WCCFtech, LOL... Interesting article.

I do believe that it will be higher... $999 at most.

7950 was like 10% slower than a 7970 and priced at $449 MSRP. How is that not high end, one card down??? Is the 1080 not high-end compared to the 1080ti??? I don't get that logic.

More like 15% post catalyst 12.11.

Also, 7950 was nowhere near $299 at launch. We're talking "high end cards for $299".

1080 were high end, back before 1080 ti launched. I don't consider it high end now. Do you?

Clearly, Yes!!! A 1080 is high-end. How is it NOT is my question? A 1080 can pound through 2560x1440 and some 4K (no AA). How is that performance NOT high-end? I don't follow the logic thought process.

High-end does NOT equal flagship!!!

HIgh end for $299? I remember getting a 8800GTX for $700 shipped.
I remember also buying almost as soon as released for near that.

Really, high end prices have not gone up much over the years (other than the current mining markup). Factor in inflation, and that 2006 8800GTX was probably more expensive than 1080 today.

Ehh yes. Otherwise Riva TNT would still be considered high end.

7950 was decent but not high end. 7970 was the hig end, and launched at $549

We're talking flagships here, you can still get a cutdown chip for $300ish that perform "well", does not make it a flagship.

GTX 970 was $329

Don't confuse top entuisiast cards with top consumer ones please.

The original reply you quoted mentions high end, that implies the high-end segment products and not a specific flagship e-peen card.

And i mentioned "high-end entry segment", not flagship. The discrepancy between the 7950 and the mid-range segment at that time (7850/70) was not just less shaders but also half the ROP units (16), both 7950 and the flagship 7970 had 32 ROPs. By your logic, what's not a high end segment/range card? The price and performance of a GTX 1080 (or recent 1070ti) is a mid range product for you?

I've got one of those and a couple of Ultras, all bought years later for a fraction of the price, with one GTX and one Ultra being second hand - and they were still performers. They're for my graphics card collection.

One of the Ultras is a BFG model I got from eBay for £100, brand new in a sealed box with a BFG t-shirt in there. This is long after BFG went under.

Epic.

I like others here have a collection of "High end Cards "
They have been Bought over many Years
and for their Time they were Considered High end
Now for the Average user TODAY they would say " those Cards are Crap and only suitable for the Scrap Bin
While an Enthusast looking for a card for a RETRO BUILD will be looking for the HIGH END CARD for the Period.

High-end does NOT equal flagship!!!

1080 is a mobile chip, not a power hungry, high end chip for the desktop.

980 was the same while the 980ti was a real high end desktop part.

don't let nvidias marketing team mind fuck you into thinking high price = high end part.

titan is the flagship.

Unlike the Riva TNT, the GTX 1080 is the in same gen as the 1080ti. And following your reasoning the 1080TI isn't even high end anymore since the Titan V is faster in gaming.

People on here are delusional if they think 1080s are not high end.

It used to be:

HIGH END
GTX 980 Ti
GTX 980

Upper Mid:
GTX 970

Mid:
GTX 960

Upper Low:
GTX 950

Low End:
<GTX 950

Now people think that

High End:
Titan Xp, Titan V
GTX 1080Ti

Mid:
GTX 1080
GTX 1070Ti

Low:
GTX 1070

Garbage:
GTX 1060 6GB

Let's Not Even Talk About:
GTX 1060 3GB
GTX 1050Ti
GTX 1050
<GTX 1050

titan is the flagship.

Are you drunk, trolling, or serious? Either way, it makes no sense. The only reason Nvidia is ahead of the game right now is exactly because they can provide 1080's performance level at a 180w TDP budget. And competitors who cannot get that efficient release a Vega that caps at 300W for similar perf. Yeah, please, give me that mobile part, thanks! Titan is indeed the flagship, and also the nonsensical product in the Geforce line up, with its ever changing position in the market. It fundamentally has NO place in Nvidia's normal product stack, it serves as a 'can do' product, GV100 being the perfect example and proof of that. The full Gx100 die simply represents the 'concept/prototype car' for each gen. It is a product always looking for a market, preferably a new one. When Titan launched, that was the pro user that also did some gaming and wanted both but didn't need Quadro/Tesla. As many mindless idiot gamers bought Titans, and then felt 'ripped off' because a 780 followed suit (lol!) the next couple of Titans lost their compute and went for the raw gaming performance. Now, GV100 is a massive boost in deep learning, again, because the top end of the marketplace is asking for it, and suddenly we won't see much of Volta / Titan V in the gaming space.

Its not high price that makes it a high perf part, its the high perf that does that. And any combination with high efficiency is bonus.

As for GPU prices, thank you @Fluffmeister for a dose of reality. It seems lacking, and its shocking to see some of the comments here, some people have no grasp whatsoever of what they're talking about apparently.

As for the ideas of @las about what should be high end... It is what it is. The SKU within each product stack of each gen determines its position in the stack. NOT the price of that SKU - price is determined by the marketplace. So by that logic, yes, your old Riva TNT still is a high end product, it just doesn't perform like one today. Same goes for RAM, CPU, and even storage.

Nvidia's stack has NOT changed since Kepler. We have Gx106, Gx104, Gx102 which is and always has been: mid range, high end, enthusiast. And entry/budget for all the crappy stuff below that. So I'll make an even stronger statement: GTX 1070 (GP104) is also a high end part. Yes. Really. The budget oriented one - and again - always been like that. GTX 670 was the high end budget version of a 680, and HD7950 was the high end budget part of a 7970, 970 that of the 980, etc.

Another statement then, to wipe all arguments about pricing off the table: consider inflation, and then look at prices again from the chart above. GPUs (MSRP that is) have become progressively cheaper.

BFG was my go to brand. Sad that they went out of business.

I got me a GTX 295 new in a firesale too some time ago. The only thing I was sorry about with that card, is that it's the single board version rather than the more iconic dual board version. The fan grumbles a bit too, but they didn't have another, so I just kept it. I've also got a brand new EVGA 7950 GX2, boxed.

The 560 and 970 aren't even close to high end so I'm quite confused what this quote is about?

560 isn't, but 970 definitely is a high end part. And it was also one of the cheapest ones in the past decade, which is why everyone jumped on it.

No that's mid range the '70' indicator on nvidia has never been high end.

Not sure where you get that idea from. The x70 is usually a mere 10% below the x80 in performance and can almost match it with an OC versus stock. It is also a slightly cut-down version of the full x80 SKU. So its literally the same chip with a small bite taken out, to make it accessible at a much lower price point. Makes absolutely no sense at all to shove that in an entirely different segment.

x60 / x60ti has always been the midrange indicator with x50 as its budget counterpart.
