May 17 Launch for NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560

NVIDIA is set to launch its next upper-mainstream GPU, the GeForce GTX 560 (not to be confused with GeForce GTX 560 Ti) on May 17. Designed to compete with AMD's Radeon HD 6790, the new GTX 560 is based on the same GPU as the GTX 560 Ti, the 40 nm GF114. It has 336 out of 384 CUDA cores enabled, while most other specifications of the GPU are untouched. The core clock speed is said to be not less than 800 MHz, making it faster than GeForce GTX 460, which otherwise has the same specifications while being based on the older GF104 silicon.

With those specs, it sounds like an overclocked 460..

Unless this sells for 200$ or less Nvidia's gonna have a tough time selling these. Me thinks.

So many stupid editions of these cards that i lost count and if anyone would ask me what to pick i'd have no clue and would just send him to buy a HD5850 or something... I really miss the days when each vendor only made max 5 models of the cards for 1 series and that was it. Now each of them makes 30 versions of cards that are pretty much the same crap. WHY!?!??!!?!?!? What was wrong with the way it worked before. If you couldn't afford a better model you just went for the one you could afford.

GeForce 4 for example. Ti4200, Ti4400 and Ti4600. Later we got the poor mans GF 4 MX and GF4 Ti4800 which was identical to the Ti4600, just with AGP 8x. And different memory configurations (64 and 128MB). And that was it. Easy as pie.

Now lets look at how it is today (i couldn't be bothered by writing all of them by hand so i copied them from NV page).

And the thing is, it doesn't stop here. Each subvendor has it's own 50 versions of the same thing with clocks slightly bumped up and another 50 versions with some sort of aftermarket cooling. I like choice but sometimes i just think enough is enough. AMD is no better either if you think i'm bashing NVIDIA. It's just ridiculous and i hate the business model of both companies.

Not to mention naming confusion for people who don't pay as much attention. "Oh boy, look at this sweet deal I got on my 560! . . . wait, why doesn't it perform the same as my friend's 560?"

Really, can't they just stick to numbers, like AMD has been doing since the 3xxx series.

It's at least a different core though, so not as bad as 8800gt/9800gt lol. Also, I think the 5 series is the first (from nVidia) to support 7.1 LPCM over HDMI.

It is just as bad. The GF114 is just a tweaked version of the GF104.
The original GF104 core also has 386 cores, but they were just never fully enabled.

I knew I was missing some. Please, change the list from unordered to ordered so that it gives a better fell of how many models are there. Thank you.

EDIT: I thought the GTX465/470/480 weren't being produced/sold anymore, that's why I didn't include them. Same thing for the HD 5800s and the HD 5970.

You forgot the 1GB AMD versions. I didnt include the GTX580 3GB version as it's vendor specific and not an NV model, whereas the 1GB 6970 and 6950 are.

Far too many cards. Absolutely fucking nuts.

That's just stock stuff. Now try to remember how many OC'ed versions each of the 10 vendors churns out and how many extra of those OC'ed also have different cooling in several versions.
It's indeed crazy.

it will be interesting to see if it consumes the same or less power as a GTX460 while being a hec of a lot faster... other than that yeah its an OC 460, a 560Ti would be a far better choice, espeically if they drop to $219-229

ZubasaIt is just as bad. The GF114 is just a tweaked version of the GF104.
The original GF104 core also has 386 cores, but they were just never fully enabled.
The added 7.1 multi-channel LPCM support and cooler (albeit not much) core is quite significant. The GF104 core was never fully enabled due to manufacturing constraints. (GF114 = perfected GF104)

At least it's not like G92 and G92b where the only difference was the die size and the late Hybrid SLi. (65nm to 55nm, which only gave little difference in power savings and cooling)
