AMD Fails to Halt S3 Graphics Patent Lawsuit Against Apple

In late September, S3 Graphics, still a subsidiary of VIA Technology and soon to be transferred to HTC, dragged Apple Inc. to court over charges of patent infringement related to graphics component IP of nearly all Apple products, including iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and iMac. Last month, AMD, now a main supplier of graphics processors for Apple's Mac products, intervened with a counter lawsuit claiming it owned the patents that S3 has asserted against Apple, and sought an immediate halt to S3's patent case against Apple.

In an October 28 filing with the ITC, S3 says that a federal judge struck down a request for an immediate halt into S3's case, but the Commission is scheduled to release its final decision on November 15. The case struck down is (rather was) Advanced Micro Devices Inc. v. S3 Graphics Co., 11cv965, U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware (Wilmington).

Hopefully. Apple is unbelievably aggressive with it's lawsuits against other smartphone companies not because they are stealing Apple tech but because their phones look a bit like theirs (Apple versus Samsung is a prime example).

Apple's main success is down to their aggressive and misleading* advertising and their super powered and probably in the pocket legal system.

misleading* - I watched a commercial for an i-phone that said 'with Apple's Airplay you can stream your photo's etc to your HDTV'. If you are like most people and tech ignorant you'd think that meant only an apple phone could do that. Airplay is of course Bluetooth. Apple simply use an existing technology and call it something else so that they can pretend it's a unique feature to their phones. Apple products are good but their marketing is exceptionally devious. In fact in biblical terms, Apple is Satan as it uses deception and subterfuge to make people blindly follow.

AirPlay works over WiFi or Ethernet. Try again.

Fixed. Still the same semantic. Existing tech renamed by Apple. Thanks for correcting me and still making Apple look bad.

That's because you don't even understand what AirPlay is or does.
It competes with DLNA. google it.

Hey shouldn't AMD be getting more love from Apple for coming to their defense? *hint* *hint*

Gah just make me an APU Macbook so I can upgrade my iBook G4 already! Not that I wouldn't buy an Intel model, but even when they used NV chips, they weren't quite good enough for me. Same price, I could get a much better equipped PC. But, APU for the low end price or maybe a lil lower, I can start to justify a return to paying the OSX premium.

It's nothing new. Their are many wireless streaming solutions. My mate just bought a fantastic Sonos(?) set up. My boss has one in her house. Music, Media, the lot. My point is, This tech has been around for a while. It's not new. Apple rarely incorporate new tech into their devices. They wait and use it as a marketing tool for their next upgrade.

Please recall as well i said apple products are good. Their marketing is the part that rubs the wrong way. And the fanaticism it creates. And by way of avoiding ill will, I am NOT calling you a fanatic.

It works over WiFi or Ethernet because it's soft. It is not WiFi or Ethernet. Nor is DLNA.
The key selling point is that it's not a hassle to set up.

And really, why would any company not tell you that its own products are the ones you should buy in its own advertisement?

so it's ok for one company to give a new name to technology for marketing reasons but not another?

i'm not defending apple, they are way too aggressive themselves - but there's glaring hypocrisy in your case and it kinda ruins the point. and the point is not what individual things apple does, because they are no different than 90% of companies. the difference is in how aggresively apple pursues those avenues, which is much moreso than other companies.

You do realize that the APU AMD uses is nearly exactly the same as intel, and the cpu is much much inferior to the I-series cpus and the gpu is equal to intels integrated in most cases, they also run hotter and AMD is generally inefficient compared to intels offering. AMD hasn't been competitive since Athlon was released, and ATI is really their only stronghold. the new 8 core AMD lost to the I-7 quad in most cases and even to its own 6-core version of the previous series, couldn't figure out what theyre doing since it lost on nearly every front. would i get an AMD, not even if its half the price of intel, due to the ability to do anything i want for 4-5 years, compared to having to upgrade 2 years later due to speed issues. ATI segment of AMD is having notoriously bad driver issues and always has, nvidia is usually better only one major issue in last 7 years, intel is the worst cant even speak about it.

uh well then the above 2 people must suffer from user error

AMD APU is far faster then any Intel IGP yes cpu side intel kicks there ass

but yea no Intel has nothing in the extreme low power category that has decent GPU performance intel has nothing, Atom is a flop in terms of CPU performance vs AMD products in the same power envelope and has no IGP worth a damn, so the E 350 currently remains untouched in that market

as for an all in one desktop no sub $160 CPU from Intel has a GPU that can match AMD in terms of IGP, an APU currently when overclocked offers at least with the A8 3850 greater then Phenom II performance when gaming and the IGP when clocked up is on par with a 5670 / 5750 show me any Intel IGP that offers the same

as it stands currently amd APU is 30%-200% faster then Intels IGP, it also takes an Intel CPU thats $70-100 more expensive to reach that 30-200% lackluster performance comparing price to price intel is slaughtered on the IGP front, Nvidia has no IGP, so there completely irrelevant these days, if you want an IGP that will run games and do what you need it to then AMD is all there is, as for CPU performance why would you need to upgrade every to years, I recently had large amount of hardware failures, fell back on a ridiculously old Athlon 64 3800+ 939 rig 2gigs ram + Xpress 200 IGP and ran win 7 64 bit just fine and was capable of 720p video without much trouble, just sayin :toast:

and AMD APU can actually run most games, and when overclocked an A8 3850 + IGP will actually run games like Bad Company 2 at medium settings up to 1080p at playable framerates.

this is all really off topic tho but eitherway lawsuit or not AMD holds the IGP crown end of story in terms of performance, and usuall driver issues are end user issues.

as for the S3 v AMD or w.e doesnt matter much it will stay in court for years eventually it will get a back room deal and both companies will continue on there way like nothing really happened lol.

Spoken like someone who truly does not know what they're talking about.

But hey, at least you got the CPU part right.

^ thats what im thinking but even then average web surfer dosent need a quadcore, again i was doing the TS3, web browsing HD video watching with a single core 939 3800+ so most of the time its just user error or, cluttered OSes that slow things down lol.

Still i wonder if S3 / Via will come out on top in the lawsuits would be pretty funny to see.

I am disappointed with AMD helping Apple out. I mean the rich bully pays the big guy to punch others, pathetic!

Why people can't understand that Apple is the new Microsoft, they just want total domination.

AMD disappoints me once again :shadedshu They should focus on CPU/GPU development not in legal services for greedy egocentric companies.

Its not bullying. Its called business. Whether a company likes it or not they need to play the game.
