Status Between 3ANC TWS Earphones Review

Pairing and Customization

Pairing the Status Between 3ANC is simple given they turn on in pairing mode the first time you open the case and take them out. Indeed, the case is specifically designed to push the physical buttons down and turn off the IEMs when stored, meaning they simply turn on and go into pairing mode when removed. I had no problem getting my phone/laptop to detect the earphones and multi-point connectivity allowed for two clients to be simultaneously paired with the earphones—only one connection can be active at any given time. While things have been going good so far, this is where I will complain to Status about the relatively poor codec support despite the marketing claiming the use of high grade components. We only have SBC and AAC codec support here with the latter prioritized even on Android. Clearly Status is thinking of iPhone users as their customer base here. Unfortunately this does put a damper for higher bit-rate playback on Android in a world where LDAC and LHDC codec support is increasingly supported on other TWS earphones.

The Status Between 3ANC is supported by a first-party mobile app of the same name available for both Android and iOS. The app, as with the physical product itself, is relatively new so we don't have a lot of reviews on Android. The iOS users on the other hand seem to have misread what the app is for since they seem to be complaining it does not work with other Status products despite the app clearly stating and being named for the Between 3ANC only. For what it's worth, I had no issues with the app and it worked without any bugs or stability concerns. The first thing I did was check for any firmware updates and there wasn't one available given the recent release of the product. The home page shows the IEMs in the onyx color scheme—not a big deal—and separate battery levels for the two sides in 1% increments. You can also switch between ANC and ambient mode here in addition to selecting one of three available sound modes. Status Signature and Audiophile are new to the Between 3 ANC and you can also try the original Status Between Pro tuning if you want to see the changes made with the newer Between 3ANC. I also appreciated an 8-band equalizer integrated in the app allowing you to create and save custom EQ profiles too. It's a clean and featured app that is also easy to use—no complaints here outside of my usual request to have proper parametric EQ support for all such apps. I suppose being able to turn on/off the voice prompts would not be a bad idea either if Status is taking feedback, but really I would much rather see better codec support first.

For those who don't want to use the app, Status does have a good deal of pre-programmed controls on the Between 3ANC. The physical button allows you to toggle between ANC and ambient mode, pull up the smart assistant, and even have the voice prompt give you the current battery level which is quite handy. On rare occasions I did have my triple taps being detected as double taps but not consistently to where it could be user error rather than that of the earphones. Interestingly, the touch controls worked flawlessly so this is probably the only time I have had a physical button perform worse. Here you get volume and media playback control as well as answering/rejecting incoming phone calls. Note there is no setting to change the sound mode meaning, at least for now, you will need the app to do so. Any EQ/sound/operating mode changes made in the app are saved on the earphones.
