So you've never tried one? It's obvious you haven't. It's still good for 1080p now, although there are now much better options. But before Pascal and before the RX 480, it may have been one of the best all-around performers and fairly affordable.

The majority of sales for it came AFTER the 3.5GB fast VRAM info became public, because it was something a) mostly invisible to most users, and b) the performance is so good that word of mouth sold people. You'll find most user reviews people were aware of the memory divide, and took a chance anyway based on others' good experiences. And they in turn overwhelmingly were not disappointed.

So maybe you are the one uninformed.

So, you are saying that purchasing a GTX 970 today, when custom AIB RX 480 4GB currently sell for less cost on Newegg, is an informed decision?
Even the 3GB GTX 1060 models are under $200, and the GTX 1060 6GB only $239?

No, @Ungari you stated anyone who HAD bought one is uninformed. I merely stated why it became popular and that it is still a decent card that will play most anything thrown at it at 1080p. Just because there are better purchases out there doesn't negate what it is capable of or make it bad, because honestly, most of the newer cards are overkill for what people play anyway.

I don't consider myself "dumb people" and I have bought used GTX 670 (that died after 2 weeks) and then I got 780 ti and that one is OK. I don't even blame Nvidia for the failure. If I had blame Nvidia that would be dumb. So please stop putting everybody into the same basket with your point of view. Reason for me to buy used since I'm waiting for Vega. don't wanna buy Nvidia overpriced GPU's and in my opinion they are. (but that's just my opinion).

Not buying this. In DX12/Vulkan vega should be faster than 1080. In old DX11 games there is just no way it can beat 1080.

The awful purchasing decisions made by the majority of average casual gamers have led to a market that has been rapacious in it's pricing, and in the case of Intel, retarded performance gains in their releases.

Nvidia has made many decisions that normally would have hurt a company, i.e. Ramgate, 1060 3GB version (GTX 1055), Founders Edition, GeForce Experience telemetry, etc..
But the masses have been hypnotized by this company, and suffer from Stockholm Syndrome.

Arguably, depending on the game engine and it's use of hardware, Fury X was close and often level with stock 980ti. So top tier AMD and top tier (almost) Nvidia were close.
Or in another sense, Fury X beat the 980. The 1080 replaces the 980. So it's easily inferred, if the next card from AMD is the top one, it should potentially best the 1080.
I'm bloody counting on Vega beating 1080. If it doesn't, shit, those that buy top tier are screwed.

so 10% on a game where AMD is faster is really not alot... the vega and the 1080 are going to be trading blows depending on the game... in DOOM vulkan AMD performs excellent, but then in Dishonored 2 is a different story.

Look at the FuryX difference between the two... Arguably DOOM is the best performing AMD game, so if the best case is a 10% victory; then in the games where the Fury X is getting spanked by a 1060, then the Vega will still lose.

To be fair, the dishonored fps is unplayable so it's a moot point. The dx11 angle, it might play out that way (there's a good chance given the history) or it might not. It's still way too early to tell. And given what unpossbility AMD was able to pull off with a 40% and higher IPC increase with the raisins, who knows what they can do with vegans?

I just used that resolution to be consistent, but the scaling actually gets worse for AMD as you go down (since they perform better as the rez increases)....

Point is there are always games that are outliers; and a 10% boost on an outlier game doesn't mean a whole lot (just like a 1060 is nowhere near the speed of a Fury X, but voila - there it is ahead of it in a AAA title that's a contender for game of the year). Probably also why they are not pushing battlefront benchies, even thought that was part of the demo.
