NVIDIA Preparing New MCP89E Chipset for Centrino 2 Mobile Platforms

The warm market response the NVIDIA MCP79 chipset received - in its numerous forms that is - meant that the company is already developing a product line. The newest one is in the works. Named the MCP89E, the chipset, specifications-wise, is a toned-down version of the MCP79. Perhaps that is what "E" in the model name reflects. The chipset is built to support Intel processors that usually feature as part of the Centrino 2 platform. It has an identical pin-layout to the MCP79, so existing motherboards can accommodate it seamlessly with only a BIOS to change.

The specifications sheet, as sourced by VR-Zone, shows the level to which the MCP89E slims down from that of the MCP79. What exactly makes it a generation ahead (as the "89" in the codename suggests), is the fact that this is one of the first platform chipsets to support the generation-3 SATA interface (SATA III, 600 MB/s). It does away with support for the DDR2 memory standard, and has a toned-down PCI-Express root complex with only 8 PCI-E 2.0 lanes to spare. The IGP features only one DAC in comparison to the MCP79, though its output configuration differs: it supports up to two DisplayPort or HDMI connections. NVIDIA may announce this chipset soon, which will further reduce platform costs and thermal footprints for notebooks.

HP Gives Option of 24 Hours Battery Life with EliteBook 6939p

With laptops, if mobility is what you seek for, and the convenience of working on the battery for longer, you would usually buy several spare batteries and keep one or two of them charged inside the laptop messenger bag. Imagine not having to hit the mains for 24 hours on a laptop, that's right, 24 hours. HP is making this possible with the Centrino 2 based EliteBook 6930p put on show at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) event. This laptop comes in two primary configurations, based on the Intel integrated graphics, or ones using discrete ATI graphics which understandably, come with lower battery life.

HP made this possible by providing you 6 hours of rated battery life on the stock battery, and expanded its life with the optional HP Ultra-Capacity battery takes its life up to 24 hours, a boon for people on long-flights, scientists on field work or even outdoor photographers, or even not having to charge up for days before it goes low and requires a charge. The machine put up at IDF for a MobileMark evaluation used Intel's upcoming Sold-State drives that draw a mere 0.15 W at load.

Centrino 2 Overclocked to 4 GHz Thanks to Aggressive Cooling and Software

A desktop-replacement laptop using the Centrino 2 Platform, Intel's highest dual-core mobile CPU, the Penryn-based Core 2 Extreme X9100 to be precise, was overclocked to 4.00 GHz with help from aggressive cooling made by CoolIT and Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility. Seen in the first picture is the laptop seated on an unreleased notebook component cooler made by CoolIT. The cooler uses external thermoelectric couple (TEC) and air cooling to draw heat away from the laptop. Despite using overclocked settings using this cooler, the CPU reaches a scorching 50° C.

The cooler releases in January 2008 and will be priced around US $120. This feat was also helped by Intel's new Extreme Tuning Utility (Iron City). Intel's Dan Ragland used the software to overclock the laptop's CPU to over 4GHz, stably. He commented that the notebook-cooler added around 500MHz over and above what's achievable by using the laptop's cooling alone.

Intel Launches the Centrino 2 Mobile Platform this 14th

Intel launches the Centrino 2 mobile plaform this Monday, the 14th. Centrino 2, codenamed Montevina is behind launch-schedule owing to issues detected in the integrated graphics controller. The chipset released will be that which supports discrete graphics controllers from ATI or NVIDIA.

Intel Centrino 2 for now is targeted towards the business-class and enterprise segments. The chipset supports DDR3 memory which brings in a certain level of energy efficiency with added performance. At the heart of it would be a 45nm processor based on the Penryn architecture. Initially dual-core processors, with quad-core based notebooks later. The wireless network controller supports the newer 802.11n and WiMAX standards. Security and management features come in through the vPro technology.

These 45nm dual-core processors are said to run at 25W, an efficiency increment over previous generation running at 35W.

Intel ''Montevina'' Centrino 2 Platform Delayed by Couple of Weeks

Chip maker Intel will delay the introduction of its highly anticipated "Montevina" platform referred to as Centrino 2 due to technical and certification problems, the chipmaker said Tuesday. The initial rollout scheduled to take place after Computex and until July 14 is not going to happen. Instead, the release date has been pushed back by one month to August 2008. The problems behind this delay include the certification of the Wi-Fi wireless standard and technical issues with the Centrino 2 integrated graphics chipset, which is causing random failures. Because of that Intel will launch only the Centrino 2 CPUs and some of its chipsets on July 14th. The Centrino 2 processors will include the "T" and "X" (Extreme) models. Other parts of the new Montevina platform as well as the faulty chipsets will need to be rechecked, causing this delay to prolong to a month. "Initially what will be available on July 14 are the (Centrino 2) processors and some of the chipsets," Intel spokesperson Connie Brown said.

Intel to Bundle 80GB SSDs with Centrino 2

According to a report written by the Taiwanese Digitimes website, Intel is planning to promote new SSD drives with its upcoming Centrino 2 platform (Montevina). Dubbed Intel High Perofmance SSD, Intel will place these SSDs mainly in enterprise, mid-range and high-end notebook offerings. First Intel will release two models - 2.5-inch Client X25-M and 1.8-inch Client X18-M. Both drives will boast 80GB capacity and SATA interface. The report goes on to say that Intel plans to increase storage capacities up to 160GB by the end of the fourth quarter, and up to 250GB and above in 2009.

Intel Updates Centrino 2 CPU Pricing

DigiTimes, citing anonymous sources at notebook makers, claims that Intel has already set the prices for six 45nm dual-core notebook processors, planned to launch in late June along with Intel's Centrino 2 notebook platform.
The CPUs will have model numbers of X9100, T9600, P9500, T9400, P8600 and P9400 and be priced at US$851, US$530, US$348, US$316, US$241 and US$209, respectively, in thousand-unit tray quantities. In the third quarter, Intel will launch the quad-core Core 2 Extreme QX9300 priced at US$1,038 for the enthusiast market, and will follow up with a more moderately priced Q9100 in the fourth quarter, added the sources.

Intel Montevina Platform to be Named Centrino 2

Intel is planning to rename its brand name for the upcoming notebook Montevina platform to Centrino 2 in order to clear up confusion for consumers, according to DigiTimes. Intel has used the brand name Centrino for four generations of its notebook platforms including Carmel, Sonoma, Napa and Santa Rosa. Although the technology and specifications have continued to improve, the unchanging brand name has left consumers unable to identify the differences, which has also lowered recognition in the market. The new marketing strategy should give consumers the feeling of a tangible upgrade and will hopefully spur demand for new laptops. Intel is set to launch the Centrino 2 platform in June this year at Computex Taipei 2008 along with six 45nm notebook CPUs, all with a 1066MHz FSB.
