Introducing Meta: A Social Technology Company

Today at Connect 2021, CEO Mark Zuckerberg introduced Meta, which brings together Facebook's apps and technologies under one new company brand. Meta's focus will be to bring the metaverse to life and help people connect, find communities and grow businesses.

The metaverse will feel like a hybrid of today's online social experiences, sometimes expanded into three dimensions or projected into the physical world. It will let you share immersive experiences with other people even when you can't be together — and do things together you couldn't do in the physical world. -It's the next evolution in a long line of social technologies, and it's ushering in a new chapter for the company. Zuckerberg shared more about this vision in a founder's letter.
The annual Connect conference brings together augmented and virtual reality developers, content creators, marketers and others to celebrate the industry's momentum and growth. This year's virtual event explored what experiences in the metaverse could feel like over the next decade - from social connection, to entertainment, gaming, fitness, work, education and commerce. The company also announced new tools to help people build for the metaverse, including Presence Platform, which will enable new mixed reality experiences on Quest 2, and a $150-million investment in immersive learning to train the next generation of creators.

You can watch the full Connect keynote and learn more about how the metaverse will unlock new opportunities at meta.com. You can also learn more about the company's work over the past several months to develop the Meta brand on its design blog.

Facebook's corporate structure is not changing as Meta. However, how it reports on financials will. Starting with results for the fourth quarter of 2021, the company plans to report on two operating segments: Family of Apps and Reality Labs. Meta also intends to start trading under the new stock ticker that the company reserved, MVRS, on December 1. Today's announcement does not affect how the company uses or shares data.

About Meta
Meta builds technologies that help people connect, find communities, and grow businesses. When Facebook launched in 2004, it changed the way people connect. Apps like Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp further empowered billions around the world. Now, Meta is moving beyond 2D screens toward immersive experiences like augmented and virtual reality to help build the next evolution in social technology.

ValantarHey, that's not ketchup, it's barbecue sauce! That's completely different. It's what human men use when they are in close proximity to other human men when they are barbecuing. It's not generic and soulless at all, no sir. So humanizing! Such character!

/s if that wasn't clear.
Hey, the sauce has already been consumed, the bottle (honeypot, uhm) is a convenient way of storing human souls, 1 lb. 2 oz. of them!

I would like to say that I am hoping that Meta meets the same fate Google+ and Orkut did.

Bomby569This is the real image, you can look the video, i'm not joking.
Some robot decided it was a good idea to put a ketchup bootle as a bookend behind him in the video of the robot overloard. I guess they figured us humans liked it so it would make him more relatable

Joker. Your empire is already crumbling and you are too late.
I sure wish the crumbling would hurry up, though
u2konlineYou know what's crazy , alot of people say they dislike facebook, they hate it and its crap, but most who say this still use the site. Speaking for myself, i found a site called vk 7 years ago and haven't went back to facebook since. VK is the best social media site i ever seen, use, etc. Better design and layout, smooth design, real live support, less copyright nonsense, freedom of speech, better community pages, night mode, better looking photo gallery and music player pages, everything about vk is 10x times better than facebook.
Well, yes. Sadly, Facebook is my one and only way of keeping contact with some people, so it's a "necessary evil". At least until something better comes around.

Regarding VK, it's Russian, so copyright probably has a harder time reaching there than it would Facebook, that lives on the "West".
u2konlineI think the best social media site back in the days were google plus and myspace/imeem, but as usual people ruined and shut down good times.
Such is the destiny of social media. Specially when they do a Facebook and prioritize profits over quality.

I don't trust it no matter what they call it.
I see family being manipulated by it.
They purposely pit people against other.
They find that one issue that makes people angry one way or another
Most of us have known this but now that it's absolutely clear they've been doing it in the name of profit they charge their name? And it's okay now?
I wish I could sue this crap out of it's existence for ruining my country.

Never understood the infantile hate towards this guy.
I mean, does he force you to use any of his apps? Social media is here to stay.
Social Media and privacy are an oxymoron.

Social media is absolutely fine.
We are on a terrific social media site right now.
Purposely putting for profit anger driven click bait and misinformation is not okay.

I'm trying hard to look at FB as just another tool.
However, we're in the situation where many people refuse medical assistance, because they know better from something someone posted on FB. And it seems the head honchos at FB are going out of their way not to regulate content. I know regulation is a very hard nut to crack, but I'd like to see them at least try harder.

Ah, yes, because voicing resistance to the thoroughly cynical exploitation for profit of basic human needs such as social relations is "infantile". Sure. Yep. And societal frameworks are entirely optional and choosing not to use them is entirely free of negative consequences. I mean, come on. This "argument" is willful naiveté on a staggering level. As exemplified by several people above, using Facebook can be a real need, and choosing not to can be seriously detrimental to the quality of your life - such as it being the only realistic tool for keeping in touch with family or friends. Presenting this as optional or something you can choose away freely is, at best, naive, but more accurately it's just ignoring how humans and society works. There is no such thing as a fee choice. Is it really infantile to wish for such things to not necessarily be bound up in predatory capitalist exploitation? Because there is no actual, logical or material reason for this to necessarily be the case. It is one of many, many possibilities - yet we essentially only have the one. Hence arguing for change, or even just voicing frustration over the lack of alternatives.

qwerty_leshdon't you know, he's the meat chef. 100% human i promise.
Hey everyone. We are LIVE from my BACKYARD... where I am smoking a... brisket and some ribs. I am… I’m making meats now. Smoking these meats here. Our little meat smoking. It’s smoking, so. I’m the meat chef. Yeah, someone asked me, do I smoke meat? Smoking meat. Smoking these meats. Smoking meats earlier in the day. Smoking these meats. Just set the charcoal up and you set the uh… the woodchips up. Smoking meats. Grilling, grilling meats. Good smokey flavor. Smoke a brisket for like 12 hours. You smoke lemon chicken. Smoke salmon, you’ll love it. Bison sirloin. Ribs and sausage. So I’m looking forward to… to that. (breathes heavily). Today we got a brisket on the big guy and… some… pork ribs… um uh, on… on… the uh, the green egg (stares at the camera). Meat like a brisket. I got ribs in there. Finishing off the brisket and the ribs. And I’m just… sitting in our backyard… finishing off this brisket… and these ribs. But hopefully, for Canadian Thanksgiving, you get to eat a lot of brisket and ribs. How many of you guys are eating brisket and ribs tonight? Brisket and… and ribs. They taste doubly better… when um… when you hunted the animal yourself, so. Wha-what are you guys making for dinner? Brisket and ribs I hope. Delicious. Brisket and ribs. The ribs and the brisket need to be… eaten. I want to try your brisket? I want to try my brisket. It’s a pretty tough cut of meat. Eat ribs… and the brisket. Are you excited to have a rib tonight? I want my baby back, baby back ribs! Yeah, that’s what I’m talking about. Sweet Baby Ray’s Barbeque Sauce. That is going on the ribs. Sweet Baby Ray’s. Sweet Baby Ray’s. The Sweet Baby Ray’s. Sweet Baby Ray’s is very good. Sweet Baby Ray’s. Sweet Baby Ray’s. We just applied the Sweet Baby Ray’s. Sweet Baby Ray’s. Sweet Baby Ray’s. Maybe throw some Sweet Baby Ray’s on the ribs and… (turns to camera) take it from there. She’s waiting for her ribs. I mean, she uh, she knows what’s coming and uh. Sweet Baby Ray’s. (stares at the camera). So that’s... uh, that’s… that’s pretty good. Who doesn’t like ribs? Everyone likes ribs. Yeah no, this is… this is what Facebook Live is… is for. Just hanging out while you’re sitting in your backyard… uh, waiting for your brisket and your ribs to finish smoking. Are you guys ready? Check this out. This is, oh yeah. Look at that. Pretty good on the brisket. So yeah (stares at the camera).

Those are signs of addiction ;)

Myself... abandoned all social media about 5 years ago. Best choice ever made. Now I watch it from the sidelines and slowly but surely every dystopic reality you could envision coming from it, comes out.

Fun fact... the only things I miss are the filler content, its appearance on social media, including the scandals, is in fact the perfect confirmation its complete and utter nonsense you can ignore/filter out in the sea of information. And the current revelations regarding Facebook only underline that further: more exposure for meaningless stuff that just generates more clicks. Anyone using FB today is just a sheep, and ever since this information is out in public, you're a Lemming staying there. Not just stupid, but also in full knowledge of it. You can't even say ignorance is bliss anymore, you have to explicitly choose to put blinders on to not see it.

Note my avatar and the buttons on that washing machine there, in case you haven't yet :)

So, this is Facebook's 'Alphabet' move?

My comment would be longer, but it'd either be too negative, or violate TOS

This, is very bad.

Read up a bit on the Facebook Pixel, if you don't mind.

Or Cambridge Analytica.
etc etc

He does force you to take part, you don't even have a choice. And when that business model flows back to regular society, you once more, don't really have a choice. Today every discussion is spent 80% of the time debunking all social media BS that flew by lately.

Pretty much true, though barbecue-happy men of the 50s, 60s, 80s, 90s and 2000s might want a word ;) Earlier than that marketing execs hadn't yet invented the idea of bbq as a manly form of cooking, so I doubt anyone would care much before that (save for actual pitmasters and the like).

It's pretty fun to see how often my Firefox shows the little "blocked element" circle from the Facebook Container extension up in the top left corner of a web site, where the FB pixel normally sits and tracks your every move. One of the best extensions I've found.
