Raijintek Intros Ampere Series ATX 3.0 PSUs with 80 Plus Platinum Rating

Raijintek over the weekend debuted the Ampere series of fully modular ATX 3.0 power supplies. The lineup currently only has a 1200 W model, but the company is working to add more variants based on wattage. This is Raijintek's first PSU series to meet 80 Plus Platinum and Cybenetics Platinum 230 V switching efficiency ratings. Although there's just the 1200 W variant, there are two color options, black and matte white. These impact not just the color of the PSU's body, but also the included modular cables. The PSU meets ATX 3.0 and PCIe Gen 5 specifications, and includes a 600 W-capable 12V-2x6 modular cable. This is a more durable successor to the 12VHPWR connector that maintains compatibility with it.

Besides the 600 W 12V-2x6, and a 24-pin ATX, you get four 6+2 pin PCIe power, two 8-pin EPS, eight SATA power, three Molex, and one Berg. Under the hood, the Raijintek Ampere features a single +12 V rail design, with active PFC, LLC, and DC-to-DC switching. Protections are included against over/under voltage, overcurrent, overpower, and short-circuit. The PSU uses a 120 mm fluid dynamic bearing fan that can stay off up to 40% of +12 V load. The PSU measures 14 cm in length, which should play well with mid-tower cases, especially given its 1200 W wattage. The company didn't reveal pricing.

SilverStone Intros Extreme1200R Platinum, an SFX-L PSU with 12V-2x6 Connector

SilverStone today introduced what is possibly the highest Wattage PSU in the SFX-L form-factor, the Extreme1200R Platinum. This contemporary PSU meets SFX12V 4.1 specification, which is comparable to ATX 3.1, along with PCIe CEM 5. It includes a native 12V-2x6 power connector capable of 600 W continuous power delivery and excursions within the PCIe Gen 5 spec. 12V-2x6 is a successor to 12VHPWR, and is designed to be less flimsy and prone to burn-outs than 12VHPWR, from improper connector coupling or cable bending.

The SilverStone Extreme1200R Platinum delivers 1200 W using a single 100 A +12 V rail, with Cybenetics Platinum rated switching efficiency. It comes with an all Japanese capacitor design, with most common electrical protections, against over/under voltage, overload, overheat, and short-circuit. A 120 mm fluid dynamic bearing fan is used to keep cool. Connectors include a 24-pin ATX, two 4+4 pin EPS, a 600 W 12V-2x6, four 6+2 pin PCIe, eight SATA power, three 4-pin Molex, and a Berg. The company didn't reveal pricing.

Raijintek Intros Cratos Series ATX 3.0 Power Supplies with 80 Plus Gold Efficiency

Raijintek today introduced the Cratos line of premium modular power supplies that meet the ATX 3.0 specification. These are available in a total of six models, three variants based on Wattage—850 W, 1000 W, and 1200 W, and their sub-variants based on body color—black and white. All three Wattage-based variants include one modular 16-pin ATX 12VHPWR connector that's capable of 600 W continuous output. The 850 W model includes three 6+2 pin PCIe power connectors, while the 1000 W and 1200 W ones include four of these. The other connectors common to all models include a 24-pin ATX, two 4+4 pin EPS, eight SATA power connectors, three 4-pin Molex, and a Berg (FDD).

Under the hood, the Raijintek Cratos series PSUs feature a single +12 V rail design with 80 Plus Gold and Cybenetics Silver (230 V) switching efficiency, an all-Japanese capacitor design, DC-to-DC switching, and most common electrical protection mechanisms, including against over/under-voltage, overload, short-circuit, and overheat. All modular cables included are flat, ribbon-type. All three models feature a compact design, with a depth of just 140 mm. A 120 mm fluid-dynamic bearing fan is used to keep cool, which is programmed to stay completely off until a certain load level. The PSU meets Cybenetics Acoustic A- rating. The company didn't reveal pricing. Raijintek is backing these with a 5-year warranty.

SilverStone Intros SX1000R Platinum SFX-L Power Supply

SilverStone today introduced the SX1000R Platinum, a 1000 W power supply in the SFX-L form-factor. The PSU meets SFX 12 V 4.0 (analogous to ATX 3.0), and PCI-Express Gen 5. It should offer identical power-delivery and excursion tolerance characteristics to a conventional ATX 3.0 + PCIe Gen 5-rated PSU. Internally, the SX1000R Platinum features a single +12 V rail design with a single 83.3 A rail, DC-to-DC switching to other voltage domains, and most common electrical protections, against over/under-voltage, overload, overheat, and short-circuit.

The PSU meets Cybenetics Platinum electrical switching efficiency ratings, Its 120 mm dual ball-bearing fan features idle fan-off as long as the load is under 200 W. Among the connectors provided by the SilverStone SX1000R Platinum are one 24-pin ATX, two 8-pin EPS, one 16-pin 12VHPWR with 600 W continuous power delivery capability, four 6+2 pin PCIe power, eight SATA power, three Molex, and one Berg. The company didn't reveal pricing or availability information.

Designed in collaboration with Delta Electronics (popular for server PSUs and laptop power bricks), the Fusion TITANIUM uses GaNFETs and a planar transformer in its switching circuitry, and is Cybenetics Titanium and 80 Plus Titanium certified. A USB 2.0 connection interfaces the PSU with software, with a dedicated UWP app giving you real-time monitoring and data-logging for the PSU.

SilverStone Intros First SFX12V 4.0 (ATX 3.0 Comparable) PSU with 12VHPWR Connector

SilverStone on Wednesday introduced Extreme 850R Platinum, the world's first SFX power supply based on the SFX12V 4.0 standard, which has specifications comparable to ATX 3.0, and offers a 16-pin 12VHPWR connector capable of 450 W continuous output with excursion-tolerance within ATX 3.0 and PCIe Gen 5 specs, and improved sleep/wake performance.

The SilverStone Extreme 850R Platinum, as its name suggests, is an 850 W power supply, with Cybenetics Platinum switching efficiency. Under the hood is a single +12 V design with APFC, LLC, most common electrical protections (against over/under voltage, overload, and overheat); and 100% Japanese electrolytic capacitors. A 92 mm fluid dynamic bearing fan is used to cool the PSU, which is tuned to be fanless up to 150 W load, and 35-40% speed between 150-600 W load. Silverstone HELA 850R Platinum ATX 3.0 + PCIe Gen 5 PSU Goes on Sale

Silverstone HELA 850R Platinum is probably the first ATX 3.0 + PCIe Gen 5 PSU you can actually buy. It's listed on Amazon for $215. Silverstone had debuted the HELA series in late-2021, but originally with the 12-pin Molex MicroFit 3.0 connector for seamless connectivity with RTX 30-series Founders Edition graphics cards. It's since been updated with a newer connector for PCIe Gen 5. The 850 W PSU meets ATX 3.0 standards, as well as offers an 12+4 pin ATX12HPWR connector. The PSU can handle +100% excursions for 100 µs, a requirement for offering the ATX12HPWR connector. Inside, you'll get a single +12 V rail design, Cybenetics Platinum efficiency, and a 135 mm fluid dynamic bearing fan. Other connectors include six 6+2 pin PCIe, two 8-pin EPS, and a large number of SATA-power and Molex connectors.

SilverStone Intros GM Series Redundant Power Supplies

SilverStone introduced the GM series of redundant PSUs in the PS/2 mini-redundant form-factor. These are functionally similar to the Twins PRO series from FSP. Much like the Twins PRO, the SilverStone GM-series features two detachable and hot-swappable sub-units. The series includes two models based on capacity, the GM 600 Silver, and the GM 800 Silver, with capacities of 600 W and 800 W, respectively.

Both models offer Cybenetics Silver-rated efficiency. Each sub-unit features a single +12 V rail design, and relies on a pair of 40 mm server-grade fans to keep cool. Each of these fans has a maximum noise output of 51 dBA. You get most common electrical protections, against over/under-voltage, overload, overheat, and short-circuit. The main body, which docks the sub-units, puts out fixed cabling. The GM 600 Silver is expected to be priced at USD $599.99, and the GM 800 Silver at $699.99, when the two start shipping late-March in Asia, and April for the rest of the world.

ASUS Intros ROG Thor 1000W Platinum II Power Supply, Focus on Low Noise

ASUS debuted its second generation ROG Thor power supply series with the ROG Thor 1000 W Platinum II. The design focus with these appear to be low noise and next-gen connectors. ASUS used heavier heatsinks over the various hot components of the PSU, which have double the "volume" (surface area for heat dissipation, as well as heatsink size). These are paired with a 135 mm ASUS Axial-Tech fan that is designed to direct all of its airflow axially. The PSU can sustain fanless cooling up to 500 W load, and 12-15% fan-speed up to 700 W load, with the fan only beginning to ramp up beyond 700 W. This gives the PSU a Cybenetics Lambda A++ noise-rating certification. The switching efficiency is rated 80 Plus Platinum.

Under the hood, the ASUS ROG Thor 1000 W Platinum II features a single +12 V rail design, with most common electrical protections, against over/under voltage, overload, overheat, and short-circuit. The fully-modular PSU comes with connectors that include a 24-pin ATX, two 4+4 pin EPS, one 12-pin Molex microFit 3.0 capable of up to 450 W delivery, six 6+2 pin PCIe power, twelve SATA power, three Molex, and a Berg. The PSU features a monochrome LED display that puts out realtime load, voltage, and thermal monitoring. There's plenty of addressable-RGB LED illumination, which can be controlled via a standard 3-pin ARGB connection. The company is backing this with a 10-year warranty.

SilverStone HELA 2050 Power Supply is Hella Powerful, Hella Compact

SilverStone today introduced the HELA 2050 fully modular ATX power supply. This absolute unit packs over 2 kW of juice in a box that's just 18 cm in length. Typically, PSUs over 1600 W are over 20 cm in length. The 18 cm length makes this PSU fit for even mid-towers, if you've figured out what to do with that much power—a record-chasing overclock on both your swanky new Core i9-12900K plus an equally maxed out RTX 3090 or RX 6900 XT. The PSU has been certified Cybenetics Platinum for its main function, and Cybenetics Standard+ for acoustics.

The SilverStone HELA 2050 W uses a 135 mm double ball-bearing fan, and can be made to run completely fanless up to 820 W load. Connectors include one 24-pin ATX, two 4+4 pin EPS, one 12-pin Molex microfit 3.0 connector that you can directly plug into NVIDIA RTX 30-series Founders Edition graphics cards, eighteen 6+2 pin PCIe power connectors, twelve SATA power, three 4-pin Molex, and a Berg. Under the hood, the HELA 2050 uses a single 170-Amp +12 V rail (enough juice to crank a truck). You also get active PFC, DC-to-DC switching (up to 120 W on the 5 V and 3.3 V rails), and most common electrical protections. Available toward late-December 2021, the SilverStone HELA 2050 is expected to be priced at USD $599.

PSU Expert Aris Mpitziopoulos Responds to Gigabyte Statement on GP-P750/850 GM Design Flaws

Cybenetics certification program's chief engineer, a renowned expert with switching power supplies, and TechPowerUp contributor, Dr Aris Mpitziopoulos, released detailed commentary on the recent statement released by GIGABYTE on the GP-P750/850 GM series PSU design flaw reportage in the press. The earliest of this was broken on TechPowerUp, with our December 2020 review of the GP-P750GM, which led with the headline "With an Explosive Attitude."

Mpitziopoulos dives into the technical details of the design flaw being not just a badly programmed Over-Power Protection (OPP) safety mechanism, but a flawed hardware design overall. Since he reviewed PSUs from this series for TechPowerUp and Hardware Busters, he shares his perspective on how the reviews went, more importantly, the back-and-forth with GIGABYTE when the flaws were discovered.

Corsair Refreshes RMx Series PSUs with Magnetic Levitation Fans, Upgraded Warranty

Corsair on Wednesday refreshed its RMx series premium power-supply series with new 2021 models. Available in capacities of 1000 W, 850 W, 750 W, 650 W, and 550 W, these PSUs succeed the previous generation RMx series by featuring a new 135 mm "Magnetic Levitation" bearing fan that's designed for extremely high durability. This design change, along with other minor updates to the internals, allow Corsair to give these PSUs 10-year warranties. The PSUs continue to offer Cybenetics Gold switching efficiency with Acoustic A- rating, full modular cabling, and include two 4+4 pin EPS connectors on all models except 550 W. Prices should be on-par with the outgoing RMx series.

SilverStone Intros Nightjar NJ700 Fanless PSU

SilverStone today introduced the Nightjar NJ700, a premium power supply that's completely fanless. This 700-Watt PSU boasts of Cybenetics Titanium and 80 Plus Titanium switching efficiency ratings; and on virtue of being fanless, bags Cybenetics Acoustic A++ rating. It features a single +12 V rail design, with 100% Japanese capacitors, and ±2% voltage regulation, and ripple suppression. It offers full modular cabling, with enough juice and straws for a fairly powerful gaming PC. Connectors include a 24-pin ATX, two 4+4 pin EPS, four 6+2 pin PCIe power, twelve SATA power, and a handful 4-pin Molex and Berg connectors. The PSU offers active PFC, and protection against over/under-voltage, overload, overheat, and short-circuit. The company didn't reveal pricing.

Cybenetics Introduces Easy PSU Efficiency and Noise Badges

Cybenetics, the company behind the Cybenetics power supply rating system, introduced a new certification badge system that makes it a lot easier to gauge the efficiency and noise of a PC power supply unit when making a purchase decision. Unlike competing PSU certification services, Cybenetics doesn't just use brute 12 V switching efficiency to gauge the quality of a PSU, but takes into account the efficiency of the individual voltage domains, power-factor correction, vampire power (losses), etc., to present a more complete measure of a PSU's efficiency. Cybenetics also offers a logo program to gauge the noise output of a PSU, so you know a PSU isn't cutting corners with noise in pursuit of switching efficiency, and has sufficient heatsink mass to afford a quieter fan.

Cybenetics Efficiency logo grades resemble precious metals and gems, much like sports medals. It begins with "Standard," and goes through "Bronze," "Silver," "Gold," "Platinum," "Titanium," and "Diamond." The first table below shows what it takes to qualify for each of these. It's important to note that the grading system takes input AC voltage into account (110~120 V or 220~240 V AC), and there are different parameters for each input voltage type. For PSUs that support both 110 V and 220 V AC inputs (automatic switching), it's likely that it comes with two efficiency logos. Noise output is a more universal rating, and depends entirely on how quiet the PSU is. Since its inception, Cybenetics tested and certified over 770 PSU models, and is testing many more.

Cybenetics Publishes Updated PSU Testing and Certification Protocol 1.1

Cybenetics was formed with one purpose in mind; to introduce new efficiency and noise certification standards for AC-DC power supply units (PSUs) through its ETA and LAMBDA ratings. So far, we have certified over 660 units, and beta tested over a thousand, to help brands worldwide deliver better products. Besides PSUs, we have also enrolled in chassis noise testing, and there is another program currently in development, where besides power measurements, through our Powenetics solution, we also measure the overall noise output of graphics cards.

We are relentless, and we are always trying to come with new ideas that will help in the production of better products in every IT section. This is why we decided to make public our complete PSU test protocol, which besides the energy efficiency and output noise measurements, also explains the overall performance algorithm that we use in our beta testing program to provide as accurate as possible comparison data. This test protocol has been developed through many years of PSU evaluation experience. The methodologies in place, have been forged after numerous hours of testing and experimentation to obtain accuracy and reliability.

Cooler Master Launches the new V Gold Series Power Supply Units

Cooler Master, a global leader in PC component manufacturing, today, announced the availability of the new V Gold power supply unit (PSU), providing a new and improved series of PSUs for the next generation of high-end PC builders.

After five years, the V Gold succeeds Cooler Master's previously launched V Series PSU and will offer users an 80 Plus Gold efficiency rating. Available in the US and Canada in two wattage levels, 650W and 750W, the new V Gold PSU features a semi-fanless mode that enables the 135mm fan at 40% load. Users can manually de-activate the semi-fanless mode via the hybrid switch located at the rear of the PSU.

BitFenix Vision Titanium the Company's Next Flagship PSU Series

At Computex, BitFenix showed off its upcoming flagship PSU series, the Vision Titanium. Available in capacities ranging between 650W and 1500W, these PSUs are Cybenetics Lambda A++ and ETA-A+ certified, besides 80 Plus Titanium, making them some of the most efficient juice boxes out there. The units are cooled by 135 mm fans, and feature full modular cabling. Depending on the model, you get up to two 4+4 pin EPS, up to sixteen 6+2 pin PCIe, 10-16 SATA power and Molex connectors. The PSUs are compatible with the company's Alchemy 2.0 modular cables.

Cybenetics Announces New ETA-230V and LAMBDA-230V Certifications

Cybenetics was formed with one purpose in mind; to bring revolution to the efficiency and noise certification standards of personal computer power supply units (PSUs) through the ETA (efficiency) and LAMBDA (noise) programs.

Both programs mentioned above use 115 VAC input mainly. Given the increased demand for 230 VAC results, we decided to initiate two new programs, the ETA-230V and LAMBDA-230V. The general methodologies that the new programs follow are identical to the ones used by the 115 V programs, with the main differences being the 230 V input and the different limits/ranges in the ETA-230V.

Mining is highly popular lately (again) thanks to Ethereum and besides suitable GPUs you will also need the proper power supply (PSU) for the job. The PSU has to be highly efficient, in order to keep the electricity cost as low as possible, and reliable as well since it will have to operate 24/7 under highly stressful conditions. For mining purposes, the PSU's noise isn't among the top priorities since most crypto-currency farming facilities operate in dedicated spaces where the operators don't have to stay long; even home miners should install their mining systems in isolated rooms, where noise won't be a problem. As a matter of fact, in PSUs used for mining purposes the fan is expected to operate close to its full speed most of the time, given the high load output, effectively cooling down sensitive components. This way the PSU's reliability is dramatically improved.

Our purpose for this program isn't to torture test each and every PSU that a manufacturer sends for certification since we already do this in our 10-110% load tests (part of the ETA Certification) during which we overload the PSU with the ambient temperature exceeding 45°C, but mostly to examine closely its components in order to find out whether it will survive on the (very) long run. For example, a PSU with a bulk cap which is rated at 85°C will have a significantly shorter lifetime compared to a PSU with a 105°C rated bulk cap under hard operating conditions. The same applies to the filtering capacitors on the secondary side. A PSU that uses low quality filtering capacitors with 1-3,000 hours lifetime under 105°C won't last as long as a PSU that uses 6-10,000 hours caps rated at the same temperature. Another important factor is the cooling fan, since if the fan breaks down then the PSU will most likely follow immediately, especially if it doesn't have Over Temperature Protection.
