Quake Wars will have in-game ads

Neil Postlethwaite, Managing Director for Splash Damage, came onto the ET:QW official community site yesterday to make the announcement. In order to bring not just basic bug patches but continuous refinements and improvements to what the company hopes will be a long-standing multiplayer experience, the developer has gone the route of In-game advertising.

"For the last four years, we've put all of our effort into making Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars. So, we're not planning to ship this game and walk away. We want to keep supporting ETQW in as many ways as possible. We'll be maintaining the persistent stats servers and the community site, and continuing to support ETQW with updates and improvements," Neil said in his post.

In his comments, he also made sure to cover privacy concerns regarding the advertising. "The company providing the ad system does not and will not store any personal information or data that otherwise can be used to identify you. All they track is if and how long you look at the advertisements." Whether that will be enough to quell the privacy critics or not has yet to be seen, but at least the comments so far have been largely positive.

I don't have any real problem with in-game ads as long as the advertisement fits the environment that it is in.

For example, a Pepsi billboard in the forests in Oblivion would kill the immersion.

In a city environment you would expect to see billboards or other ads, why not make them for real products ?

Just my 2 cents.

Perhaps after many years games will be free and game companies will be paid by ads ;)

Clever idea, I don't see any problem with that.
You won't lose money/time/game experience/privacy with that.
They will earn more money (both companies), and lose less with pirate products, so you'll, theoretically, have more game support, more updates.
What's the problem with that ?
Some people just think others should work for free... I don't... even though I'm not the best person to say that....... if you know what I mean.....

I dont have a problem with it, as long as they do it within the context of the ad, as was mentioned. I also dont want to have to pay extra for these damn ads. If anything, the games should costs a good $20USD less.

I would infact enjoy it if I am playing cs_office or whatever in CS:S and there is a vending machine w/ Pepsi or whatever, I think its kinda cool.

Makes city maps look more "real".

And should make games cheaper aswell!

From what I've heard from beta players, it has nothing on BF2142. Fast, deathmatchy, weird vehicles and beta map is too small. Was hoping to move from BF2142 to this, but would seem it's a no go for me. Still have to try the beta first.

if it is for the purpose of keeping the game servers for these games free then i personally have no problem with them, one problem i would have is if there were constant patch updates just to update in game adverts and such.

At least the money is going to be used for free expansions, content, support, and community stats and what not....compared to bf2142, where the players got nothing.

I wont...where talking about ID software here, the gaming gurus. Majority of games out there uses their engines.

Try Wolfenstein ET (free), it is the spiritual predecessor of ETQW, it will almost be 1:1 with QW but without vehicles.

BF2142 has 2-3 billboards in every map so i dont think thats enough for the bf2142 players to get something out of it ... However EA Does have about 40 servers running for that game....
