ELDEN RING: Shadow of the Erdtree CGI Story Trailer Unveiled

A few weeks and the wait will be over for RPG fans of the ELDEN RING universe. Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc. and FromSoftware, Inc. unveiled a new CGI trailer today for the ELDEN RING: Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, which will be released globally on June 21. While we're still in the mist about actual gameplay, this new trailer provides some details on what we're going to face.

Will you follow Miquella the King again in his epic quest now that we have an introduction to Messmer's Flame tyranny? Judging from the trailer (video below), we're going to explore a region called the Land of Shadow, and we all know that something involving "shadows" is anything but peaceful. Add here new weapons, equipment, weapon skills and magic to assist us in our journey and who knows, the ELDEN RING mysteries will be solved.

same, I had to watch youtube creators break down the story. which imo is bad game design, you shouldn't have to go to a third party to understand the story.

even the tooby's breakdown of the story makes little sense to me. I just go "huh? Who is this guy? why is the Hermaphrodite a god? Tree? Other lands are shitholes filled with demons, plagues and other crap? My guy is dead but isn't? Why does the mannequin woman have so many arms? Guy becomes a snake thing?"

Is indeed a shame that breakdowns are needed for such a confusing story.

I think it's like the cool guy in school is mysterious and dark and no one can figure him out, and so the cliche girls fall for him. That's how I see Dark Souls/Elden Ring story, except young men are the girls in this analogy.

In my school, the guys that were like that were ostracized by the rest of the school and any girl with them was considered less than desirable.

So in other words, me.

So I guess Elden Ring was built for me.

Well to be fair you have to actively go out of your way to get the story in souls games. It's bad game design IMO. I love exploring every nook and cranny of open world games but there are so many arbitrary quest triggers in Elden ring it essentially necessitates looking at online guides. At that point I end up not caring about the story because I don't like using online guides and it's like running your head into a wall trying to figure everything out. There's no big brain play either where a player can connect the dots, it's just esoteric for no good reason. I know some people tout the lack of hand holding in souls games as well but it really doesn't work well in Elden ring. There's no way I cam memorize every currently active quest in an open world game. I can only imagine what people who only play the game once or twice a week do, probably just forget 90% of the quests. At that point it boils entirely down to the combat, which is frankly the sole thing that holds up the franchise. A journal or quest log is not hand holding IMO so long as it doesn't indicate on the map the exact destination. It's something an adventurer on a grand journey would keep as well IRL.

I pumped 300 hours into Elden Ring but I have no clue what they are talking about in this trailer. It seems like they are being mysterious to the point of being indecipherable. I'll probably still pick it up :banghead:

It's just bad story telling, love the Souls series in terms of gameplay but they sure do NOT know how to tell an interesting story. It's just a jumble of characters we feel no emotional connection to because we don't even know who they really are. Compare this to Lies of P, for instance - now, THERE is a game that perfectly combines Soul's like gameplay with great emotional story telling AND character development.
