Kingston Also Shows off HyperX Predator DDR4 and HyperX Fury DDR4 Memory

Kingston showed off its newest DDR4 memory modules, the HyperX Predator DDR4, and the HyperX Fury DDR4. Having first made its debut at PAX Prime, last August, the HyperX Predator DDR4 will be Kingston's flagship desktop memory module, with its tall compound aluminium heatsinks, chunky 10-layer PCBs with thick heat-dissipating copper layers, and some of the tightest memory timings, to go with some of the highest DRAM clock profiles, packed into their XMP profiles.

The HyperX Fury, on the other hand, will be Kingston's performance-value kit, coming in several sub-3000 MHz points. With a heatspreader that doesn't stick up beyond a standard module height, the HyperX Fury is targeted at high-end gaming PC builds, while the HyperX Predator targets enthusiasts and overclockers. Kingston set up a demo rig with a Core i7 "Haswell-E" processor, eight HyperX Predator modules running at DDR4-3000 speeds with around 64 GB/s of reads, 48 GB/s writes, and 67 GB/s mem-copy speeds, measured using AIDA64, with timings of 15-16-16-39-CR2T, and under stress from an FHD video playback.

AMD A-Series "Kaveri" Performs Better with Dual-Rank DIMMs: Report

AMD's A-Series "Kaveri" APUs perform tangibly better on system with dual-rank memory modules, according to an investigative report by ComputerBase.de. According to the report, the chip yields its best memory bandwidth when both its memory channels are populated with 2-rank DIMMs each. Either that, or four modules with one rank each. The report also found out that Kaveri can take advantage of DDR3-2400 as advertised. There was a 15.2 percent jump in performance between DDR3-1866 and DDR3-2400.

An unreliable way of checking whether a DIMM has two ranks is by looking at whether both sides of its PCB has DRAM chips; a reliable way of doing that, however, is using software such as AIDA64 (Motherboard\SPD tab), which lists out number of ranks, and number of banks per rank; and of course, looking up the specs sheet. The reason visual inspection of a DIMM is not reliable these days is because of the way modern DRAM chips are designed. There are instances of DIMMs with chips on just one side, yet 2 ranks. Find more performance numbers at the source.

Core i7-4771 Tested, Performs on Par with i7-4770K

It's not just an unlocked base-clock multiplier that separates the Core i7-4770 from the i7-4770K, but also a lower clock speed. The i7-4770 is clocked at 3.40 GHz, with 3.90 GHz maximum Turbo Boost speeds, while the i7-4770K enjoys a higher 3.50 GHz nominal clock speeds. Intel's new Core i7-4771 brings clock speed parity with the i7-4770K, while still lacking the unlocked multiplier. It's expected to eventually replace the i7-4770 from the product stack. VR-Zone scored a sample, and put it through a short battery of tests, that include 7-Zip, AIDA64 ZLib, and wPrime, screenshots of which are posted below, along with a CPU-Z snap. As expected, these numbers look consistent with those of a Core i7-4770K running at its stock speeds.

Ivy Bridge Early Sneak Performance Peek: Any Faster Than Sandy Bridge?

Intel's Ivy Bridge line of processors are not due for release until spring 2012, but it looks like Chinese website Coolaler has scored a sneak peak at the performance level of Intel's 22 nm Ivy Bridge platform by testing an engineering sample of a quad core CPU. The screenshot shows CPU-Z & Task Manager (no HyperThreading) readouts, while the AIDA64 Cache & Memory benchmark has been run. The CPU used is a 2 GHz sample as shown by the photo, which CPU-Z reports as running at its 2.4 GHz turbo boost speed (20% overclock) on a Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD7-B3 motherboard. Rough and ready verdict: about the same speed as the current Sandy Bridge, but with a significantly enhanced northbridge and graphics core. The AIDA64 scores are actually slightly lower than the current SB scores, but this is likely because the CPU is running unsupported and unoptimized due to a mobo BIOS that's not made for it and a benchmark that cannot measure its true performance. Note the memory speeds, which were run fast at 2134 MHz 6-9-6-24 CR2, further indicating lack of optimization, since these timings suggest somewhat better performance than what was measured.
