So cooling solution is 1 big solid block of aluminium with decent fins and 2nd solid block slapped on top for "aesthetic" reasons.

Until an efficient pcie 5 comes out without a heatsink (maybe Solidigm), it doesn't seem smart to me to take one, the 4 are still the wisest choice

Because plenty of applications don't need Gen4 speeds. Consumer drives in normal operation every day rarely hit Gen2 speeds. On top of this if you pool NVMe for backup or movie library what for you want Gen4 when you'll never ever hit those Gen3 sequential speeds at QD=32. Plus Gen3 drives are extremely cool. For mobile its perfect fit.
