haha, i thought it would be cool if we can rate each user or their threads as fanboish or less helpful. or may be something like ratings of posts on youtube.

what do you think?

Sorry but I don't think it's a very good idea.

Yes, I though about abuse, but feelings?
Hey some people need to wake up occasionally from their dreams. Or we can make it optional for every user...

... and I just want to say that i am not advocating this, just throwing an idea here, nothing more.

I think this would unfortunately rip TPU apart and would result in a lot of bans

Bad idea. Abuse and flaming will come of it. Even the thanks system has a tendency to get abused.

Did you mean for this to be like a reverse "Rate This Thread" that TPU already has, or like actually be able to explain why you thought a post was good, like explaining your thanks.

definately, we need to try to keep the amount of flaming and abuse here to a minimum.

One possible thing that can be done is to have the karma rating that some forums have. It is similar to the thanks system but in this case other members can give postive or negative marks to a member for his/her posts that will total in positive or negative karma. But again, it is quite possible that it will be abused here, it just works in some places but not in others.

Honestly, I haven't though of anything solid right now or how it should work. But I've been reading some posts and I was like ..."ugh... these people need to get a fanboy meter instead of their stars."...
a guy came here to ask for help and instead he gets biased opinion. If a user will be marked as fanboy, the guy who asked for help will be sure to avoid fanboy's advice. At least that should work well for built advices ... i think.

And if you guys like it, then first we need to think of a way to avoid abuse.

Ah, I see what you mean a bit better now. I now agree with the point both you and Polaris573 made about feelings. They will get hurt, but some people have to get over it, and themselves and realize they are fan boys. But without fan boys would we have things like CES, CeBit(is that right?), auto shows, comic conventions, anime conventions, etc?

The problem is that everyone is biased to some degree, and other people are just less informed... I like the idea tho it definitely has potential to work.

this is why i think the karma thing would work better. its not just gonna be limited to fanboyism but will give a clear overall picture of the person's reputation. If a person is always helpful to others, offers good advice his karma will be good and so on. The thanks system is limited in this respect, it only allows others to rate a person positively not negatively.

I really don't nvidia think this is a good nvidia idea. This would start nvidia fights and inevitably get people to start nvidia hating EVERYONE because they nvidia feel that everyone is against them. It would nvidia be like rating comments. There's no accountability nvidia and people would vote dishonestly.ati?

that's the issue... accountability. how about everytime you vote against someone, you lose a karma point? and if you have no karma you cant vote against?

Being arose by technology is one thing, being ignorant is another. Openmindness allows things like comic conventions and anime and everything else. The thing is, we can take what we have right now and say that it is absolutely the best or we can view things realistically and accept constructive criticism.
When fanboys say fanboyish things, they flat out lying like politicians do. What do you want newcomers to TPU learn? Lies or the truth?

... my composition class shows

But who determines how many karma points we get, and how do we get more? I do think in the end Polaris is right, it wouldn't work.

Hey some people need to wake up occasionally from their dreams.

Yes feelings. All it takes is one overly sensitive person to get upset who then proceeds to do his best to make other people upset (usually succeeding because e-people are suckers for drama) resulting in mass flaming. This causes me to have a bad day and people get infractions/bans.

Plus the moderators work very hard to keep the "ur @ f@nb0y" stuff to a minimum. Having it integrated into the forums is counterproductive.

 A hilarious and splendid idea if it could be executed well. Unfortunately, it would almost certainly not work out (fanboys spamming fanboys, ect) well and would certainly fail. Besides, truly blatantly wrong info is usually corrected and easily spotted, but TPU isn't here to save the world or anything, fanboys will be fanboys.....

Not always, I think a true fanboy/fangirl(can't forget the ladies) will actually do research and back up what they say either with their own results, or with multiple sources, but the immature ones, who just buy them because they saw the highest score at something, or we told by someone they trust, but isn't always right, something is better, they are the ones who are like politicians.

Giving karma would be free... like the "thanks" button. But taking karma would not... so someone who has alot of karma like could label someone a fanboy (anonymously) and would loose a little karma... but someone who has not said/contributed usefully at all, and who has no "thanks" or karma points could not call anyone anything.

I feel like the Karma meeter would become an A$$hole meter... maybe instead of a fanboy meter we call it the "tech-knowledge-meter"? and it will only be positive... so someone who really knows what they were doing would have a ton of points (stars) and would be voted up by other users. - the quiz on TPU could be used to get baseline numbers.

sadly - any tech site you join you'll have to wade through fanboishness.

Thankfully, it's not as much of a problem here at TPU. While, yes, we do have some, the majority of users here aren't. Those that are fanbois really aren't "problems" like some users on other sites.

We have more "loyalists" to one side or the other here - these are users who'll prefer to stick with one brand, but don't go about ignorantly proclaiming that brand's hardware as being the only true product on the market.

As to "meters" - really, really, really bad idea.

If we let each other "rate" each other's level of fanboishness - it'll become abused. Sure, some feelings will get hurt, but what we'd have to worry about more than hurt feelings is that it would incite flaming and flame wars.

Asides, if some user that is fairly knowledgable about a certain type of hardware, that has been rated as being a fanboi of company x - going into a discussion about hardware from company y, no one will listen to said user, or take him seriously.

It would only end up undermining the community.

You also have to realize everyone labeled a fanboy isn't always a fanboy, but is going off personal preference, but does not mean that to be the best. Like me for instance. All the motherboards I use are made by ASUS. I have tried Gigabyte, and DFI, but due to the fact I did my first major overclocking on a ASUS board, and stuck with them and learned them the best, use them due to familiarity. I look at what other people are able to do with other boards and see the results and know that other boards are capable of same or better than mine.
