I am thinking this may clear up the weird ass anomalies!

I couldnt imagine benching or gaming with out manual settings on the fan ...I been using ATI for ever and this for the most part with refrence cooling has been a standard.

I wanted to post this before I reboot. Check out the results I am getting in GPU-Z...

First "ATI Radeon HD 4870x2" field - http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/a4c87/

Second "ATI Radeon HD 4870x2" field - http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/36hwq/

I'm assuming this craziness is because of the problem in "Device Manager." I'm rebooting right now to see if that fixes it.

I'm thinking now it may be a borked bios on the flash ...maybe he should save hios bios and post it so we can have a look see.

After rebooting, I ran into the dreaded "Out of Range" error instead of my Vista login screen. Thinking back, this is exactly what happened the last time I was able to change my refresh rate from 60Hz to 59Hz. It was running the benchmark fine (not giving me the "Out of Range" error) and I was in shock that it was working, then I rebooted and got the error. The only way I was able to get back into Vista normally was to select "Use last known good configuration," but after I got into Vista I was no longer able to select the 59Hz refresh rate and every time I tried to run at 1920x1080 under DX10 the "Out of Range" error was back just like before.

So I am in Safe Mode with networking right now. I am not sure what to do next.

::scratches his head::

Any ideas? I'm pretty sure that using "Use last known good configuartion" option would get me back into Vista in normal mode, but I'm afraid it will lock out my ability to use 59Hz like it did last time.

As a last resort you could reinstall re-format drive and install vista again and see if it fixes it. Just remember to backup important data if you do

Yeah, I realize that. However, I wouldn't say we're at the "last resort" stage at all yet. Heck, I would say that we're making progress considering I actually got it to run 1920x1080 w/ DX10, even if it was at 60Hz and I'm stuck in Safe Mode now wondering what to do next.

:banghead:

Anymore suggestions before I boot up with "Last known good configuration" and hope it doesn't block me from switching between 60Hz and 59Hz refresh rates?

If it is working at 59Hz then how could it be an issue with my Vista installation?

Try booting "enable vga 640x480" mode and work your way from there. Also as a recap of the thread: Can you post your current settings.

Try booting "enable vga 640x480" mode and work your way from there. Also as a recap of the thread: Can you post your current settings.

After I post this thread I will try to boot into "Enable VGA 640x480" mode.

I am currently in Safe Mode with networking. Before that, I was in Vista after having just done a fresh install of Catalyst 9.1. One of the "ATI Radeon 4870X2" entries in "Device Manager" under "Display Adapters" had the yellow circle and exclamation point, the other entry was fine. The BenQ driver my for E2400HD monitor was also showing up as installed under "Monitors" because I forgot to uninstall it before doing the fresh 9.1 install. At this point I was still getting the "Out of Range" error at 1920x1080 under DX10. On a whim, I decided to uninstall the BenQ driver for my monitor and I also checked the "Remove driver completely" box. After removing the driver, I went into CCC and attempted to change my refresh rate from 60Hz to 59Hz. It worked. I quickly tried the Unigine benchmark utility and was amazed that it ran DX10 at 1920x1080 instead of giving me the "Out of Range" error like usual. After that, I left the refresh rate at 59Hz, rebooted, and immediately ran into the "Out of Range" error instead of getting my login screen.

I am going to try to boot into Vista via "Enable VGA 640x480" mode right now. I will be back momentarily.

That didn't work. I was looking through a closet and saw that I do have an old monitor back there but it is VGA only and it certainly won't do any resolution close to 1920x1080.

DRDNA, you still around? I hope so. I feel like I'm kind of getting close. Should I just bite the bullet and use "Last Known Good Configuration"? I'm pretty sure that will let me boot into Vista without Safe Mode, but I'm afraid I won't be able to switch to 59Hz after I do it.

Ok, I'm back in Vista now at 60Hz with the error, the usual setup. I'm basically back where I started.

If I deleted all the drivers for my monitor, how can CCC still tell it is a BenQ E2400HD?

I'm going to call it a night for messing with this and I'll get back on it tomorrow. I do have a laptop that is only about three months old with a Radeon card in it. I'll have to double check to see which card it is. I may be able to connect it to the monitor and attempt running DX10 @ 1920x1080 with it.

What I do not understand is how it was working when it was set to 59Hz? That doesn't make any sense.

After that, if monitor is screwing up, its the monitor. If it's fine. RMA the video card.

My laptop has HDMI which I could use to connect to the monitor, but not DVI. So I won't really be able to replicate the environment will I?
