Only 244 copies of Genuine Windows Vista sold in China

Microsoft spent millions of dollars advertising its next generation OS 'Windows Vista' in China, in fact the IT juggernaut threw up the biggest Vista Ad on the 421 meter high Jin Mao tower in Shanghai China. However after 2 weeks (Jan 19 to Feb 2) from launch Microsoft managed to sell a mere 244 copies of Windows Vista. Software piracy is rampant in the middle kingdom and a pirated version of Vista sells for a mere $1 on the streets.

The key word here is "genuine". There is 120 000 000 "copies" of Vista being sold for 7CNY (about $1USD)...

Well, considering the price it is no wonder piracy thrives over there.

I actually think Microsoft deserves it. Most computer software only has a 1-2 year life and then they are found in the bargin bin or released as a whole new version. And the most you have to pay for a game is $50. Windows XP has been around forever... and the price has always been the same... you never find it in the bargin bin. I think they could afford to drop the price significantly and still make plenty of profit, considering the long shelf life they can expect.

Honestly, they may have to go well below $50 if they want to sell it in places like China.

I'm a genuine user, but since it really concerns me that these pirated versions work or not...I tested many cr**ks and versions of vista available on the net...
it's sad but, m$ failed on this part again... almost every windows has been cracked LOL.
Most pirated version of vista that ppl are using are mainly from the net :p anyways...Vista should be sold! at anycost, even free

If M$ were truly serious about selling their software or OS's to China, they should create a cut down version only for China, and sell at a substantially reduced price. The majority of people in China are way below the poverty line, they cannot simply afford to pay, and those that can, are smart enough to know that if they can get it for $1USD, why the hell would they pay >$250USD for the same software????? Would they lose sleep over buying pirated software? I think not.

Unfortunately, Piracy usually results in higher prices, which means when I get Crysis and switch to Vista, I'll probably have to pay more! :shadedshu

I read an article about the China situation where one seller didn't even know where to get a legit one, as the writer asked to buy one. Nearest that he thought could be in some bigger city 200km away (or something like that).

If it was $50, you'd be crying that it should be $20 and so on and so forth. Microsoft does not "deserve" to be pirated. They make a product that 99% of the planet has chosen to use. Contrary to your delusions, no one is being forced to use it. This is business, and business revolves around making money. Get over it.

i beleive in cheaper price = more sales than high price = less sales

then can stille make the same profit or even more by lowering price and more people buying

Hehe, Chinese rule - 1 $ per copy...
Damn, it's a bit more expensive here - about 2-3 $ for any DVD you want, no matter software or game! :-P

Right, but common sense/basics of economics states that there is a 'middleground' price where people are still not going to buy it because of the cheaper price. Diminishing returns and what not...plus if MS spent 5 years developing this new software, spent billions on engineers, billions on advertising, inflation...you'd think they'd increase the price again. Besides, as prices for the highest-end computers go up as well as newest software then why not just get a console :)

Hell right now with the 120 day activation and if you ran Ghost on day one you never would have to buy a copy without that much trouble.

i lived in Kazakstan(central Asia), i had no choice but to buy pirated CD's. There is NO genuine software at all. you can go in to a pretty expensive store and all you will find is pirates selling their stuff :)
and even if there was genuine CD's, no one would be able to buy them. People there earn $100/month, so even pirated CD's that cost ~$1 kinda expensive too. (and they are made out of VERY cheap plastic, many CD's broke in my CD-ROM into pieces.

I think they deserve to have vista pirated.. for a little while at least.. seems fair to me seeing as i bought a lemon of a software that is such crap i would choose rather to wipe with it than to use it.. as far as im concerned thats carma catching up to them for raping consumers for a garbage product that has more bugs than a rain forest and you all know it's true..lol..

Vista sux total butt.. I won't even use it for like another 6 months i bet.. it's just sitting in the junk box, waiting to become useful.. but as it is, im glad they got smacked for overpricing for one and for putting out garbage for two.. they made us all kinds of promises about how great vista would be.. and it still sux.. serves em right.. but once they fix it i hope the piracy stops lol.. everyone needs to make money.. Not like Bill gates "needs" it lol.. but no one works for free.

I just cant stress enough how crappy it is they let out such a horrible sub standard product and said how perfect it was the whole time. They straight up lied and used consumers to buy it and fix the problems as they went.. i don't think vista will ever be what it was supposed to be now.. which to me just screams poetic justice.. lol funny thing is once they install vista they'll realise the dollar they spent was a rip off..lol.. id rather run ME... at least it works..lol.. all i saw with vista were errors with non compatibility with software all over the place. we use pinnacle for video editing, yea that barely works. it stalls out every single day multiple times.. games still have issues.. and overclocking with it is a constant headache.
im much happier using xp..

I love how everyone says "well Bill Gates doesn't need any more money". As if there aren't armies of software engineers putting food on the table for their families. Finally, Gates has done more for humanitarian projects, than all of you could possibly conceive combined. If you don't like the software DO NOT BUY IT. The easiest way to tell a company they are doing something wrong, is by not opening your wallets to them. GET IT?

I so agree damulta..lol 100% :toast: i will not use vista until it actually works.. and even then i wont be suprised if i revert to xp.. the only thing vista offers me so far is DX10.. no games for dx10 lol.. have you seen all the junk vista installs on your system? itt's insane.. it's like they sold your ass to companies. I felt like i ran into the middle of a telemarketing convention when i opened vista.. pop ups even before you go online?!! lol wtf.. they try to sell you thing every single day in pop ups.. and it's not the web.. it's vista doing it.. it's vista pulling up "hey you should upgrade" boxes every single day over and over and it's pathetic.. i bought software and i ended up becoming an advertisement biotch for microsoft. seriously vista really bugs me alot.. shows how little concern they have for customers privacy and peace of mind..
Bill gates sold us software then used us as advertisement space like a dam billboard.. sorry, it really urkse me i spent good money on this..
best way i can say it is this... imagine you call every telemarketing company that has ever bugged the hell out of you.. then you pay them hunderds of dollars to bother you everyday.. who would be so stupid? well apparently we are.. because we bought the software.. thats a direct insult as far as im concerned.. i'd like to make Bill gates eat this cd. from the backside.. :nutkick:

and for those of u who think "if you dont like it dont buy it" is a real answer..
please stop saying plainly senseless things..lol.. how do you know what a software does .. unless you use it? common sense.. and had we known what we were getting into.. we wouldn't of bought it.. chew on that for a while..

the software made promises it plainly did not deliver in so many ways i lost count.. it's not even friggin compatible with most software people like to use.. maybe those "engineers" as you so call them need to back to school and learn how to build things that work.. and those "engineers" (who make things that suck) could give 2 chits about our money so believe i could care less about theirs.. i use this for wedding video editing so i know what it does.. it does alot of.. uhm.. sucking.. yep, thats about it.. a whole bunch of sucking.. GET IT?
