AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT Pricing Slides to Below its $500 MSRP, RX 7700 XT Below $440

With the introduction of the new GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER at $599, prices of the regular GeForce RTX 4070 are on a downward trend, below even its $549 NVIDIA MSRP, and can be frequently found for as low as $534. This is applying pressure on the AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT, which had originally debuted at $499, with custom design cards originally retailing for upward of $530. The availability of RTX 4070 around that price range has pushed some of these custom RX 7800 XT to below the $500, or down to the AMD MSRP of $499. One such example is the Gigabyte RX 7800 XT Gaming OC, which can be had bang on the AMD MSRP.

This has also had a cascading effect on the pricing of the Radeon RX 7700 XT, with custom design cards frequently trending below the company's $450 MSRP for this SKU. Gigabyte's RX 7700 XT Gaming OC is listed on Newegg for $439, while several other custom designs, such as the Sapphire Pulse, ASRock Challenger, and PowerColor Fighter are listed on the $449 MSRP—they were originally selling for around $470. Both the RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT are recommended by AMD for 1440p maxed out AAA gaming, and compete directly with the RTX 4070 series. The RX 7800 XT beats the RTX 4070, while the RX 7700 XT isn't too far behind it, while being significantly ahead of the RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB in performance.

ASUS GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER Dual OC Snapped—Goodbye 8-pin

Here are some of the first pictures of the ASUS GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER Dual OC, the company's close-to-MSRP custom-design implementation of the upcoming RTX 4070 SUPER, which is expected to be announced on January 8, with reviews and retail availability a week later. The card very closely resembles the design of the RTX 4070 Dual OC, but with one major difference—the single 8-pin PCIe power connector makes way for a 16-pin 12VHPWR. Considering that the ASUS Dual OC series tends to come with a nominal factory OC at power limits matching NVIDIA reference, this is the first sign that the RTX 4070 SUPER in general might have typical graphics power (TGP) above what a single 8-pin could fulfill, and so we've given a 12VHPWR, just like every RTX 4070 Ti. The cards will include an NVIDIA-designed adapter that converts two 8-pin PCIe to a 12VHPWR, with its signal pins set to tell the graphics card that it can deliver 300 W of continuous power.

The GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER is based on the same AD104 silicon as the RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Ti, with its ASIC code rumored to be "AD104-350." The SKU allegedly enables 56 out of 60 streaming multiprocessors (SM) present on the silicon, giving it 7,168 out of 7,680 CUDA cores. This is a big increase from the 5,888 CUDA cores (46 SM) that the vanilla RTX 4070 is configured with. The memory subsystem is expected to be unchanged from the RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Ti—12 GB of 21 Gbps GDDR6X across a 192-bit memory interface; leaving NVIDIA with one possible lever, the ROP count. While the RTX 4070 Ti has 80 ROPs, the RTX 4070 has 64. It remains to be seen how many the RTX 4070 SUPER gets. Its rumored TGP of 225 W is behind the switch to 12VHPWR connectors.

Throne and Liberty went live on December 7.

ASUS Intros GeForce RTX 4070 Turbo Graphics Card with Lateral Flow Cooler

ASUS introduced the GeForce RTX 4070 Turbo, a performance segment graphics card with a lateral blower-type cooling solution that should make it ideal for restrictive airflow environments (such as a stack of them in an AI processing box). The card is strictly 2 slots thick, no taller than what constitutes full-height for addon cards (11.1 cm), and is 26.9 cm long. It lacks a backplate, so it could give a little more breathing room to its neighboring card. Its sole power connector, an 8-pin PCIe, is located at the tail end of the card, instead of the top, for additional clearance.

Internally, the ASUS Turbo RTX 4070 cooling solution features a copper base-plate, which conveys heat to an aluminium channel stack that's ventilated by a lateral blower. ASUS has given this blower a high endurance dual ball-bearing. The RTX 4070 GPU at the heart of the card runs at NVIDIA reference specs, with a 2475 MHz boost frequency, and a 21 Gbps GDDR6X memory speed. It features 12 GB of it across a 192-bit memory bus. There are two SMD switches on the card, the "Turbo" switch overrides software fan control and holds the fan on a steep fan-curve, hitting 100% even; while the VM_SW switch toggles between a "Quiet" and "Performance" mode, we don't know if this uses a dual-BIOS mechanism, or is a physical toggle for ASUS GPU Tweak software. ASUS didn't release pricing information.

GALAX Intros China-exclusive GeForce RTX 4070 20th Anniversary Edition

GALAX is a much older brand than it looks, dating back to 2003, when it did business as "Galaxy," selling custom-design GeForce 400 series graphics cards with its signature shade of deep blue for the PCB, and Zalman-sourced coolers. The company is celebrating its 20th anniversary, at least in its largest market of China, where it launched a special edition GeForce RTX 4070 Ada graphics card, called simply the 20th Anniversary Edition.

The card features an all-white look, and an interesting cooler airflow design. The card is no more than 2 slots thick, and features a slender aluminium fin-stack heatsink. Two of its three fans are located on the obverse side of the card. There is an intake where you'd expect the third fan to be, which is actually on the reverse side of the card, blowing outward (pulling air through the heatsink, much like NVIDIA's dual-axial flow-through cooler in some of its Founders Edition cards. The card uses a single 8-pin PCIe power connector, which has been tucked away behind a magnetic cover. The card offers factory overclocked speeds of 2610 MHz maximum boost, compared to 2475 MHz reference (+5.5%). The company didn't reveal pricing.

MSI Readies GeForce RTX 40-series Ventus 3X E Graphics Cards

MSI is ready with a new line of cost-effective custom-design GeForce RTX 40-series "Ada" graphics cards, dubbed the Ventus 3X E-series, where the letter E denotes "essentials." According to Hassan Mujtaba from Wccftech, these cards are characterized by certain structural improvements, and for certain models, a different set of display outputs than the regular Ventus 3X series. While the current Ventus 3X series sticks to the NVIDIA baseline spec, with three DisplayPorts and one HDMI, some of the new Ventus 3X E-series comes with two DisplayPorts and two HDMI connectors instead of one.

MSI is planning to release Ventus 3X E-series SKUs based on the GeForce RTX 4070, the RTX 4070 Ti, and the RTX 4090. There are SKUs that stick to NVIDIA reference clock speeds and are priced at the NVIDIA MSRP; while their OC sub-variants come with a minor factory overclock. What's important to note here, is that the "E" brand extension isn't part of the Ventus 3X brand itself, and as such, the box art for these new cards is indistinguishable from the older Ventus 3X cards. You need to pay attention to the long-form model number printed near the barcodes, which has "E" or "E1" printed next to "Ventus 3X."

Undervolted Radeon RX 7800 XT Gets Closer to GeForce RTX 4070 Efficiency Levels

Techtesters, a Dutch online publication and YouTube channel, took the time to investigate whether AMD's Radeon RX 7800 XT 16 GB GPU can compete with NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 4070 12 GB GPU in power efficiency stakes. Naturally, Team Red loses with their new mid-ranger running under normal conditions when lined up against its main rival - ranging from 252 W to 286 W versus 200 W (sometimes 196 W during gaming sessions) respectively. Nada Overbeeke (of Techtesters) chose to set a 90% power limit for their main subject matter—Gigabyte's custom design Navi 32-based Gaming OC model—through AMD software adjustments.

Its "aggressive" 200 W undervolted state was compared to stock performance in a number of modern game environments (refer to the charts below). The Gigabyte RX 7800 XT Gaming OC—using stock settings—consumed around 40% more power while managing only a 9% performance increase over its 200 W undervolted guise. VideoCardz notes that AMD's reference model requires 24% more power at stock: "As mentioned, a 9% performance boost should not be underestimated, but the substantial reduction in power consumption also resulted in quieter GPU operation and lower temperatures." It would have been interesting to see Techtesters undervolt their RTX 4070 FE candidate as well, but emphasis seemed to be placed on the newer card.

Schenker XMG CORE 16 Gets Ryzen 7 7840HS and GeForce RTX 4070

With the XMG CORE 16, XMG's CORE series gets a new 16-inch model, whose features are based on the current top models of the NEO seri
es in many details. Powered by AMD's Ryzen 7 7840HS and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 or 4060, the laptop is aimed at the upper mid-range, but also adds features from the premium segment. These include, for example, an optional keyboard with CHERRY MX Ultra Low Profile Tactile switches, a 99 Wh battery and a liquid metal thermal compound for cooling the processor and graphics card. For the first time, there is also a configuration option for up to 96 GB DDR5 RAM.

The XMG CORE 16 (L23) is the first laptop in the CORE series to come in a 16-inch format and, alongside the APEX 15 and APEX 17, is now the third model to be based on an AMD Phoenix CPU featuring the Ryzen 7 7840HS with 8 cores and 16 threads. XMG offers the laptop with either an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 or an RTX 4060, each with a graphics power of 140 watts (115 watts plus 25 watts Dynamic Boost). A composite cooling system with four heat pipes, separate heat sinks on all four air outlets and liquid metal for improved heat transfer from both the CPU and GPU is utilised to provide high continuous performance.
