Dont think its worth it for those on Sandy-Bridge systems. Unless they like spending money but why spend it on a mainstream chip and not the Enthusiast socket and chip. For those building a new system Ivy-Bridge and --7 boards look to be a no brainer choice.
Ivy-Bridge benefits over Sandy-Bridge
-Runs cooler at same hz
-Better memory scaling
-Lower power consumption
-And its faster
-PCI-E 3.0
If you get the Z77 they have benefits too.
-PCI-E 3.0 (need Ivy-Bridge CPU to activate)
-Internal USB 3.0 support (no more re-routing)
-More fan inputs and control customizations
-Improved power phases
For those overclocking. You can get 4.4ghz on stock cooler wouldnt recomend it for 24/7 the stock fan is smaller and thinner. I'll be getting a ALC soon.
Many are running 4.5ghz 2 1.2v Prime95 stable (yes the new P95x64 AVX v.27.6) with high end air or self contained h80-h100's.
Anything higher you'll need heavier duty liquid cooling for sustained 4.6ghz-4.7ghz.
Another slick thing that makes z77 seem 'faster" too is that you can run ddr3 2400-2800 off the bat!
And it includes a license for virtu mvp.
