AMD RX Vega Reportedly Beats GTX 1080; 5% Performance Improvement per Month

New benchmarks of an RX Vega engineering sample video card have surfaced. There have been quite a few benchmarks for this card already, which manifests with the 687F:C1 identifier. The new, GTX 1080 beating benchmark (Gaming X version, so a factory overclocked one) comes courtesy of 3D Mark 11, with the 687F:C1 RX Vega delivering 31,873 points in its latest appearance (versus 27,890 in its first). Since the clock speed of the 687F:C1 RX Vega has remained the same throughout this benchmark history, I think it's fair to say these improvements have come out purely at the behest of driver and/or firmware level performance improvements.
The folks at Videocardz have put together an interesting chart detailing the 687F:C1 RX Vega's score history since benchmarks of it first started appearing, around three months ago. This chart shows an impressive performance improvement over time, with AMD's high-performance GPU contender showing an improvement of roughly 15% since it was first benchmarked. That averages out at around a 5% improvement per month, which bodes well for the graphics card... At least in the long term. We have to keep in mind that this video card brings with it some pretty extensive differences from existing GPU architectures in the market, with the implementation of HBC (High Bandwidth Cache) and HBCC (High Bandwidth Cache Controller). These architectural differences naturally require large amounts of additional driver work to enable them to function to their full potential - full potential that we aren't guaranteed RX Vega GPUs will be able to deliver come launch time.

RejZoRHey, look, another guy using logic and prediction. The fact that Fallout 4 has such great performance on Vega can't be a random chance or a fluke. It shows Vega has the grunt to do it, but something clearly isn't as it should be. You can't at one point pulling stellar performance and in next one barely catching up with GTX 1070. It just doesn't make any sense.
Actually it could very easily be a fluke...remember that uses a dx10 engine that has had modern features just glued on top. Has anyone seen a review showing skyrim? That is the same engine basically iirc.

ratirtC'mon man. IT'S the TPu. there's so many people referring to this site. They know nothing about techy stuff. let us just keep it cool. They seek for explanation and information. they are the people of no knowledge whatsoever about the tech. let's give them those regular users when they come here a reason to stay and read the TPU. Not just because they're fans of one team but that they can learn something.

You think it is a guess? well explain fallout 2k just a hair behind of 1080Ti ? sometimes surpassing it tell me what it is? Lucky shot? C'mon. put aside all the argues and restraints. Let the people that come here get something outta it. Not just there's a war between NV and AMD.
Delivering the message i tried.(yeah Yoda) But i got stoned to death with my opinions. Let the normal folks get something. Also an honest request. Try using no abbreviations here. i know it's a TPU forum and we all are aware of the shorts but there's people that don't. What's forum for? us geeks? or normal people seeking answers trying to understand? The simple people CDADWELL they come here. as you said. At least try to be generous with your point of view and knowledge and share :) Society will decide which way to go when they KNOW some stuff. :) thanks guys :D

BTW EARTH, you are so down to EARTH :D just a joke :D i had to . Sorry bro :D No offense. :)
i see more speculation and support by you here than anyone else... lol!

But how do you fluke such performance and then thrash it entirely elsewhere? DX10 or not, you still have the same scene GTX 1080Ti rendered. If that was the case, GTX should be like 50% faster then anyway...

RejZoRMight be the most hilarious shit ever if AMD drops RX Vega on 30th and it just devours GTX 1080Ti. In a way my inner secret AMD fanboy wants that. A lot. Just to silence all the nay sayers.
well it would be hard to devour the 1080 Ti but.... Well i'm an optimist and i hope for the best. I really wanna get that 4k monitor :) I think Vega's got a decent chance and i cheer for it :) The fallout 4 "anomaly" is wired. I just ope the delay of AMD delivery has some background there. I first thought it was a HBM delivery but now it's out of the picture. It has to be something else. Probably drivers :P

I mean we have seen that dozens of times throughout history.

Why would AMD be mocking Volta back in January if they knew they aren't even reaching GTX 1080 performance which was already out at that time?

Ask the pr guys who have done it for decades... Lets name a few Phenom1, bulldozer, fiji. Anyone had any luck with the "overclockers dream" that amd called the Fiji based fury part?

The overclockers dream was in reference to thermal headroom... ;)

Thermal headroom was clearly the first thing everyone thought when they heard overclockers dream. Another PR disaster.

I can't believe Vega is out, and yet we are still waiting for Vega.... dear God this is hilarious.

bugHe's just calling a duck a duck. What would you be posting if..
xkm1948Dude, so anyone's view that does not align to your hope/hype of Vega is "hater #1" In another thread you gave me the crown of #1 hater. So who is the actual hater here?[/USER] ?
You both missed the point, entirely. I wonder why that is.. reading comprehension, or a bit of bias perhaps?
Much to his credit, cdawall, the actual poster to whom i -did- refer to, did not. Now what does that tell the both of you :)

As to xkm's addressing his imaginary enemies, i criticize according to reason; not bias. I do not recall the post you refer to, but if it was the typical 'bash' 'bash' 'bash' type of a comment, then i'm sure i did just that; would have with any other poster. Nothing personal, certainly no individual 'targetting'. Have also liked posts you've made, i recall as much.

Lastly? You all have a lovely way of avoiding anything reasonable or logical and sticking to what suits you, side depending (red or blue, red or green, all the same to me).
I have repeatedly mentioned a number of things, regarding buyer mentality, regarding 'bestest' or fail (no inbetween), regarding the IDIOCY behind 99% of the purchases done today; be they due to hype, brainwashing ( i "need" this), or a skewed market altogether. I have also, repeatedly, mentioned my own disappointment with a number of AMD products (hence my going to Intel/nVidia last time around) as well as the fact that price-to-performance ultimately is its own metric.
I have most especially based any thinking i may have ON these facts; facts. Not on my wishes, intellectual inadequacies or financial capabilities. Few can say the same.

If you cannot into reason, pretend i'm a fanboy and ignore me. But do not address me when you've failed to even grasp --what-- i was talking about. Fair's fair.

No what? AMD will brag themselves into full on lies constantly. They have the worst marketing strategy I have ever seen in the corporate world.

I think I have said this before and I will say it again. As fully grown ass adults, there is 0% of chance of one persuading another to change their belief. As a matter of fact more arguments will drive people into polar opposites, just for the sake of their own ego. We have some perfect examples here. People like Earthdog and cdawall which are usually quite moderate are now being branded as haters. That tells you how far the other side has gone.

Of course we can keep like this even after RX Vega drops. If RX Vega performs like trash this still won't be over. We will constantly be reminded of FineWine and etc etc until eventually people forgot about it. Then we start our hype train again with Vega20 or Navi.

One thing I will challenge @RejZoR to do is get a RX Vega AIO edition. No bullshit no excuse, just buy it.

Unless the price is silly or the performance pants, I plan to get an AIO or 3x fan type Vega just to play with, if the price is right I might even get 2 or one x AIO and 1 x fan depending on the case I choose.

I'll be happy with 1080 performance for 15% less or 15% more performance for the same price.

The intent is to pair it/them with a Threadripper of some sort.

I'm still running 4790k as my daily driver lest I be branded a fan boy. If things are close/similar (especially on price) I often alternate from one brand to another, but mainly choose based on bang for the buck once a given solution meets my needs (e.g. >60fps on my 60Hz monitor. The 2 x 290x/4790k (re-lidded and OCed of course) have been good to me over the last 2+years but it's time to move on now.

I will get RX Vega. Not sure if it'll be AiO one since I don't have space to install one. Unless I place it's radiator stacked behind CPU one. The GTX 980 that I have now is starting to piss me off, mostly with software that's so broken I just don't understand what the F is NVIDIA doing. Had it for 2 years and it was flawless experience and now it's all thrashed, tons of stupid glitches all over the place and not even in games. It's video streams and video in browser that's all messed up.

Awesome. You can totally have the AIO version, just mount it right behind the CPU cooler. Yes the CPU heat will be dumped into the AIO but from my personal experience it should be fine.

I will mark this and come back after RX Vega launch. Can't wait to see your personal review of RX Vega.

The cards will need specialized miners and drivers to be worth a shit. The hbc creates a latency issue.

i just hope you can use the cores...otherwise, its a side/downgrade for all intents and purposes.

Have you tried it with a 120mm rad trying to cool 375w worth??? Good luck with that. :)

No more leaks I see. 2 bad. Gonna have to wait a bit longer for some other information about Vega and maybe full benchmark spectrum will appear soon.
