Samsung suspends DRAM shipping to PC OEM's due to record low RAM prices

RAM prices are ridiculously cheap nowadays. However, OEM's get RAM even cheaper. System builders such as Dell are getting RAM for $28 USD per gigabyte. OEMs are getting RAM for such low prices because RAM demand is extremely low right now, and they are hoping to stockpile a large amount of RAM for when demand is high again. Samsung is the first RAM company to refuse to sell OEM's RAM, in protest of the outrageously low prices the OEM's are demanding. Samsung hopes this boycott will increase demand of RAM, and hence, bring prices back where they want them.

However, this may backfire, as Hynix and Nanya are more than happy to fill in what Samsung doesn't.

the actions of Samsung regarding this issue sound quite devious, maybe the European parliament should take a look and if need be fine their collective asses.

Since demand for memory is still weak at the moment, PC OEMs are aggressively requesting for lower quotes. They are now requesting prices of US$14 and US$28 for 512MB and 1GB DDR2 modules, respectively. According to DRAMeXchange, contract prices for 512MB DDR2-533 and a 1GB DDR2-667 modules were US$17.50 and US$35, respectively, in the second half of May.

But Dell is still charging $100 to upgrade from 1gb stock to 2gb, or $370 to 4gb.

Thats an insane markup.

Correct me if I am wrong, but when I read about guys with their uber overclocking ram, it is the Samsung chips that are the prize chips. Let them contine to produce and provide us with the good chips. I HOPE that this does not drive up ram prices any, but good for them to not take it in the pants by the big OEM's. :rockout:

Dell is the one to blame, their packages are getting worse that they are making 400% profit if u use aftermarket prices... 600% overhead if you are talking about the standard OEM prices.

yes, Micron D9 is the best. Hynix and Samsung are good as well with Samsung being recognized for their insane speeds on GPU memory.

just the same theory as playing the stockmarket aint it? you buy buy buy when the prices are low only to sell at a profit when the prices go up?
