Dell Prepares 21:9 Cinema Display with 3440x1440 Resolution

Dell is on a roll. After announcing its 28-inch UltraSharp P2815Q and 24-inch UltraSharp UP2414Q, both of which feature Ultra HD (3840 x 2160 pixels) display resolutions in the 16:9 aspect-ratio, the company is turning its attention to the newfound 21:9 ultra-wide aspect-ratio. Expreview unearthed plans for a new 34-inch display, with an unusually high resolution that could woo away some of the Ultra HD crowd. The new U3415W from Dell offers a native resolution of 3440 x 1440, which has the same Y-axis as WQHD (2560 x 1440 pixels), albeit much wider. Basic math would tell you that it's still a staggering 40 percent lower pixel count than Ultra HD. The U3415W reportedly features an IPS LCD panel made by LG. The display should offer a decent middle-ground between currently $400-ish 27-inch WQHD monitors, and four-figure >30-inch Ultra-HD ones taking shape.

Does anyone have an idea what input is required to drive this display at 60Hz full resolution? This monitor has just under 5MP, while a 2560x1600 monitor has just over 4MP. I thought 4MP @ 60Hz was the maximum of dual link DVI. I hope it doesn't used a tiled Displayport setup like 4K monitors.

I did some math on dual link DVI. A DVI display at 2560x1600 24bit@60Hz requires 8.07 Gbit/s (CVT-RB + TDMS 8b10b), while a DVI display at 3440x1440 24bit@60Hz requires 9.61 Gbit/s (CVT-RB + TDMS 8b10b). Wikipedia says that DVI is "Limited only by copper bandwidth limitations, DVI source limitations, and DVI sync limitations," but considering all the compatibility issues with people trying to get 2560x1440 monitors working at high refresh rates, I am skeptical about this monitor using DVI.

DP 1.2 supports 3840x2160 at 60Hz just fine. The problem with 4K is the display manufacturers, not DisplayPort itself. A DL-DVI connect should do fine as well at 60Hz, since 3440x1440 at 60Hz only requires a pixel clock of 320MHz, which is well within DVI's bandwidth.

With regards to high refresh rate 2560x1440s, at 100Hz bandwidth needed is 410MHz, and 120Hz is 498MHz, both of which have been run with success using DL-DVI, the former more so than the latter obviously.

Given all that, I seriously doubt this new 21:9 display is tiled. Granted we won't know until it's out in the wild and tested, but I'd be very surprised if it were indeed tiled.

And as far as DVI goes, it's on its last legs, especially so once HDMI 2.0 hits.

Agreed, however, Dell has supposedly a soon to be released 27" 4K display for under ~$1000 USD. If that turns out to be accurate then there may be a shift in pricing at the higher end of the spectrum which could trickle down to monitors with sub 4K resolution.

Too bad it's not based on 1600p instead of 1440p, but this is definitely a step in the right direction away from the silly 2560x1080 versions...

Let's hope these 4K displays wind up giving us cheaper above 1080p monitors, even if they aren't fullblown 4K.

Oh, and let's see the end of TN displays entirely. IPS. The real kind, not the pseudo-IPS kind either.

Yeah, I did forget about that, so who knows. Vastly reduced prices would be nice.

If things play out as I expect them too, I'm guessing the next so called 21:9 will be a 3840x1600 which is an exact 2.4:1 aspect ratio.

While I do greatly enjoy the ratio for games, the 1080 vertical of the 29" models is somewhat limiting as far as productivity apps go. So it's definitely nice to see the 1440 version. I was rather curious to see if the 29 inchers would be a one time fluke and then die off, but it seems there is actually a viable market for the aspect ratio.

Please, not this again. There's a market for both, and a quality TN panel can be just as good as a IPS panel for tasks not demanding extreme color accuracy. You can have your $600 60Hz IPS monitor. I'll take a $300 120Hz TN monitor that's 95% as good as yours for everyday tasks and significantly better for games.

I like the 21:9 aspect ratio for games, although I suspect it has the same HUD issues as an Eyefinity setup would have. It would be nice if more games allowed you to adjust the width of the HUD so that it wasn't always on the edges of the screen.

Some HUDs do go to the edges, while some stay in the 16:9 safe zone, and an occasional few just go bonkers. At 29 inches and a 2-3ft viewing distance those that go to the edges aren't a major issue as the corners of the screen are well within the field of view. This upcoming 34" I'd be more leery about in that regard as the panel will be about 5" wider than the 29's ~26.5 inches which is already pushing it a bit.

What really needs to occur is 100% user positionable HUD elements, but outside of PC-only MMOs that doesn't seem to be a pressing concern amongst developers.

Btw, does anyone know at 5MP, what kind of video card do I need to play to latest games at 60fps at least?? Probably I need to wait for next generation top card?

One 780 Ti clocked at 1300/1350 Mhz should do the trick.

Dell monitors are rarely cheap, at least not ones that most people around here would care about. The 34" size makes me think expensive. The nonstandard ratio of 21:9 makes me think expensive. The higher then average resolution makes me think expensive,....

However, if Dell does release a 28" 4K monitor for under ~$1000 USD one would think this monitor would have to be cheaper then that. Maybe ~$800 to ~$900 maybe less.

Indeed. I was just thinking how much it would cost me to upgrade my current 24 and video cards for this monitor and a maybe 880 GTX Ti next year... ;)

What I would really like to see are some extremely thing to almost bezeless (lless?) 2560x1440p monitors

I've been wanting to get 3 of them in portrait but don't want to put the time in unfortunately to debezel them and make a custom frame...
