Apple today announced changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store impacting developers' apps in the European Union (EU) to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The changes include more than 600 new APIs, expanded app analytics, functionality for alternative browser engines, and options for processing app payments and distributing iOS apps. Across every change, Apple is introducing new safeguards that reduce—but don't eliminate—new risks the DMA poses to EU users. With these steps, Apple will continue to deliver the best, most secure experience possible for EU users.

The new options for processing payments and downloading apps on iOS open new avenues for malware, fraud and scams, illicit and harmful content, and other privacy and security threats. That's why Apple is introducing protections—including Notarization for iOS apps, an authorization for marketplace developers, and disclosures on alternative payments—to reduce risks and deliver the best, most secure experience possible for users in the EU. Even with these safeguards in place, many risks remain.

Apple today previewed macOS High Sierra, the latest version of the world's most advanced desktop operating system, delivering new core storage, video and graphics technologies that pave the way for future innovation on the Mac. macOS High Sierra offers an all-new file system, support for High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) and an update to Metal, Apple's advanced graphics technology that powers everything from machine learning to virtual reality content creation. macOS High Sierra also includes a number of refinements to the apps Mac users enjoy every day, including Photos, Safari and Mail.

Apple today announced that OS X Yosemite, the latest major release of the world's most advanced desktop operating system, is available as a free upgrade for Mac users from the Mac App Store. Yosemite delivers a fresh, modern look and introduces Continuity features that make it easy to hand off activities between Mac and iOS devices and even make and receive iPhone calls from your Mac. Yosemite also includes a new Today view, a redesigned Spotlight and updated versions of Safari, Mail, Messages and iTunes.

The new Today view in Notification Center gives you a quick look at everything you need to know, all in one place; iCloud Drive is located within the Finder and can store files of any type; and Safari has a new streamlined design that puts the most important controls at your fingertips. Mail makes editing and sending attachments easier than ever; Handoff lets you start an activity on one device and pass it to the other; and Instant Hotspot makes using your iPhone's hotspot as easy as connecting to a Wi-Fi network. Yosemite even gives you the ability to make iPhone calls on your Mac.

Today, mobile arch-rivals Apple and Google have both released updates for their PC/Mac browsers, Safari and Chrome. Apple made available the 5.1.4 version of Safari for both Windows and Mac OS, while Google has served up the Chrome 18.0.1025.56 Beta for Windows, Mac OS and Linux.

The new Chrome Beta includes the following highlights:

- GPU acceleration of the Canvas 2D is now disabled by default and can be enabled in about:flags
- Disabled the image transport surface on Windows Vista and 7. For GPU accelerated content GPU process now renders directly to the window.
- Core Animation plugins no longer trigger GPU accelerated compositing on the Mac.

According to data collected by Net Applications, February saw both Microsoft Internet Explorer and Google Chome losing some browser market share which was quickly picked up by Apple's Safari, Mozilla's Firefox and Opera.

Last month's numbers still have IE on top with 52.84% of the market (down from 52.96% in January), while Firefox kept its silver medal by securing a 20.92% share (20.88%). On third place we have Chrome with 18.90% (18.94% in the previous month), while on fourth Safari has once again passed the 5% mark, topping 5.24% (4.90%). Opera was fifth with a 1.71% share (1.67%).

With three successors and design limitations posing as hurdles for security updates, Microsoft's iconic Internet Explorer 6 (MSIE 6) web-browser had been deemed a security vulnerability for anyone using it, and Microsoft undertook a campaign to get the world to update their MSIE to the latest MSIE 9. With December 2011 web-browser usage statistics out by several sources, the usage of MSIE 6 in the United States dropped below the 1% mark, causing Microsoft claim that the United States bid goodbye to MSIE 6. The MSIE team celebrated this development with a ceremonious cake and a little afterhours party.

MSIE 6 now makes up 0.9% of the US web-browser market. Czech Republic, Portugal, The Philippines, Ukraine and Mexico, are the other countries where MSIE 6 holds under 1% of the market. The browser is used by 25% of Chinese internet users (a huge number). Interestingly, South Korea, which has some of the fastest consumer ISP networks in the world, has 7.2% usage. 5.9% of Japanese netizens are still stuck to the decade-old browser, and so are 5.4% Indian users. Overall, MSIE 6 still holds 7.7% of the global web-browser market-share, which is respectable, considering it's greater than those of Apple Safari (Mac/PC), and Opera, and disturbing, considering it is a very vulnerable piece of software unless it's used for closed VPN intranets. Hot on the heels of our previous story of Apple Macs falling prey to a DDoS trojan, we now have another Mac trojan come on the market, as explained by Sophos. Yes, the Apple platform must indeed be becoming more popular to get this one. It's an unfortunate fact of life that the popularity of any computing platform, including smartphones, can be judged by the number of criminals who will attack it. This little nasty, called OSX/Miner-D or 'DevilRobber', hijacks Mac OS X to perform various tricks, which include minting Bitcoins (the virtual and now virtually worthless currency) stealing usernames and passwords (of course) taking screenshots and stealing the victim's Bitcoin wallet while it's at it, if there is one. And for good measure:

it runs a script that copies information to a file called dump.txt regarding truecrypt data, Vidalia (TOR plugin for Firefox), your Safari browsing history, and .bash_history.

So, now the criminals also know about all the sites one has visited, eroding user privacy even more. It looks like this malware has covered all the bases, but wait, there's more.

Apple announced that Mac OS X Lion, the eighth major release of the world's most advanced operating system with more than 250 new features and 3,000 new developer APIs, will be available to customers in July as a download from the Mac App Store for $29.99. Some of the amazing features in Lion include: new Multi-Touch gestures; system-wide support for full screen apps; Mission Control, an innovative view of everything running on your Mac; the Mac App Store, the best place to find and explore great software, built right into the OS; Launchpad, a new home for all your apps; and a completely redesigned Mail app.

"The Mac has outpaced the PC industry every quarter for five years running and with OS X Lion we plan to keep extending our lead," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "The best version of OS X yet, Lion is packed with innovative features such as new Multi-Touch gestures, system-wide support for full screen apps, and Mission Control for instantly accessing everything running on your Mac."

There is a valid reason behind why Safari is growing in browser market-share, apart from the fact that iPhone carries it: it is arguably the fastest browser there is. The fourth beta version that surfaced earlier this week went a few notches ahead of Firefox (Minefield) 3.2a1 and Google Chrome in a review conducted by CNet, to take the top-sport for the fastest web-browser. Internet Explorer (IE) versions 7 and 8, Opera 9.6, Firefox 3, Chrome, Firefox(Minefield) 3.1 Alpha 1 and Safari 4 were put through JavaScript tests using the SunSpider suite. The PC was equipped with a Core 2 Duo processor running at 2.10 GHz. Safari 4 beta gave IE 7 a sound thrashing at the test, emerging 42 times faster. The performance difference between the two were so vast that the reviewers had to prepare a seperate graph without IE 7 so there could be more resolution in the charts showing the differences between the rest of the contendors. Then again, one must take into account the fact that Chrome and Firefox (Minefield) 3.2 weren't all that behind Safari 4 beta, only a few notches. The scores are denoted by render time in terms of milliseconds. Lesser the better. The scores stand at:
