Nicehash Ad on TPU main site

Everyone, the nicehash ad is gone now and there's nothing showing at the moment.

gpu is not damn luxury lmfao, a ferrari car maybe.
Honestly, as an avid gamer, I’m telling you GPU’s are a luxury item. Every part of a computer that might make it a necessity for most people doesn’t require a discrete GPU. What’s on the CPU is sufficient. Those technical jobs which may require GPU’s don’t usually use consumer gaming GPU’s. Gaming is a luxury activity, as in extra, not necessary to life.

Incorrect, I just saw it when I checked the front page just now.

Hi,
Maybe redesigning that orange back ground out :-)

Incorrect, I just saw it when I checked the front page just now.
I don't see it anymore either. Funny when I first saw it I thought TPU website was hacked.

Sorry, it's correct for me. Just checked again and I still can't see it. Might have something to do with cookies, perhaps. I thought it would be the same for everyone, but maybe not.

this made me chuckle

Boooooo!!!!!!11

I actually liked the fresh, new colors.

Don't you watch sports and racing?

A bit of yellow/orange in borders, not such a big deal after you get adjusted.

Great thoughts here, thanks everyone. I have to say I agree with everything you wrote, as impossible as that may sound, and thanks for the civilized discussion.

We will definitely limit colors for the wallpaper in the future, for all advertisers, as that's what the overwhelming majority has an issue with. Also I'll be stricter with the design language. Our wallpapers usually look great, because I keep nagging advertisers to fix even small things. This time I was slacking and thought "it's fine".

I've always hated "in your face ads", that's why we don't have any popups, autoplay videos or similar shit. I'm also working hard with advertisers to mostly show static ads, or with only minimal animation. We have respect for your privacy, there's no tracking cookies, no external networks, we don't share any data (that's why no cookie notice either). We sell all our ads directly, which gives us more control, cuts out the middle-man and makes content more relevant to you. During COVID this has been making a huge difference for us. While ads on YT, FB, Google were just stopped with one click, we actually have good relations with advertisers, who kept their campaigns going, also because we are looking for long-term relationships, not just the quick buck. Business is better than ever, traffic and income almost doubled in one year.

Still, operating a site as big as TPU costs serious money, and people have to eat, too. (out of all the gazillion websites on the planet, only ~5000 are bigger than TPU https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/techpowerup.com)

On the topic of mining, yes I know it's controversial, you can see that even here in this thread. I believe that Nicehash is mining for the small guys, who already have gaming hardware and are just trying to make a buck, without messing around too much. I also had the thought that it could help some people make money to pay for their next GPU. Sure, there's big miners on Nicehash, too, I still don't think these guys are who steal the cards from us. Actually (at least for 2020, and I have no data on that), I don't think mining has been the big problem for these new launches. Supply was simply too low, and demand too high. Graphics cards (and GPU chips) are produced in batches, it's not constant production with daily output like in a car factory. So once your production run has ended, and you've sold the chips you have, it will take a long long time before you can get more from the foundry.

@Vya Domus made a great point that Nicehash could be the gateway drug into mining because it lowers the barrier of entry, I didn't think of that, possibly true.

@Vayra86 Patreon is absolutely not required, it's something purely optional for you to express support for TPU and get something in return. The income from Patreon is not even 1% of our total, financially it's a waste of time, yet I keep it going, because I feel like the benefits are interesting for the hardcore TPUers, and the coding is already part of the site engine anyway (coding time I invested is still bigger than the combined income of all Patreon so far). Just one wallpaper will bring in more in one 48h run than all Patreon for multiple years.

Personally I don't mine, my electricity costs 30 eurocents per kWh. Like many I think it's a waste of energy, but it's not my place to tell you what to do with your hardware or money. I also don't invest in Bitcoin or similar, it's more of a gamble than proper investing (imo) @ZenZimZaliben

@Dragokar once again, I'm sorry for the warning that you got for posting in the technical issues thread. technically the mods were correct for enforcing "on topic", that's why I moved all the discussion to this thread and removed your warnings

@ThrashZone dont bother "clicking the ad just to support us", nearly all of our advertising is CPM, so paid by the impression/view, not by the click or signup action. Of course, if something interests you, click it, we do measure banner performance, and it's useful feedback to our advertisers too (all data is anonymized)

@yotano211 Our wallpapers run for 48 hours, efficiency goes down anyway after a while
@W1zzard's Post #203 mentions no tracking cookies. (BTW W1zzard, you the man!)

@qubit Simply refreshing the [page] is all I needed to do, cookies shouldn't have anything to do with it.

Edit: For typo.

This is impossible, the ad has been stopped for many hours. Maybe you still had the tab open?

When I posted that comment my PC had just turned on, so the tab was fresh :)

This was taken just now after about 15 refreshes. Or are we only talking about the page-wide banner ad?

Yeah the wallpaper runs 48 hours as I mentioned. Their regular banner campaign is running for the whole month at least

This is not the ad you're looking for. Move along.

(Jokes aside, this thread was about the banner-background ad at the top and the side which was quite obnoxious. The small one to the right is something different.)

My mistake! I thought it was Nicehash being advertised in general, not the severity of it visually that was the problem being brought up.
Then I'm unsure why people are discussing the morals/ethics of mining here, seeing as it's apparently OK to advertise it on the front page, as long as it's small and not a banner ad? I thought the issue was mining = bad, therefore people were mad TPU was advertising for Nicehash, period? Or is it OK as long as it's not too egregiously presented?

FFS! Havent you heard for AdBlock?

Nope, it's not just "refreshing". It's just not there for me, I know how to work a computer. Tried several browsers across two computers to prove the point, in fact. One of them had never seen TPU before, either. Maybe something is stuck on your browser if you still see it. Try deleting cookies and clearing the cache and I'll bet you it disappears.

You really blew it with that one. The best thing about TPU was the interface, yet you shoved that garbage to us all day long.

Gotta love how a commenter tried to say you were Euro trash.

What's wrong with you? Money / greed too much? Stay with the Seasonic ads and finally be a man. Or stick with that Luke loser's pornstar loving discord and stay in your own hell.

I am getting about $12 CAD a day with two RTX 3070's. I dunno about that amount on 3080. But hey, if you are, awesome! I may buy a 3080 from a guy over in Taiwan.
Right now I am looking for another 6800XT. I make about 4 to 6 Euros (I have my wallet set to euros) a day with one. I really only run it when I working though. Plus there are a ton of crossfire Games in my library that will absolutely fly. I almost bought a Pulse for $1420 off Kijji but the part of town that was requested for the meet was dissatisfactory. I currently have the Asus Strix LC 6800XT on order through a retailer but they have 6 on order Canada wide and 2 cards in transit. I will get the card for $1299. With tax I will end up paying about $50 more than getting the Pulse but I would be much more comfortable spending that kind of money at a retailer than exchanging it on the street. Unfortunately the block for my 6800XT Gaming X Trio is 3-4 weeks out of availability. For that card I only need the block but the cooler performs so good I am seriously torn.

Not showing for me either since yesterday.

Since you didn't actually read what I said I will repeat myself in a more concise format.

@W1zzard said, in post #203: "We have respect for your privacy, there's no tracking cookies, no external networks, we don't share any data (that's why no cookie notice either)."
@Slesreth said in post #235: "Simply refreshing the [page] is all I needed to do, cookies shouldn't have anything to do with it."

In addendum; Cookies are not used on TPU to track anything you do on TPU. @W1zzard is very clear in several places on this site that he works closely with advertisers so that they do not either, provided a user stays on TPU.

All background ads I've seen @W1zzard use on this site have never lasted for more than a couple days. I said that refreshing the page was all I needed to do. I never said it even bothered me. I am sorry for the small typo in my post but, the meaning remained clear. The 'the' could have been removed and/or the 'page' could have said anything that referred to the tab it was in. I was only responding to your assertation that @kayjay010101 still saw the add because of cookies. In post #238 @kayjay010101 showed what they were seeing and in post #241 @kayjay010101 further absolved themselves after understanding how the ad was intended to work.

No, as the thread title directly states, it's about the Nicehash ad itself, not it's size or colour.

I really don't like your attitude. So condescending and patronising. I'm right and you know it, now give it up.
