Next-generation Microsoft Surface Laptop Could be Packing AMD's 16-thread R7 4800U CPU

A 3D mark entry uncovered by database spelunker Tum_Apisak, since shared on Twitter, points towards Microsoft incorporating AMD's latest and greatest mobility-geared CPU in one of their upcoming product refreshes. The database entry register an unknown Microsoft device carrying ÃMD's Ryzen 7 4800U CPU. All specs are correct for this CPU - GPU cores, GPU clock, as well as CPU base and boost clocks.

While we can't know for sure this is Microsoft's next iteration of the Surface Laptop, assuming it is just an educated guess. Microsoft's current-gen Surface Laptop 3 shipped in a special, AMD-inside edition in the form of the "Microsoft Surface Edition" Ryzen 5 3580U - and if Microsoft included an AMD Zen+ CPU manufactured in a 12 nm fabrication process inside their Surface Laptop, we would find it very hard to justify not including the much-improved Ryzen 7 4800U - the chip is better in any conceivable way compared to its last-gen counterpart. This is a sure way of improving overall performance and battery life of their Surface Laptops compared to what the competition has currently available.

It's almost logical to put the best processor in Microsoft's Surface. I think Microsoft would also want this.

Since they've used AMD before it's no surprise. Quite a step up from 3780U.

It should not only be an option in Surface laptop, but the Surface Pro as well. There’s no reason not to at this point, other than the usual engineering costs. Intel can’t bring an 8C/16T CPU to Surface Pro that’s as good as Ryzen right now, so MS is missing a premium niche.

Especially since MSFT is holding out against TB3, probably the only real defining feature of Ice Lake vs AMD chips. So no excuse about "compatilibty" there, since MSFT doesn't use it.

I was actually going to buy the 15" but found out the 4800H(S) exist and thus started the waiting game.

Im using the current SL3 with intel and I cannot wait for this.

Definitely going to go platinum metal though, the black aluminum is a fingerprint nightmare.

Almost being the key word, pretty sure Intel's doing everything in their power to prevent it, not in the least because Surface is also a halo product much like the Macs or Macbooks :shadedshu:

The problem is the laptop market is even less than "almost logical" intel is still king in spite of being worse at everything.

The 4800HS is a different beast, but for a tablet I would consider the 4800U a better processor, plenty of performance without eating the battery too fast.

This.
I think they tested the waters with their laptop, and may include the 5XXXU (Zen3) parts in their Pro lineup. Then, I might update my 7yo Surface Pro 2.

I've still yet to see a proper 4800U + LPDDR4X laptop review, nor can I order one anywhere.

Six weeks ago the delay was blamed on COVID, but another six weeks have passed and there are still no 4800U models in sight, yet lots of other COVID-delayed models from AMD, Intel, and major laptop vendors appear to be on the market and available to buy now....

Is everything okay with the 4800U or is there some underlying issue that means it's completely absent from the market despite the 4800HS and 4500/4600/4700U being readily available now?
