Intel Gains CPU Market-Share as AMD Loses Ground

Whichever way the global economy is headed, 3Q, 2008 hasn't been a bad period for computer hardware industry. The GPU market saw its bumper sale in six years, with both NVIDIA and AMD reaping inflows. Similar trends were also reported with other sections of the industry. The CPU for one, is commodity closely linked to the growth of the industry. 3Q 2008 saw record earnings for Intel as well, as the silicon giant continued its market-share gains into rival AMD, as recorded by market observer iSuppli.

According to iSuppli figures held by Information Week, Intel now holds a massive 80.4% of the CPU market share, which is up 1.7% from Q3 2007. AMD's share on the other hand fell 1.8 percentage points to 12.1% from 13.9% a year ago. Compared to Q2 2008, AMD's market share grew by 0.1%, and Intel's grew by 0.3%. There is a clear influence of smaller CPU vendors that has affected AMD's share. These smaller vendors are finding it increasingly difficult to compete on a global scale amidst the economic crisis.

Well, I saw this coming, and I'm sure many of you have too. The economic situation leaves some (including myself) prioritizing my cash flow away from luxury items (PC parts) and more into necessities (college tuition, food, gas, etc).

AMD isn't doing horribly, but it should really focus on bringing in it's 45nm architecture soon (From what I've seen, this brings massive clockspeed gains) in order to refresh interest in the market. If AMD can keep its prices low while bringing in this new die shrink, I can see a lot of new sales in the near future. Nehalem and high-end Penryn just dont appeal to those who want a CPU for $250 or less, no matter how great performance is.

I think a lot of the NVIDIA/AMD boom has to do with the explosion of big-name titles already released with a lot more soon-to-be-released.

Spore + Expansions coming
Far Cry 2
Fallout 3
Dead Space
GTA IV
Saints Row 2
Fable II
Crysis Warhead
Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway
James Bond 007: Quantum of Solace
Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3
The Sims 3

The list goes on and on. Most of 2006, 2007, and 2008 were pretty slow--now we have an onslaught of A-list titles and with A-list titles comes hardware updates.

Not surprising. AMD need to bring out some more "exciting" CPUs, they need to get their ass in gear and get Deneb out.

i think propus will be a really good cpu for them. same as deneb but no l3. has a 95W tdp at 2.8ghz compared to deneb with 125W at 2.8ghz. looks like it will be a really good value cpu if they can price it right. if propus is sub $100 then it should be amazing.

I think Deneb will help them get back a share of the market, though not as much as I would like :D

I'm thinking it will, too - but time will tell. With the global economy the way it is, AMD still isn't out of the woods, yet. Hopefully ATI will continue to be their strongest point in the mean time . . .
