Stephen Hawking Has Died

Stephen Hawking, one of the brightest scientific minds of our time, has died. He was 76. The British theoretical physicist had overcome a debilitating disease to write some of the most popular books on the many mysteries of the universe, and had been regarded as the Einstein of this century. The greatest of Hawking's works include the unification of Einstein's theory of relativity with quantum mechanics. Hawking also discovered that black-holes can't be black, and emit radiation, which would come to be known as Hawking radiation

As Dr. Tyson said, he has left an intellectual vaccum in his wake. Dr Stephen Hawking will be missed by all those who wondered about the universe and who were fascinated by Black Holes.
RIP to legend.

He was indeed Einstein of our time. Respect. Also, he was only given a year to live in 1960's, he went far beyond the EOL if we speak in computer jargon :) Rest in peace man.

His work was an inspiration to many. How fortunate he refused to allow his mind to be as constrained as his afflicted body.

I'm not even sure what he did.. but he was cool for education to the public (much like Sagan).

He also excelled in science communication. "The Universe in a Nutshell" is just glorious. RIP

No, I won't. Let's keep religious pedantry out of the thread. RIP is a common expression of grace in mourning.

RIP.

I was charging up my phone and was playing around with, got a new phone today, with the web browser. Logged into yahoo and saw front news on Yahoo's website of his passing. Within seconds I had some tears in my eyes about the news.

He pushed me to study some Physics in high school and college, but I didnt understand the math for it so instead I went for Economics.
THANK YOU Dr. Hawking for living a life that doesnt compare with anyone that I know or ever meet.

I'm not a firm believer in GOD but people like him, or Einstein/Oppenheimer/Tesla et al, deserve heaven ahead of most ~ if not all of us alive today.

Couldn't you phrased the title with "passed away" instead of died...

I'm a believer, but I still respect him simply for being a seeker. A time will come when science isn't strongly materialist, which holds many back from even considering other things. I don't hold it against them per se. It's not just a scientific problem.. plenty of Jews and Christians fell into the materialist paradigm (Descartes and Newton, for example... and the whole European era after Aquinas.. as well as rabbis like Rambam.. they were all Aristotleians. And I bet it's what held Einstein back from fully embracing Quantum physics in his day).

I hope I'm not ruining the thread. My point is, like I said, I respect him. Asking big questions is important in itself.

RIP Stephen. :(:( One of the greatest scientists who ever lived.

At least his terrible ALS didn't stop him from living a long life.

Big respect to Stephen for all that he's given the world. :rockout:
