NVIDIA CEO Comments on RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 Supply Shortages

Shortages in supply of GeForce RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 graphics cards could persist until 2021, according to NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang, responding to a question in a Q&A session of the GTC 2020 (Fall) conference. "The 3080 and 3090 have a demand issue, not a supply issue," said Huang. "The demand issue is that it is much much greater than we expected—and we expected really a lot," he added.

Jen-Hsun predicts that the Holiday 2020 shopping season will only compound availability woes. "I believe that demand will outstrip all of our supply through the year. Remember, we're also going into the double-whammy. The double-whammy is the holiday season. Even before the holiday season, we were doing incredibly well, and then you add on top of it the "Ampere factor," and then you add on top of that the "Ampere holiday factor," and we're going to have a really really big Q4 season." He likened the demand of the RTX 3080 to that of the Intel Pentium in the mid-1990s. "Retailers will tell you they haven't seen a phenomenon like this in over a decade of computing. It hearkens back to the old days of Windows 95 and Pentium when people were just out of their minds to buy this stuff. So this is a phenomenon like we've not seen in a long time, and we just weren't prepared for it."

I get how it can shape an experience, but, holding on to it for a decade when you don't even use the technology today because it's dead (for all intents and purposes) is another thing. You're of course entitled to feel that way... as am I to think that's a bit fickle. I shouldn't be surprised as many seem to do that, as illogical as it seems to me. :)

You are a reviewer you have a jaded point of view as you have seen the good and the bad from specific brands without it impacting on your wallet (as much). It would explain your disdain for Multi GPU. As bad as it is right now I am not in anyway sad that I had a killer 7950 ($200 for a reference 7950) crossfire setup that was replaced with a Vega 64 crossfire setup (I actually regret selling one of my cards) now I have a 5700 and knowing me I probably will get another 5700 for my Threadripper build as Big Navi whatever will be going into my 1440P Gaming PC.

EarthDogPeople bench competitively with many different drivers as some perform better than others in certain games or benchmarks. So for example, 420.xy does well in 3DMK, but 420.xz may do better in Superposition. etc..... that doesn't mean performance was nuked necessarily.
If you're into it, sure... like masochism. :p

There's two driver's ATM in consumer land , that's a fair point usually, now less so.
But you're point goes two ways , yes they optimise performance with driver's , what's to stop them limiting flat out performance now day one release benches are done.
While maintaining the same effective in game performance due to driver optimization.
Kinda looks like that's exactly what just happened to me.

So since I happen to review hardware, I don't buy any other products or services to experience the same thing? :p

Let me tell you a story about my Nissan Sentra and the 10 PAGE MS WORD DOCUMENT I had going trying to fight some bullshit (clutch slipped at 5K miles, they could never reproduce the issue... wouldn't fix it... until...........after the warranty calling it a 'wear part'). I got royally FUCKED by Nissan on this car. I'll still buy a Nissan. :)

How do you respond to such a biased thought with all the videos and sites that covered it before showing it wasn't true (neutering old cards).

I belong at the fun club of Toyota, my father was a cars freelancer electrician an he loved their quality and design, I am hart and soul motorcycle driver all my life, I assume no one is perfect :)

They are youth swimming in to fear, with out NVIDIA this mailing boxes to them, they do not exist.
But been a blogger with character made of steel, this is neither profitable.
In comparison with other markets and products, computer industry this always include a portion of illusion at their marketing.

kapone32I do not buy Nvidia cards and that is because I can't trust them not to gimp or lessen my GPU performance without my permission on a product that I already own
You DO know actually that this has been tested and disproved multiple times, don’t you?

Jensen Huang is a disgrace. What a low opinion he has of his customers.

Ampere lies and deception is the worst we've ever seen from Nvidia. How far will they push this whole assault on their loyal and gullible fans?

What next, an 8GB 8K card? A 500W Ampere Titan?

Why do you bring up old cards, I'm talking about 3xxx series release only, is it tangent time.

As I and you said they optimise performance with driver's!?.

Don't be bringing bias into the conversation or we're done with it, your the one in here and many other thread on defence duty ATM.

Ok...let's not call it bias...let me rephrase...

How do you respond to such a thought when there has only been two drivers? None of which have slowed this card down at all according to tests.

Which doesn't answer my first point.

A,They optimise driver's to up performance.

B,And they chilled out max boost for stability with release two.

Did point A cover the ass of point B.

That's what I asked.

Because people going for OC records have been going with driver A which makes me wonder.

You will be accused for hot temper. :)
Yes there is a glitch at technology level, electronics design.
Yes they should be more truthful or sincere, but behind any CEO there is an image maker advising him of what to say.
The goal this is minimizing negative impact as much as possible.
Anything else this will be sorted at a court house (disputes of NVIDIA with their partners, ASUS , MSI and others).

At the price of RTX3090 you can buy a home in Pakistan.
Yes but nobody wants to live in a home that gets bombed out of existence every few months

1500 us dollars for a small hut in Pakistan, said hut gets blown up 3 times a year on average over 30 years 1500 x3 x 30 thats a 135 grand you can buy a pretty banging house in a more stable nation for that and not need to worrie about your stuff going up with the hut

sounds pretty silly once you do the math

This period of time this is going to be a game changer, there is no room for laughs, even major European states they are drawn by their loans.
I am just an electrician but I would expect an CEO him to be better informed of financial data.
If NVIDIA this calculates north Europe as their only customers base, this it might be true for the next three months.
Crisis this will expand in entire Europe for as long the banking system this does not erases European states loans (which them have been miscalculated and illegally inflated over the years).

My golden advice : Do not used Credit cards about buying PC hardware.
If you are determined to get something, use only cash.

Vya DomusWithout actual numbers, this is pure hogwash. They just wanted to get these out before AMD, that's all.
Reminds me of the quote from MS that said "more people are switching from Mac to Surface than ever before." It sounds really great at first, but MS never provided a baseline or any numbers either. For all we knew, the current year was 10 switchers, and previous year was 9!

EarthDogWhy is that 'his' responsibility?
He could set up regional pricing for hardware with geo-blocking and a moratorium on resale for 12 months to prevent scalpers and the usual scammers.

He could, but I ask again... why is this 'his' responsibility? Why would that be AMD's responsibility (who also wouldn't do such a thing)? It isn't their responsibility.

Scalpers and scammers things are all made by Nvidia. They made up this thing to show that there is high-demand so there is an excuse for raising the prices.
Why these scammers and scalpers aren't doing anything with Nvidia's RTX 2xxx cards? Because Nvidia simply made up the whole thing.
Governments national and international organizations and police must investigateall these things.

İt is Nvidia's right to price their products at what ever price they want BUT You just can't put your products on eBay with double the price and then say their is demand issue. Or claim you have released a product but actually you haven't. You just send the to reviewers. This is definitely ILLEGAL.
