Report: NVIDIA Not Unveiling 2018 Graphics Card Lineup at GDC, GTC After All

It's being reported by Tom's Hardware, citing industry sources, that NVIDIA isn't looking to expand upon its graphics cards lineup at this years' GDC (Game Developers Conference) or GTC (GPU Technology Conference). Even as reports have been hitting the streets that pointed towards NVIDIA announcing (if not launching) their two new product architectures as early as next month, it now seems that won't be the case after all. As a reminder, the architectures we're writing about here are Turing, reportedly for crypto-mining applications, and Ampere, the expected GeForce architecture leapfrogging the current top of the line - and absent from regular consumer shores - Volta.

There's really not much that can be gleaned as of now from industry sources, though. It's clear no one has received any kind of information from NVIDIA when it comes to either of their expected architectures, which means an impending announcement isn't likely. At the same time, NVIDIA really has no interest in pulling the trigger on new products - demand is fine, and competition from AMD is low. As such, reports of a June or later announcement/release are outstandingly credible, as are reports that NVIDIA would put the brakes on a consumer version of Ampere, use it to replace Volta on the professional and server segment, and instead launch Volta - finally - on the consumer segment. This would allow the company to cache in on their Volta architecture, this time on consumer products, for a full generation longer, while innovating the market - of sorts. All scenarios are open right now; but one thing that seems clear is that there will be no announcements next month.

I don't wanna see any new product in the dGPU market until the crypto-s$#tfest is over. Either with a dedicated solution or idk what.

We'll see what happens. I was thinking of either upgrading my 1080 or getting a ps4 along with god of war and some other ps4 exclusives, if next gen geforce is not coming out in H1 18 then it's gonna leave me with one option only.

For as much as I need/want a new GPU for folding@Home/gaming, this whole cryptocurrency mining crap makes me glad that my baby is litereally due any minute and I wont really have time for games for a bit. But on the other hand, a new GPU folding at 100% the entire time im not using my computer would really help out.

Slowly but surely I'm switching to mobile devices because of this crap going on right now. Since even a €400 n3450 chromebook can stream gaming footage nowadays (with windows/linux installed, but still) and directly streaming from your phone is mlre and more viable in 2018 with 845's, A11's, etc. I kinda feel like I will be fine just using a phone for 99% of my computing needs and a cheap laptop that can function as a media consumption device and show my phone apps on a larger screen can help me squeeze out that last 1% from my phone. I'm not a power user just yet, and when I am, there will be a new phone which is even faster and can simply replace my other one. Mobile storage is also going up fast and phone cameras are getting pretty amazing, so I'm done with pointlessly expensive desktops and gadgets and will stick to a phone, which nowadays costs about the same as a decent desktop system or laptop and costs less than a gpu upgrade if you know where to look (that zenfone 5z for a likely €600 with the highest spec possible, oneplus phones, honor phones, xiaomi's, etc, etc).

Do they not like making money? Then again if they were or are releasing some interim consumer card before Volta, I probably wouldn't be interested anyways.

Why has no one made a high end console yet ? And I don't mean a $400 ps4 pro capable of upscaled 4K/30, I mean a $800-1000 one capable of native 4K/60.

They(and Amd) are making a boatload of money in current scenario. Including clearing up of inventory to the point that there is no reason to lower prices of old product to make way for new release. They can delay new GPU launch for as long as they like.

They have to stay within a certain price point to make $. An insane spec console would fail, as not everyone is rich.

Dear Santa,

Please give Lisa Su the power to create a Vega 2 that beats the living snot out of GTX 2080 Ti.

Sincerely,

Your Friend, Elf ID # 1337

Dear God,

Please give Lisa Su the power to manufacture so enourmous amounts of the Vega 2 if Santa fulfills her wish so that price stay at MSRP and even miners can't buy them all up.

Sincerely,

A Friend of Elf ID# 1337

Dear Nvidia,

If Santa and God answer me back, I'm going to have a nice poo while deleting your driver page link from my saved bookmarks.

No, there are cheaper options like the regular ps4.

Indeed. I was meaning an insane spec'd console with no lesser variants.

They might be holding back due to mining and want that cloud of rubbish to settle, release mpus vs gpus for them intentionally disable compute in GF cards to sell mpus.
Probably want to not announce but at another time or discretely announce them to keep miners away.

I would think that by making the silcone wafer die smaller, there profit margins will be higher with the die shrink. Or maybe the manufacturing is not at the level they want it to be.
But there is so many rumors flying around right now, we all just have to wait until the next gen gets released.

perhaps so that the "Miners that Exhausted Current production decide New card mines Better and they then repeat the Buy em all Strategy "

So all we have to look forward to over the near future is continued high prices and a stagnant market.

Sadly but this makes sense... nvidia can sell any 2 year old card (Pascal) for x2 the money (of course, of course only the evil retailers do markups, of course, I would never expect nvidia to capitalize on this) and all those Pascals are sold out... AMD's Vega was joke form day one (for gamers) and is only representation how far back AMD's best architecture was/is... once this crypto craze collapses on it self and mining cards will flood secondhand market (thus halting any new Pascal GPU purchases) Nvidia will pull out of the drawer Ampere or Volta and claim they "just finished it 2 weeks ago - the newest 2018.Q2 tech !!!"... and if market will be floded with buttloads of used gtx 1070-1080ti for 200-300$ (from all those farms and x8 card frame rigs), then nvida will have to (unwillingly) sell its new gtx 2080 for 400-500$ (as it should) and gamers will grab it and nvidia will have huge margin anyway. about AMD - well I sure hope ther will pull out something Ryzen like leap over its previous gen - they do have time (nothing is expected before 2018.Q3) and funds to prepare something on the level of nvidias 2017 (Volta).

Indeed, why replace the GTX 1080 Ti when it's still king. The much smaller GP104 does just fine against Vega too. Sucks for gamers as always, but looking at their recent financials the margins are bloody great.

I can see why AMD have prioritised production of the higher MSRP Vega FE edition... getting a cut from $399 would suck.
