Samsung is Considering 27-inch QD-OLED Display Production, to Supply Apple

It appears that the competition is heating up, well, at least when it comes to who is going to be first to launch a 27-inch OLED-type panel, as Samsung is now considering doing its own 27-inch OLED-type panels, following rumours about LG considering its own 27-inch OLED-type panels. The details are from UBI Research via the Elec and based on what's being reported, Samsung was initially going to release an RGB OLED based 27-inch panel, but the company wasn't quite there research wise. However, Samsung allegedly went for QD-OLED instead and the article claims it's more profitable for Samsung.

That said, it seems like Samsung will try to win over Apple as its first customer for the panels, rather than launching them under its own brand. The panels are said to be manufactured in a brand new plant using Gen 8 OLED substrates, which means that these panels will be produced in a cutting edge facility. 27-inches also appears to be the smallest size QD-OLED panels we can expect, at least for now, as smaller size panels will use what is referred to as two stack tandem RGB OLED panels. These will be used in notebooks and other smaller devices. Samsung is currently producing single stack RGB OLED panels that are used in phones.

Neither of these announcements say if they are 1440p or 2160p, unless I overlooked it.

No idea, I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens, as neither was an announcement, it's just industry whispers out of Korea.

For apple it would neither, 5k aka retina. But once they ramp 5k monitors to explore Apple higher margins, 4k for the regular PC market shouldn't be far behind (or maybe we even get a 5k high refresh rate monitor, why not)

Good point, but I want to know what LG is bringing to the table as well. I guess it’s best to wait till CES. I need to see a QD-OLED in person.

Apple goes retina, so for 27" its gonna be 5K and considering they've been pushing for higher refresh rate, i'm gonna guess its 5K120

I find it doubtful that they'll manage to pull off 27" 5K with where QD-OLED is currently at, but maybe this new fab will enable new densities. I know they were working on a way to make QD-OLED with a single-substrate that would enable 4K+ on desktop monitors, but I thought it wouldn't be ready until 2024. If they can pull this off, then that's exciting news for everyone else too.

The good thing about this is that Apple wouldn't accept any weird subpixel layout shenanigans, forcing Samsung to design panels with conventional RGB stripe layouts.

I don't know about that, since they control the entire system they are in a unique position to fix it with render optimizations and are also arrogant enough to just go for it

Yes exactly what I would like to see too as long as it's 100% AdobeRGB and HDR1000

Dont really care about HDR but a true 10bit or higher bit depth panel would be perfect with OLED.

No idea why they are so obsessed with stupid lowe resolution curved rubbish, technology exists as LG already has 32" 4K true RGB OLED (albeit not from LG display) just make it have higher refresh rate.

Yup
Samsung themselves makes high resolution + high refresh OLED in mobile displays and 15.6 inch 1080p OLED panels for Laptop for quite a while now.
That 15.6 inch 1080p OLED panels has the same ppi as a 32 inch 4k OLED , then add the high refresh tech on the mobile displays on that, done.
It is that simple but they just don't wanna do it for some reason.

In a way, sure, but for premium displays like this they're also entirely dependent on support from the creative markets they serve, and while no doubt any premium Apple display/AIO would sell, I think a pentile/weird triangle/other weird sub-pixel layout, even if the OS is aware of it and renders text and graphics properly still, would cause a minor uproar among these groups.

Premium monitors are a much smaller market than premium laptops, for one. Also, "just add high refresh rate" isn't necessarily a simple thing. It might be, or it might not. Also, yields on the larger panels would be much worse than the smaller ones.
yeeeemanplease consider a 24 inch also, i'll buy one.
Not going to happen, at least not until OLED monitors are very common. The market for 24" premium monitors that aren't high refresh rate esports gaming monitors is incredibly small.
