Frogware's "The Sinking City 2" Has Evolved into a Full-Blown Horror Game

The characters in a Lovecraft story are susceptible to… mutation. Minds and bodies are forever altered by exposure to the horrors hiding in the darker corners of the world. It's perhaps no surprise, then, that The Sinking City 2—which just got a world premiere in the latest Xbox Partner Preview broadcast—has undergone its own unexpected change. Where the first game was a detective adventure, with horror bubbling up from its flooded world, its sequel has taken on a darker, more aggressive form. The Sinking City 2 is a true horror game now, with more emphasis on combat, while keeping a Lovecraftian narrative close to its twisted heart.

"The Sinking City is one of our most successful titles, because of our stronger horror genre leanings and the setting," Frogwares Head of Publishing, Sergey Oganesyan tells me. "For us, it was kind of a breakthrough, and we are super excited to work on a full-scale horror game. We have created quite a few detective adventures in the past, so now we're going to mix things up to keep doing what people love from us - meaning story-rich experiences - while still being able to evolve."

Streacom Announces SG10 Fanless Gaming PC Case

The SG10 is an ambitious product designed to push the boundaries of fanless technology and create a gaming case capable of cooling high-performance CPUs and GPUs without the use of fans. This project collaboration between Streacom and Calyos is also aimed at showcasing the application of loop heat pipe technology in PC cooling and represents the first step in creating a viable mainstream high-performance solid-state alternative to water cooling solutions.

The spiritual successor to the SG10 began life as a Kickstarter project launched by Calyos as the NSG S0, and whilst having extensive expertise in cooling, the additional challenges of consumer product manufacturing proved to be a stumbling block. A search ensued to find a partner with suitable experience to get the project back on track, and with experience in both case manufacturing and fanless cooling, Streacom was the natural fit. As can be understood just by glancing at the image, the SG10 represents a complete redesign of the NSG S0. Not a single asset or component was carried over from the original case. This includes the Evaporator that pumps the coolant around the loop and the Condenser that radiates the heat, both core components that make this performance possible. Everything has been entirely re-engineered and improved far beyond the original specification and performance.

Streacom and CALYOS Tease the Unfashionably Late and Beleaguered SG10 for Computex 2023

Streacom have announced that they'll be hosting a booth at Computex with CALYOS, where they'll be showing the fruits of their labors on the long awaited SG10 passive-cooled chassis. If you're unfamiliar with the story of the SG10: back in late 2016 CALYOS made waves in the tech sphere with a novel new passively cooled ATX chassis prototype called the NSG S0. Their passive design relied on phase-change evaporator blocks and 'Loop Heat Pipe' runs out to condenser-finstack cooling zones that consumed the entire rear and front panels of the chassis to cool the GPU and CPU. The total thermal dissipation of this design was estimated at the time to allow for up to 600 W of heat, with final numbers to be determined after the design had been finalized. CALYOS opened a Kickstarter for the NSG S0 in early 2017 which attracted 461 backers and a quarter million Euro to fund the project goal of €150K. Many of the top contributors were told they would be receiving the finished NSG S0 by the end of 2017. A promise that fell immediately flat as the chassis never materialized for backers of the project. Dozens of project updates, excuses, executive changeovers, private funding campaigns, and empty promises finally led to Streacom being involved as the experienced party to redesign and deliver a product on the initial NSG S0 premise.

Emerge Launches its First Product to Bring Physical Touch to the Metaverse

Emerge, a social virtual connection company, today announced the launch of the Emerge Home system: the first product to enable immersive 'bare-hands' tactile experiences in the Metaverse. A recent study from National Research Group, uncovering consumer views of the Metaverse found that the majority are excited about the Metaverse, but 78% of consumers say "when interacting with people virtually, I miss the ability to physically touch and interact with them." Online, we miss non-verbal cues, sensory experiences, and ways of feeling things together. As virtual worlds become the epicenter of shared social experiences, they still lack a key pillar of our human experience - the ability to use our bare hands to feel, interact, and physically connect with those who matter most to us, our "inner circles".

The Emerge Home system consists of three components: the Emerge Wave-1 device, the Emerge Home social virtual experience, and the Emerge Home mobile app. The Emerge Wave-1 is a new tabletop device that invites your bare hands to be your controllers. Around the same footprint as a 13" laptop, it emits sculpted ultrasonic waves that allow users to feel and interact via touch in the virtual world. Through the use of Emerge's patented technology, the Emerge Wave-1 creates a mid-air field of interaction up to three feet above the device and 120 degrees around it.

The B600's VoiceRadar technology combined with dynamic beamforming and an A.I. algorithm allows users to achieve full-duplex, clear calls in noisy environments, while the 2K capable video camera offers auto-focus, FOV adjustment, and image enhancement while also utilizing the camera's MagicSight technology for automated lighting adjustment including brightness and color temperature.

Introducing Epomaker Lite - an Innovative Shallow Gasket Mount Mechanical Keyboard

Epomaker announces the Epomaker Lite, a 60% form factor wireless mechanical keyboard whose patented Shallow Gasket-Mount design makes it unique from any other traditional gasket-mount keyboard on the current market. In addition to the new design, the Epomaker Lite also features many attractive features such as hot swappable switches, wired and wireless dual connectivity, and multi-device simultaneous connection.

What's a Gasket-Mount Structure?
The core concept of a gasket-mount design is to provide a soft typing feeling and raindrop-like typing sounds by avoiding direct contact between the keyboard plate and the other keyboard components. Instead of using screws to support the inner components, the traditional gasket structure uses small pieces of rubber/silicone gaskets on the edges inside the keyboard, making the gaskets be the main contact points between the inner bottom of the case, the PCB, and the top plate. Nonetheless, the conventional gasket structures only have the gaskets padding on the edges of the keyboard, leaving the center empty. This can cause a lack of support in the main typing area of the keyboard, resulting in an inconsistent sound and typing feel.

Linsoul Introduces the Peacock Flight: Hand-Crafted Professional True Wireless Stereo (TWS) Earphones

Linsoul Audio has been striving to bring the acoustic performance of professional in-ear monitors to the public. After two years of putting passion for perfection to the test and engineering, Linsoul has worked in conjunction with Peacock Audio to introduce the Peacock Flight, which is a superior hand-crafted set of true wireless earphones. Each Peacock Flight unit is handcrafted from start to finish, from the shell molding process to the wiring of the drivers. This is a bespoke design, which makes the earphones be a true one-of-a-kind artwork. The engineering and tuning process is meticulously conducted, and strict testing of each driver component ensures the greatest precision and quality control.

Acoustic performance always comes first on priorities for earphones. Equipped with a Qualcomm aptX HD-compatible chipset, the Peacock Flight supports aptX codecs, which ensures crystal clear sound production with extremely low latency. What's more, the Qualcomm QCC3040 Bluetooth chipset brings a stable connection to achieve the most coherent connection and listening experience. On top of that, the Peacock Flight is also equipped with Qualcomm's latest Clear Voice Capture (CVC) 8.0, which is a noise reduction algorithm that effectively filters out background noise to reduce up to 30 dB of unwanted ambient sound during phone calls. By accurately calculating the position of the caller in relation to environmental sounds, CVC 8.0 allows a pure sound transmission for cleaner and more audible calls.

HalfDive, World's First Bed-Mounted-Display VR Headset

VR and AR headsets might not have been quite the success they were expected to be, mainly due to cost, but now, a Japanese company has developed what has to be one of the weirdest VR headsets to date, one that's meant to be used in bed.

The HalfDive VR headset, or BMD (Bed-Mounted-Display) from Diver-X is trying to implement a range of new features that have never been seen before in a VR headset, such as "wind feedback. This is simply done by a pair of fans built into the headset that outside of adding a touch of wind in your face effect, can apparently also be used for cooling down the user.

Other more normal features include a 3D audio system that consists of four speakers placed around the head, a force feedback system based on what might best be described as friction bands, vibration feedback via an "audio exciter" and foot controllers in addition to regular hand controllers.

Bizarre/Interesting Tech on Crowdfunding Platforms: CharaChorder Lite Multistroke Keyboard

Hey remember this thing from CES last year? I left my meeting with CharaChorder quite impressed by also with a lot of questions, and wanting answers that I am still curious about. Fast forward an year and some change, and it appears that the CharaChorder is actually up for sale somewhat? The render there is different looking from the original retail renders, and there is a 2-month lead time as well, but this has not stopped the company from putting up a more relatable keyboard form factor on Kickstarter.

Dubbed the CharaChorder Lite, it is a 60% keyboard that manages to squeeze in arrow keys in there too. But the most interesting thing here is no doubt the adoption of the company's patented "chorded entry" system that allows for chords and phrases to be typed in simultaneously, and not one one character at a time. I will reserve judgment on how easy it is to adapt to this system until I test a unit in person if possible, however the company is promising training modules for owners to help reduce the entry barrier. The CharaChorder Lite has already met its funding goals on Kickstarter, and comes available at a much more attainable price too compared to the original CharaChorder.

Bizarre/Interesting Tech on Crowdfunding Platforms: Massive BLUETTI 5100 Wh UPS!

I'll admit that I came across this almost immediately after the DUEX dual-screen laptop monitors yesterday, but had to do a double take after glancing at this thing which took a day! Having just moved across multiple oceans, yours truly was in the mood for a UPS for the review test setup and this got my interest in more ways than one. BLUETTI had launched a 2000 Wh energy storage device last summer, which was pretty good timing for all the work-at-home and energy shortage experiences shortly across the globe, and the company clearly saw a need to go even bigger. This time, they have up to a 5100 Wh "portable" UPS/battery that can be charged by AC mains or even solar power.

The portability comes in the form of a fairly compact and energy-dense device on wheels, with the intention being to roll this over to wherever you want. The increased energy density relative to a typical UPS is indeed with a Lithium-ion battery, but one that uses LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) chemistry instead. LFP chemistry, for those interested, is relatively new to the battery market owing to challenges until recently in increasing the electrical conductivity, but offers advantages over most other options in not using nickel or cobalt, thus making it more eco-friendly, safer, and less costly, while retaining increased charge/discharge cycles at a usable efficiency. Indeed, the BLUETTI EP500 Pro claims 6000 cycles of use at retaining ~70-80% capacity at this point, which alone means you can run a small house for 15+ years should you find the means to charge it consistently too. The company is providing the means to hook it up to solar charging kits, as well as a fusion panel for 240 V operation from the 120 V units to run high-power machinery. Yes, it's complete overkill for my needs and yours, and at $2799+ on Kickstarter for the SKUs it is priced out for many DIYers too, but it's still interesting tech from a materials and engineering perspective that perhaps may interest some home owners here. Apparently others agreed with this already, seeing as how it met its goals within 24 hours and has a little under 2 months left to go to break some crowdfunding records. Hit the link in the source for more info if you are interested!

Bizarre/Interesting Tech on Crowdfunding Platforms: DUEX Portable Dual-screen Laptop Monitors

Continuing this series that began with the MSI gaming foot pedals, I came across Duex on Kickstarter today. Remember Razer's Project Valerie? It was the triple screen laptop concept shown off at CES 2017, but nothing came out of it from the company to this date. Duex, or rather Mobile Pixels Inc., first made the second-screen DUO that shipped in 2019, and then the triple screen TRIO that shipped last year and looks very bizarre and interesting to fit this series perfectly in my opinion. The company decided that their second-screen experience can be improved further, and have taken to crowdfunding again with two new models called the DUEX Lite and DUEX Plus,

The DUEX Lite is a 12.5" screen and the DUEX Plus a 13.3" model that also offers a few other features additional USB ports, an aluminium alloy frame, auto aspect ratio rotation, as well as increased compatibility with other mobile devices beyond laptops on an x86 platform. The screens are held in place on a magnetic base which allows them to be pushed back into the back of the laptop to make for a thick sandwich, as well as extended in either direction and pivoted to allow for a compact dual-screen experience on the go. The DUEX Lite has an advertised MSRP of ~$315 (their own numbers are off by $5 depending on the early bird tiers) and the DUEX Plus at ~$345, and currently can be had for much lower on Kickstarter as expected. Do keep in mind that the TRIO backers seem to have mostly received the package to their satisfaction, although some are still waiting and others have had issues. So if this interests you, please do some more reading on all this before backing the project, which ends in a little under a month from now.
