ASUS ROG Astral "Hatsune Miku" RTX 5080 Comes with a 100% Premium

ASUS over the weekend released its China-exclusive special edition of the ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5080 graphics card that's co-branded with the Anime character Hatsune Miku. This isn't just a sticker job, but a complete re-skin, with the various metal accents on the cooler shroud and backplate being color-matched with the scheme, including two of the four Axial-Tech fans coming in turquoise-blue. Like what you see? Get ready to foot an over 100% premium over the NVIDIA MSRP for the RTX 5080, with ASUS pricing the card at an eye-watering RMB ¥16,999 (USD $2,369), which is double not just over the NVIDIA MSRP, but also the lowest street prices for the GPU. The card still falls short of the street pricing of the GeForce RTX 5090D, which can be found well above ¥18,000.

Hatsune Miku is Vocaloid (01) character, not "anime".
but it's ok if author is westerner :toast:

Imagine of automobile makers could sell a car for more than twice its price by just making a "limited edition" paintjob...

And it would make more sense. At least a car's exterior is something you always get to see, from every bloody angle!

I posted the bilibili video on Solaris' thread almost as soon as it came out, he thinks it's too much teal, and I agree. I dig the monitor, though. If you check there you should find the link, the stream is in Chinese but Tony shows all the collab parts, from GPU to power supply and case.
_roman_It will sell.
Of course. But in this case, I feel the price point is somewhat justified. ROG Astral is already the premier AIB model with the highest quality components, and this is a collaboration edition to boot, just like the Evangelion gear that ROG traditionally releases. Hatsune Miku and Vocaloid being extremely popular in Asia after all, I'm surprised it took this long.

I like collab stuff, dyyyying to get my hands on a pair of Moondrop's Robin-themed IEMs myself, I'm almost importing taxes be damned. Luck is that it's not an Astra Yao-themed set or I'd have at least 3...

Been done, actually. If I recall correctly, Koenigsegg had a bare carbon option on one of their models that cost the same as the car itself. Porsche also had a chromaflair colors that are, like, 150K.

(it’s basically an exercise in money flexing, IMO, I would just buy whatever car in whatever is the base color and then wrap it in any design I would like for a fraction of the price, but rich assholes are not sensible people)

This is the direction ASUS are going in, the 5090 Dhahab Edition was the most egregious example of that so far, but I'm 100% positive it won't be the last.

I can't really blame ASUS either. Nvidia are squeezing margins so hard they might as well not bother with AIB partners, who seem to get the short end of the stick with a bunch of shady politics, anti-competitive nonsense and if you believe everything that was discussed around the end of EVGA, some really nasty extortion that borderlines on blackmail. Nvidia and AIBs do not have a healthy relationship!

I dislike ASUS for overpricing low-end hardware compared to the competition's offerings and trying to cash in on their name and reputation whilst simulataneously screwing people over with warranty/support scandals. It doesn't change the fact that they're a hugely successful tier-one OEM who know their audience.

ASUS pricing the card at an eye-watering RMB ¥16,999 (USD $2,369)
In USD:
  • 5080 MSRP: 999 ≈ 1,000
  • ASUS listing price: 1,749,99 ≈ 1,750
  • ASUS premium = 1,750 - 1,000 = 750
  • ASUS listing prince +100% premium: 1,750 + 750 = 2,500
  • 5080 Astral HM price: 2,369
  • Waifu premium: 2,369 - 1750 = 619
  • Premium ratio: 619 / 750 * 100 = 82.53 ≈ 83%
A bit short of a +100% but still one heck of a waifu premium.

I would have considered this if it is available in EU, and I was in the market for an upgrade.

WonkoTheSaneUKYep.
www.pcgamer.com/hardware/graphics-cards/theres-another-golden-rtx-5090-made-of-over-1-000x-more-gold-than-the-first-and-im-pleased-to-say-its-absolutely-hideous/
LOL, even as a one-off publicity stunt, that looks like total ass - possibly the most questionable and tasteless use of $500K of gold I've seen!
If it hadn't been authenticated as gold, I'd assume someone had 3D-printed a plastic shroud and hastily sprayed it in an uneven single coat of "gold" paint from a rattle can....

I just think its a bit of a shame these fashion object GPU's arent really going all in like they used to. I guess the AIB's doing it now are different than the ones that used to do this stuff.

Look at colorful Kudan cards or the true Galaxy HOF cards. Those are GPU's that were made to be over the top, absolutely cracked out specs and features, usually cost more than the top end card per generation by a LOT. And they came with a lot, the 3090 kudan had a hot swappable AIO and a wheeled travel suitcase.

These products are cool and they have their place but they really dont need to be worth their specific asking price, but they do need to have enough nonsense bundled in with them that i dont feel like im being entirely fleeced.
A regular card with a cool color scheme/branding and very little else doesnt feel like its worth double msrp. I want more interesting features for that kind of money.

To be fair, a lot of auto companies do sell exclusive paint colors, but not all of them charge double. Not to the same degree as the ultra-lux halo cars from Koenigsegg or Lambo where they'll even limit the color to only 1 customer, but even Toyota sells exclusive, limited edition year colors that aren't available normally again afterwards (though they do occasionally add a popular year color back into the line up down the line), and they come at a markup.

Each and every unit manufactured will be sold as soon as it's listed, and retain extreme resale value due to being an ASUS ROG and a Hatsune Miku collab card.

What's worse is that the people buying these cards KNOW they're overpaying and are doing it for the bling-bling factor...

I don't hate the themed products, the Hatsune Miku theme is cool, but Asus charging a 100% premium is egregious. Asus should at least put some custom colored aqua blue-green Noctua fans on it, and include a deskmat and an exclusive Hatsune Miku figure.
