics Card

PNY today rolled out the XLR8 GeForce RTX 3060 REVEL EPIC-X RGB Single Fan Edition, its third custom-design RTX 3060 graphics card. This one is targeted at compact gaming desktop builds, and is just 17 cm long, 12.5 cm tall, and strictly 2 slots thick. The card uses a dense aluminium fin-stack heatsink that's ventilated by a single 100 mm fan. The cooler features an RGB LED-illuminated GeForce RTX logo along the top. The card pulls power from a single 8-pin PCIe power connector, which is sufficient for the 170 W typical board power for the card's NVIDIA-reference clock speeds of up to 1777 MHz GPU Boost, and 15 Gbps memory clock. Display outputs include three DisplayPort 1.4a and one HDMI 2.1 connectors. The company is backing the cards with 3-year warranties. It didn't reveal pricing.

PNY Intros CS1030 Series Value M.2 NVMe SSDs

PNY today introduced the CS1030 line of value M.2 NVMe SSDs. Built in the M.2-2280 form-factor, the drive takes advantage of PCI-Express 3.0 x4 host interface, and NVMe 1.3 protocol. The company doesn't mention controller or the type of 3D NAND flash memory used, but it's likely that the drive is using a 4-channel DRAM-less setup. Capacity-based variants include 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB. Among these, the 256 GB model offers faster reads, with up to 2,500 MB/s sequential reads, but with up to 1,100 MB/s sequential writes. The 512 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB variants read at speeds of up to 2,100 MB/s, and up to 1,900 MB/s sequential writes. PNY is backing the drives with 5-year warranties.

GPUs to See Price Increase Due to Import Tariffs, Other PC Components to Follow

Yesterday, we have reported that ASUS is officially increasing the prices of their graphics cards and motherboards, due to increased component and logistics costs. What the company meant by that was not exactly clear to everyone, as it looked like the company has adjusted to the current market prices exceeding the MSRP of components like graphics cards. The GPUs are today selling at much higher prices compared to the original MSRP and it is representing a real problem for consumers. Today, we get to see what is the underlying problem behind the announcement we saw yesterday and if we are going to see more of that in the close future.

According to the New York Times, the Chinese import tariff exemptions have expired with the arrival of a new year (2021) and we can expect the tariffs to start from 7.5%-25%, which will massively increase component costs. A Reddit user has noted that MSRP will increase about $80 for every major GPU manufacturer like ASUS, GIGABYTE, PNY, Zotac, etc. so we are expecting MSRP adjustment from other companies to follow just like ASUS did. The import tariff exemptions are also supposed to increase MSRPs of other PC components like motherboards, SSDs, PSUs, cases... everything without exemption. As a product of a trade war between China and the Trump administration, it remains a question will these tariffs get easier shortly, so consumers can afford their desired components.

Ethereum Mining Farm with 78 RTX 3080 Graphics Cards Spotted

Availability for NVIDIA and AMD's latest graphics cards is dire, to say the least; the average consumer finds their stocks to be spotty, at best, with available cards quickly dropping into oblivion. Scalpers and their associates are part of the problem, as is already well-known; however, another element to this same problem - at least, when it comes to numerous graphics cards finding their way to the same consumers, instead of being available for others - is mining. Because while we are definitely not facing the same shortages as we were back in the day where everyone and their mother wanted to get into mining using our tried and true graphics cards, mining farms are still a reality, and they are making use of NVIDIA (and AMD's) latest graphics cards as well.

Case in point, a mining farm running as many as 78 PNY RTX 3080 graphics cards has surfaced in Las Vegas. This 78-card mining farm was apparently put together with a $100,000 budget (around $1,199 per card, not considering other installation costs). For that money, the mining farm should be capable of around 6,474 MH/s (83 MH/s per RTX 3080), which amounts to a monthly Ethereum production of around 17.3 ETH per month (pricing fluctuates, so we won't give an estimation on dollar value for each ETH). Associated electricity running costs with such a system, including cooling, should pan out around 23.4 kW (with an estimated 300 W of power for each card) at $8.34 per Kw.

PNY, ZOTAC NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti Cards Pictured

Leaks and product images of NVIDIA's upcoming GTX 1070 Ti graphics card continue to surface from all manufacturers. This time, it's two PNY graphics card models, and one ZOTAC that have found themselves brought to the limelight. The PNY models don't deviate too much from the already known leaks: they follow the same engineering pattern of one blower-style cooled graphics card, marrying NVIDIA's reference design with some different aesthetics engineering from the AIB partners, and one fully custom model. PNY's particular take on the custom model features only two fans, which seems to make this design a distinct one from the fully custom, three-fan XLR8 design they had for the GTX 1070 (non Ti version).
