Sapphire Releases TriXX Utility 6.0.0

Sapphire today released version 6.0.0 of TriXX its graphics card overclocking, tuning, and monitoring utility, included with Sapphire graphics cards, yet compatible with a wide variety of graphics cards. Version 6.0.0 comes with a revamped user-interface that not only gives you key readouts of your graphics cards, but also organizes its key functions so the main window doesn't look cluttered.

Since it's the first major release since AMD launched its new generation "Polaris" GPUs, TriXX supports the Radeon RX 480, RX 470, and RX 460; with special features supported on Sapphire custom-design graphics cards. To begin with, on the new Sapphire NITRO+ series graphics cards, it features the Fan Check function, which tests the health of the fans, and alerts customer support to send replacement fans. Epic Games Forums Hacked; Over 800,000 Passwords Stolen

The official discussion board for Epic Games, frequented by developers and gamers of Unreal Engine, "Unreal Tournament," and soon "Paragon," was hacked, exposing dates of birth, IP addresses, registration dates, registration e-mail addresses, and allegedly passwords, of over 800,000 users, reports The Hacker News. The hackers reportedly got their hands on the data by exploiting a vulnerability in the outdated version of vBulletin that Epic Games uses.

Epic Games, however, denies that the hackers got their hands on passwords. "We believe a recent Unreal Engine and Unreal Tournament forum compromise revealed email addresses and other data entered into the forums, but no passwords in any form, neither salted, hashed, nor plaintext," the company stated. ZDNet reports that a larger portion of the vBulletin database, which includes user posts and private-messages, could also have been stolen.

NVIDIA to Credit Marty McFly Modding for Leftover Ansel Code

Earlier this week, it was reported that game modder Marty McFly Modding accused NVIDIA of stealing their post-processing code for Ansel, NVIDIA's in-game photography tool, which lets you freeze your gameplay to take 2D or VR stills, with added post-processing. Late Wednesday, the Marty McFly Modding posted an update on their Facebook page, clarifying that the discrepancy has been "sorted out."

Marty McFly Modding states that they had a word with NVIDIA, including the lead developer of Ansel, who explained that the MasterEffect ReShade.fx was part of some "leftover code" that NVIDIA was testing as part of Ansel's development, and vestiges of which made it to the production version of Ansel. NVIDIA assured Marty McFly Modding that with the next version of Ansel (likely shipped with a future version of the GeForce drivers), it will remove this leftover code, and add Marty McFly Modding to the roll of credits.

NVIDIA Ansel Post-FX Based on Stolen MasterEffect ReShade.fx Code?

Game modder Marty McFly Modding accused NVIDIA of stealing their post-processing shaders for Ansel without authorization or credit. Ansel, NVIDIA's pioneering "in-game photography" tech, which lets you take artistic stills (2D and VR) of your games, gives you additional post-processing tools, to let you enhance your shot. Some of these post-processing shaders, Marty McFly Modding alleges, was copied verbatim by the people behind NVIDIA Ansel, without even a third-party credit.

Marty McFly Modding stated on their Facebook page that "Its (Ansel's) custom.fx contains almost 1:1 the colormod pass with my original descriptions. Same for the other files, where many variable names, code, comments and defines match MasterEffect code, also my 1D gausian blur solution, 1:1, just DX11 ported. There may be even more Framework code in it, I just recognized my own code, there might be SweetFX/other code in it as well. While it's an honour to be apprechiated by such a big company, they could at least drop some credits like we do."

ASUS Unveils the Radeon RX 480 DUAL 4GB

ASUS unveiled the Radeon RX 480 DUAL 4GB graphics card (DUAL-RX480-O4G). Based on a non-reference design by ASUS, the card derives its name from a dual-fan cooling solution. It features a custom-design PCB, which is shorter than the one found on the company's STRIX graphics cards; and which draws power from a single 8-pin PCIe power connector. The cooler shroud is made of glossy white ABS plastic, and goes well with the color-scheme of some of ASUS' more recent mainline motherboards. Also on tap is a factory-overclock of 1320 MHz boost GPU, while the memory ticks at 7.00 GHz (GDDR5-effective). ASUS didn't reveal pricing, but we expect it to be priced under $220.

AMD Details ZEN Microarchitecture IPC Gains

AMD Tuesday hosted a ZEN microarchitecture deep-dive presentation in the backdrop of Hot Chips, outlining its road to a massive 40 percent gain in IPC (translated roughly as per-core performance gains), over the current "Excavator" microarchitecture. The company credits the gains to three major changes with ZEN: better core engine, better cache system, and lower power. With ZEN, AMD pulled back from its "Bulldozer" approach to cores, in which two cores share certain number-crunching components to form "modules," and back to a self-sufficient core design.

Beyond cores, the next-level subunit of the ZEN architecture is the CPU-Complex (CCX), in which four cores share an 8 MB L3 cache. This isn't different from current Intel architectures, the cores share nothing beyond L3 cache, making them truly independent. What makes ZEN a better core, besides its independence from other cores, and additional integer pipelines; subtle upscaling in key ancillaries such as micro-Op dispatch, instruction schedulers; retire, load, and store queues; and a larger quad-issue FPU.

Samsung Bets on GDDR6 for 2018 Rollout

Even as its fellow-Korean DRAM maker SK Hynix is pushing for HBM3 to bring 2 TB/s memory bandwidths to graphics cards, Samsung is betting on relatively inexpensive standards that succeed existing ones. The company hopes to have GDDR6, the memory standard that succeeds GDDR5X, to arrive by 2018.

GDDR6 will serve up bandwidths of up to 16 Gbps, up from the 10 Gbps currently offered by GDDR5X. This should enable memory bandwidths of 512 GB/s over a 256-bit wide memory interface, and 768 GB/s over 384-bit. The biggest innovation with GDDR6 that sets it apart from GDDR5X is LP4X, a method with which the memory controller can more responsively keep voltages proportionate to clocks, and reduce power-draw by up to 20% over the previous standard.

AMD ZEN Quad-Core Subunit Named CPU-Complex (CCX)

We've been chasing AMD Zen for a long time now. Our older report from April 2015 uncovered an important detail about component organization on Zen processors - the clumping of four CPU cores into a highly-specialized, possibly indivisible subunit referred to then, as the "Zen Quad-core Unit." Some of the latest presentations about the architecture, following AMD's "performance reveal" event from earlier this month, shed more light on this quad-core unit.

AMD is referring to the Zen quad-core unit as the CPU-Complex (CCX). Each CCX is a combination of four independent CPU cores. Unlike on "Bulldozer," a "Zen" core does not share any of its number-crunching machinery with neighboring cores. Each "Zen" core has a dedicated L2 cache of 512 KB, and four Zen cores share an 8 MB L3 cache. AMD will control core-counts by controlling CCX units. A "Summit Ridge" socket AM4 processor features two CCX units (making up eight cores in all), sharing a dual-channel DDR4 memory controller, and the platform core-logic (chipset), complete with an integrated PCI-Express root complex. Socket AM4 APUs will feature one CCX unit, and an integrated GPU in place of the second CCX. With this, AMD is able to bring the two diverse desktop platforms under one socket.

Third-Generation HBM Could Enable Graphics Cards with 64GB Memory

One of the first drafts of the HBM3 specification reveals that the standard could enable graphics cards with up to 64 GB of video memory. The HBM2 memory, which is yet to make its consumer graphics debut, caps out at 32 GB, and the first-generation HBM, which released with the AMD Radeon Fury series, at just 4 GB.

What's more, HBM3 doubles bandwidth over HBM2, pushing up to 512 GB/s per stack. A 4096-bit HBM3 equipped GPU could have up to 2 TB/s (yes, terabytes per second) of memory bandwidth at its disposal. SK Hynix, one of the key proponents of the HBM standard, even claims that HBM3 will be both more energy-efficient and cost-effective than existing memory standards, for the performance on offer. Some of the first HBM3 implementations could come from the HPC industry, with consumer implementations including game consoles, graphics cards, TVs, etc., following later.

GIGABYTE Intros the GeForce GTX 1060 Xtreme Gaming

GIGABYTE today announced its top-end GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card, the GTX 1060 Xtreme Gaming (GV-N1060XTREME-6GD). This card is based on the 6 GB variant, with 1,280 CUDA cores. It serves up factory-overclocked speeds of up to 1645 MHz core and 1873 MHz GPU Boost in OC mode (vs. 1506/1709 MHz reference), and 8316 MHz (GDDR5-effective) overclocked memory, against 8008 MHz reference. The card uses a large cooling solution and a strong VRM setup, to sustain these clocks.

The cooling solution is a new-generation WindForce 2X Xtreme Gaming. This cooler is 3-slot, and features a twin-stack aluminium-fin heatsink, which uses three 8 mm-thick copper heat pipes that draw heat directly from the GPU, conveying it to two aluminium fin-stacks, ventilated by a pair of 100 mm fans which rotate in opposite directions to each other, while pushing air onto the heatsink. These fans stay off when the GPU is idling, a manual override button stops them on-demand. You get RGB LED lighting on a decal, and an X-shaped ornament on the cooler shroud. The card draws power from a single 8-pin PCIe power connector. Outputs include three DP 1.4, and one each of HDMI 2.0b and dual-link DVI. GIGABYTE didn't reveal pricing.

PCI-Express 4.0 Pushes 16 GT/s per Lane, 300W Slot Power

The PCI-Express gen 4.0 specification promises to deliver a huge leap in host bus bandwidth and power-delivery for add-on cards. According to its latest draft, the specification prescribes a bandwidth of 16 GT/s per lane, double that of the 8 GT/s of the current PCI-Express gen 3.0 specification. The 16 GT/s per lane bandwidth translates into 1.97 GB/s for x1 devices, 7.87 GB/s for x4, 15.75 GB/s for x8, and 31.5 GB/s for x16 devices.

More importantly, it prescribes a quadrupling of power-delivery from the slot. A PCIe gen 4.0 slot should be able to deliver 300W of power (against 75W from PCIe gen 3.0 slots). This should eventually eliminate the need for additional power connectors on graphics cards with power-draw under 300W, however, the change could be gradual, as graphics card designers could want to retain backwards-compatibility with older PCIe slots, and retain additional power connectors. The PCI-SIG, the special interest group behind PCIe, said that it would finalize the gen 4.0 specification by the end of 2016.

Intel Core "Kaby Lake" Desktop Processors First Wave Detailed

Intel is reportedly planning launch its 7th generation Core "Kaby Lake" processors by Q4-2016. Its desktop variants, built in the existing LGA1151 package, will be the third Intel micro-architecture built on the 14 nm process (after "Skylake" and "Broadwell" architectures). With this generation, Intel is planning to sub-classify LGA1151 into three categories, to ensure people don't try to install higher-powered CPUs on low-power machines.

These are LGA1151-Standard Power; LGA1151-Low Power; and LGA1151-Ultra Low Power. These are defined by the TDP of the packages. Standard Power chips run at 95W TDP, Low Power at 65W TDP, and Ultra Low Power at 35W TDP. There could be motherboards and machines that, depending on their VRM setup, completely shut out Standard Power or even Low Power chips.

PowerColor Outs "Unlocked BIOS" for RX 480 RED Devil

PowerColor today released an optional "Unlocked BIOS" for its Radeon RX 480 RED Devil graphics card. Available through PowerColor DevilClub (and TechPowerUp), the BIOS is optional because it is intended only for power-users. The BIOS increases power-limits on the card, facilitating higher overclocking headroom and clock speed sustainability.

The obvious trade-offs here are higher power-consumption, temperatures, and noise. In fact, PowerColor strongly recommends against using the modded card with FurMark as the company found that it will damage even non-overclocked cards with the new BIOS. PowerColor, however, stated that flashing your card with the optional BIOS will not void your warranty.

Cherry Announces the MC 4000 Precision Gaming Mouse

ZOTAC Unveils its GeForce GTX 1060 3GB Graphics Card

ZOTAC today unveiled its GeForce GTX 1060 3 GB graphics card (model: ZT-P106A-10L). Entirely custom-design, this card combines a compact cooling solution that's little more than a monolithic heatsink with radially-projecting, forked aluminium fins, a copper core, and an 80 mm fan; with a custom-design PCB that draws power from a single 6-pin PCIe power connector.

The card sticks to NVIDIA-reference clock speeds of 1506 MHz core, 1708 MHz GPU Boost, and 8.00 GHz (GDDR5-effective) memory. AMD Demos Breakthrough Performance of the ZEN CPU Core

At an event last night in San Francisco, AMD provided additional architectural details and a first look at the performance of its next-generation, high-performance "Zen" processor core. AMD demonstrated the "Zen" core achieving a 40% generational improvement in instructions per clock, delivering a landmark increase in processor performance.

During the event, AMD demonstrated an 8-core, 16-thread "Summit Ridge" desktop processor (featuring AMD's "Zen" core) outperforming a similarly configured 8-core, 16-thread Intel "Broadwell-E" processor when running the multi-threaded Blender rendering software with both CPUs set to the same clock speed. AMD also conducted the first public demonstration of its upcoming 32-core, 64-thread "Zen"-based server processor, codenamed "Naples," in a dual processor server running the Windows Server operating system.

NVIDIA Announces the GeForce GTX 1060 3GB

NVIDIA rolled out the GeForce GTX 1060, a new mid-range graphics card starting at US $199 (MSRP), with custom-design cards ranging between $199-229. Based on the 16 nm "GP106" silicon, this card has not just half the memory as the original GTX 1060, but also fewer CUDA cores. The card features 3 GB of memory across its 192-bit GDDR5 memory interface. It features 1,152 of the 1,280 CUDA cores present on the silicon. Other specs include 72 TMUs, and 48 ROPs. Its core is clocked at 1506 MHz, with 1708 MHz GPU Boost, and 8 GHz (GDDR5-effective) memory. The card is targeted at gamers still on 1080p.

No DirectX 12 Support for "Deus Ex: Mankind Divided" at Launch

Eidos announced that its upcoming AAA title "Deus Ex: Mankind Divided," which was touted as one of the posterboys for DirectX 12 by GPU manufacturers, won't ship with DirectX 12 support at launch. The game will release on August 23, 2016, with a DirectX 11 renderer, while the DirectX 12 renderer will be added via a patch, which will release in the week of 5th September.

Eidos said that it delayed DirectX 12 support because it needs some "extra work" by the developers, followed by optimizations. "We have some extra work and optimizations to do for DX12, and we need more time to ensure we deliver a compelling experience," the release reads. "Deus Ex: Mankind Divided" releases for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 on the 23rd of August, and is the 5th entry to the smash hit cyberpunk RPG.

NVIDIA Calls Intel's Bluff on Xeon Phi vs. GPU Benchmarks

NVIDIA accused Intel of cheating in its ISC 2016 presentation, particularly in a performance-related slide, in which it claimed that its "Knights Landing" Xeon Phi HPC processor provides faster training of neural nets than NVIDIA "Maxwell" GPUs. In a slide, Intel claimed that a Xeon Phi HPC processor card is 2.3 times faster at training deep-learning neural nets, and 38 percent better scaling across nodes, than NVIDIA "Maxwell" GPUs, which triggered a swift response from the GPU maker, which made significant investments in deep-learning technologies over the past three years.

NVIDIA argued that Intel is using the classic technique of running outdated benchmarks to test its neural net training speeds. The company says that if Intel used the latest version of the same benchmark (Caffe AlexNet), the "Maxwell" GPU will be found to be 30 percent faster than the Xeon Phi at training neural nets. NVIDIA also notes that "Maxwell" is only its previous-generation part, and a "Pascal" based HPC processor would easily be 90 percent faster than the Xeon Phi. More importantly, NVIDIA notes that Intel compared 32 of its new Xeon Phi servers against four-year-old Nvidia Kepler K20 servers being used in ORNL's Titan supercomputer. The latest "Pascal" GPUs leverate NVLink to scale up to 128 GPUs, providing the fastest deep-learning solutions money can buy.

AMD Develops TrueAudio Next to Compete with NVIDIA VRWorks Audio

AMD is developing a new GPU-accelerated audio pipeline to rival NVIDIA VRWorks Audio, the TrueAudio Next. The company will take this technology to the developers through its GPUOpen initiative. TrueAudio Next will bolster AMD's VR technologies portfolio, with a hardware-accelerated real-time "audio ray-tracing" pipeline that adds realism to sound in a 3D scene by computing how sound waves interact with the various objects in it. This is essentially what NVIDIA's VRWorks Audio does.

At the silicon level, processing the interaction between sound and surfaces in a 3D scene takes significant amount of compute power. On AMD "Polaris" architecture GPUs, such as the Radeon RX 480, TrueAudio Next will take advantage of Compute Unit Reservation, a feature which allows apps to temporarily reserve a portion of the GPU's CUs. Real-time positional audio DSPs such as TrueAudio Next and VRWorks Audio are expected to gain prominence with VR games, as CPU-based procedural audio-pipelines can't keep up with the faster inputs of a VR HMD to changing the 3D scene, than conventional input devices. Accelerated audio pipelines are needed to ensure that the audio output is fluidly in-sync with the video output, to avoid affecting realism.

XIGMATEK Announces the Midgard IV Chassis

XIGMATEK today unveiled the Midgard IV full-tower chassis (model: EN8248). Made of SECC steel and ABS, this case offers room for E-ATX, ATX, and smaller motherboards, with a contemporary horizontally partitioned layout. The larger top compartment houses the motherboard tray, and a detachable 5.25-inch drive-cage. The bottom one houses 3.5-inch/2.5-inch drive-cages, and the PSU bay. Additional 7 mm-thick 2.5-inch drives can be housed along the rear-end of the motherboard tray. The case can house 9 3.5-inch/2.5-inch drives in all.

The Midgard IV cooling system consists of two 120 mm front fans (preinstalled), a rear 120 mm fan, and three 120 mm top exhausts. With the 5.25-inch drive-cage out of the way, you can even mount a 360 mm x 120 mm radiator up front, with another 360 mm x 120 mm on the top. The case features room for graphics cards as long as 450 mm, and CPU coolers as tall as 170 mm. The case measures 510 mm x 210 mm x 530 mm (LxWxH). Front-panel connectivity includes two each of USB 3.0 and USB 2.0/1.1 ports, and HD audio jacks.

ASUS Unveils the X99-E 10G WS Workstation Board

ASUS today unveiled the X99-E 10G WS workstation motherboard. Although based on the X99 Express chipset, this board supports Intel Xeon E5-1600 and E5-2600 (v3 and v4) processors, besides Core i7 "Haswell-E" and "Broadwell-E" processors in the LGA2011v3 package. The board's eight DDR4 DIMM slots support up to 128 GB of quad-channel DDR4 memory. The board is built in the SSI-CEB form-factor (305 mm x 267 mm). The board features seven PCI-Express 3.0 x16 slots, and uses PLX PEX-8747 x48 bridge chips to provide either two x16 slots with direct wiring to the CPU, or four x16 slots running at full x16 bandwidth, or seven x16 slots in x16/x8/x8/x8/x8/x8/x8 configuration.

Storage connectivity includes one 32 Gb/s U.2 port, a 32 Gb/s M.2 slot, and a total of ten SATA 6 Gb/s ports. The board derives its name from support for 10 Gbps Ethernet, and features a pair of 10 Gbps connections driven by an Intel X550-AT2 controller. Other modern connectivity includes two USB 3.1 ports (of which one is type-C), eight USB 3.0 ports, and 8-channel HD audio with a 115 dBA SNR CODEC. The board draws power from a 24-pin ATX, a 6-pin PCIe, and two 8-pin EPS connectors, and uses an 8-phase VRM to condition power for the CPU. ASUS didn't reveal pricing.

EVGA Teases the GeForce GTX 1080 Hybrid

EVGA will give the GeForce GTX 10 series its signature liquid+air "Hybrid" cooling treatment, beginning with the GeForce GTX 1080 Hybrid. The company teased the first picture of the card, which reveals the company's latest version of the cooling solution, which combines an AIO liquid cooling block tasked with cooling the GPU, with a fan-heatsink to take care of the card's memory and VRM. The closed-loop liquid cooler will be plumbed to a 120 mm x 120 mm radiator. The card draws power from a pair of 8-pin PCIe power connectors, so it's likely that EVGA is using the same PCB as the GTX 1080 FTW.

MSI Also Unveils the 970A Gaming Pro Carbon Motherboard

In addition to the X99A-SLI, MSI today unveiled the 970A Gaming Pro Carbon socket AM3+ motherboard. The board is based on AMD 970 + SB950 chipset, and is based on a new PCB design. It draws power from a combination of 24-pin ATX and 8-pin EPS power connectors, conditioning it for the CPU with an 8-phase VRM. Expansion slots include two PCI-Express 2.0 x16 (x8/x8 when both are populated), three PCI-Express 2.0 x1, and one legacy PCI. The x16 slots feature metal reinforcement braces. The board features chunkier heatsinks over the VRM and the AMD 970 northbridge, than what we're used to seeing on older boards by MSI on this platform.

The 970A Gaming Pro Carbon gets its name from RGB LED lighting on the SB950 southbridge heatsink, and the PCB ground-layer isolation trace that separates the onboard audio area from the rest of the PCB. Storage connectivity includes a 20 Gb/s M.2 slot, and six SATA 6 Gb/s ports. Modern connectivity includes two USB 3.1 ports (both type-A), four USB 3.0 ports, gigabit Ethernet, and a high-grade onboard audio solution that includes a 115 dBA SNR CODEC, ground-layer isolation, heasdet OPAMP, and audio-grade capacitors. The board is driven by UEFI BIOS, and supports NVMe booting.

GlobalFoundries to Skip 10 nm and Jump Straight to 7 nm

Silicon fabrication company GlobalFoundries is reportedly planning to skip development of the 10 nanometer (nm) process, and is aiming to jump straight to 7 nm. The company currently operates a 14 nm FinFET node. In 2015 the company acquired semiconductor manufacturing assets from IBM, and is using them to fast-track its development. When it's ready, the 7 nm node will offer both optical and EUV (extreme ultra-violet) lithography. Driving the EUV product is an IBM 3300 EUV fabricator at the company's advanced patterning center, in its Albany, New York fab.

Intel to Contract-manufacture ARM Processors at its Fabs

Intel is opening up its silicon manufacturing facilities to fabless chip-makers, beginning with the manufacture of ARM SoCs. The company entered a licensing deal with ARM that allows ARM SoC designers such as Qualcomm, Apple, and Samsung, to manufacture their SoCs at Intel fabs. Intel is among the first fabs with a working 14 nm node, and is on-track for sub-10 nm node development.

Intel had a crack at the market segments typically addressed by ARM SoCs, with its own x86 chips, which failed to see the kind of volumes ARM chipmakers were pushing. The company has now changed tactics to open its fabs up to those ARM SoC makers, letting them manufacture their designs on proven silicon-fabrication tech, in geographically important locations. Intel has its cutting-edge fabs located in Costa Rica and Malaysia.

MSI Unveils the X99A-SLI Motherboard

MSI unveiled the X99A-SLI motherboard. This is not to be confused with the X99A-SLI PLUS the company launched in its first wave of socket LGA2011v3 motherboards, in 2015. The new board features a few modern connectivity features, such as 32 Gb/s M.2 slots, a U.2 connector, and USB 3.1 with type-C. The board also comes with support for Core i7 "Broadwell-E" processors, out of the box. Built in the standard ATX form-factor, the board draws power from a combination of 24-pin ATX and 8-pin EPS connectors, and uses an 8-phase VRM to condition it for the CPU.

Expansion slots include three PCI-Express 3.0 x16, and two PCIe 2.0 x1. Storage connectivity includes one 32 Gb/s M.2 slot, a 32 Gb/s U.2 port, one 10 Gb/s SATA-Express connector, and a total of twelve SATA 6 Gb/s ports. Among the USB connectivity are two 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 ports, from which one is type-C, and eight other USB 3.0 ports (four on the rear panel, four by headers). 8-channel HD audio, and an Intel controller-driven gigabit Ethernet connection make for the rest of it. This could be one of MSI's more affordable socket LGA2011v3 boards.

High PCIe Slot Power Draw Costs RX 480 PCI-SIG Integrator Listing

AMD's design of the Radeon RX 480 graphics card, which draws over 75W of power from the PCI-Express x16 slot, has cost it a product listing on the PCI-SIG Integrators List. The list is compiled for hardware devices implementing the various PCI-Express specifications to the letter. The RX 480 is off-spec, in that it overdraws power from the slot, as the card needs more power than what the slot and the 6-pin PCIe power connector can provide while staying within specs. According to these specs, the slot can provide up to 75W of power, and the 6-pin connector another 75W. The RX 480 was tested to draw more than this 150W power budget.

What this means for AMD is that it cannot display the PCI-Express certification logo on the product or its marketing materials. This, however, may not affect AMD's add-in board (AIB) partners that are PCI-SIG members in their own right, and make graphics cards with their own sub-vendor IDs, provided their power-supply designs comply with PCIe specs. Custom-design cards with an 8-pin PCIe power connector, instead of 6-pin, may qualify as the combination of the 8-pin connector and the slot yields a power budget of 225W. AMD released a software fix to the issue of the cards overdrawing power from the slot, with the Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.7.1 Beta.

HIS Announces the Radeon RX 480 IceQ X² Roaring

HIS announced its flagship Radeon RX 480 graphics card, the RX 480 IceQ X² Roaring 8 GB OC. Based on a slightly modified variant of its dual-fan IceQ X² cooling solution in use for the past few generations of its graphics cards; the card features a custom-design PCB. The cooler features a dense aluminium fin-stack heatsink, to which heat drawn from the GPU is conveyed by four 6 mm-thick copper heat pipes.

The heatsink is ventilated by a pair of 90 mm fans. These fans stay off when the GPU is idling. The metal cooler shroud features a die-cast ornament shaped like a roaring lion, an LED-lit HIS logo along the top, and a back-plate that covers the length of the PCB. The PCB itself features a 6-phase VRM that draws power from an 8-pin PCIe power connector, to support factory-overclocked speeds of 1120 MHz core, 1288 MHz boost, and an untouched 8 GHz (GDDR5-effective) memory.

Google Readies New Operating System Codenamed "Fuchsia"

Google is reportedly working on a new operating system it codenamed "Fuchsia" on the project's Git repository. Some of the oldest comments read "pink + purple = fuchsia (a new operating system)." The Verge speculates that looking at the focus on lightweight code, Fuchsia could be a cross-platform operating system that unifies the Android and ChromeOS ecosystems. Another theory holds that the OS could drive the company's routers and IoT devices. The OS is based on Magenta, a heavily stripped down micro-kernel based on Linux. Magenta's lightweight design favors embedded applications.

Crucial Scraps the Ballistix TX3 PCIe SSD

Crucial today, in a statement to TechPowerUp stated that it has canceled the Ballistix TX3 PCIe solid-state drive launch. The company canceled the product on the basis of "prioritization of company resources and investments." The company however stated that it will continue to develop SSD products that target the gamer-enthusiast market that the Ballistix TX3 PCIe was intended for. "We are, however, continuing to explore potential opportunities for future gaming products and will provide an update as new plans are formalized," the company stated.

Crucial first unveiled the Ballistix TX3 at the 2016 Computex Expo, where it demonstrated its M.2 variants. The drives combined Silicon Motion's new SMI2260H processor with Micron-made 3D MLC NAND flash memory. The drive took advantage of 32 Gb/s PCIe and the new NVMe protocol to offer transfer rates up to four times higher than current performance-segment SATA 6 Gb/s SSDs.

NVIDIA Announces the GeForce GTX 10 Series for Notebooks

NVIDIA today announced the GeForce GTX 10-series for notebooks. The lineup includes three SKUs - the GeForce GTX 1080 Mobile, the GTX 1070 Mobile, and the GTX 1060 Mobile. Thanks to huge energy-efficiency gains with the "Pascal" architecture and the new 16 nm silicon fab process, this round of NVIDIA's mobile GPUs aren't "gimped out" in comparison its desktop discrete GPU lineup, in that they SKUs don't feature fewer CUDA cores to their corresponding desktop counterparts.

The lineup begins with the GTX 1080 Mobile. Based on the GP104 silicon, this chip features all 2,560 CUDA cores, 160 TMUs, and 64 ROPs physically present on the chip. The chip is endowed with 8 GB of 256-bit GDDR5X memory ticking at 10 Gbps. The core clock speeds remain unknown. The GTX 1070 Mobile is an interesting SKU in that it is better endowed than its desktop counterpart. It features 2,048 CUDA cores (the desktop GTX 1070 features 1,920), 128 TMUs, 64 ROPs, and 8 GB of 256-bit GDDR5 memory running at 8 Gbps. This chip features 1443 MHz core, and 1645 MHz GPU Boost. At the bottom of the pile is the GTX 1060 Mobile. Based on the GP106 silicon, this chip features 1,280 CUDA cores, 80 TMUs, 48 ROPs, and 6 GB of 192-bit GDDR5 memory running at 8 Gbps; with clock speeds of 1405 MHz core, with 1569 MHz GPU Boost.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB Equipped with Fewer CUDA Cores

NVIDIA's upcoming GeForce GTX 1060 3 GB is a little more than a variant of last month's GTX 1060 with half the memory. The SKU is positioned to compete with the Radeon RX 480 4 GB, at a price-point close to $200, and is expected to feature fewer CUDA cores. NVIDIA could even have a crack at $199. While the 6 GB variant launched last month features 1,280 CUDA cores spread across 10 streaming multiprocessors (SM), the 3 GB variant will feature 1,152 CUDA cores across 9 SM. This could also lower the TMU count from 80 to 72. The clock speeds appear to be unchanged, with the GPU core being clocked at 1506 MHz, with 1709 MHz GPU Boost, and 8 GHz (GDDR5-effective) memory, churning up 192 GB/s of memory bandwidth.

Samsung to Optical-Shrink NVIDIA "Pascal" to 14 nm

It looks like NVIDIA won't skip the 14 nm process en route sub-10 nm nodes, despite meeting its energy-efficiency targets with the 16 nm FinFET node, after all. The company has reportedly concluded talks with Samsung Electronics, to optically-shrink its current GeForce "Pascal" architecture down to the newer 14 nanometer FinFET node, by Samsung. It's unclear as to whether specific upcoming (unreleased) Pascal GPUs will get 14 nm treatment, or if this is a series-wide die-shrink of the kind NVIDIA did between the 65 nm and 55 nm nodes. The Samsung-made 14 nm "Pascal" GPUs should enter production before year-end.

NVIDIA Announces Financial Results for Second Quarter Fiscal 2017

NVIDIA today reported revenue for the second quarter ended July 31, 2016, of $1.43 billion, up 24 percent from $1.15 billion a year earlier, and up 9 percent from $1.30 billion in the previous quarter. GAAP earnings per diluted share for the quarter were $0.40, compared with $0.05 a year ago and up 21 percent from $0.33 in the previous quarter. Non-GAAP earnings per diluted share were $0.53, up 56 percent from $0.34 a year earlier and up 15 percent from $0.46 in the previous quarter.

"Strong demand for our new Pascal-generation GPUs and surging interest in deep learning drove record results," said Jen-Hsun Huang, co-founder and chief executive officer, NVIDIA. "Our strategy to focus on creating the future where graphics, computer vision and artificial intelligence converge is fueling growth across our specialized platforms -- Gaming, Pro Visualization, Datacenter and Automotive."

Apple's Next-Gen MacBook Pro to Feature a Major Design Overhaul

Apple is preparing its first major design overhaul for the MacBook Pro in four years. The next-generation premium notebook from Apple, reportedly features a thinner form, a touchscreen strip in place of function keys, acting as a second display; and an upscaling of the USB type-C based universal connector concept introduced with the new MacBook.

Apple's Touch ID feature could be ported to the Mac ecosystem with the new MacBook Pro, which could feature a fingerprint reader. Under the hood, the new MacBook Pro could be the launchpad for the company's next MacOS "Sierra" software, which brings Siri to the Mac platform, and deeper iCloud integration. Its processor supplier is unclear at this point, but its graphics processing could be care of an AMD "Polaris" GPU.

AMD Polaris 10 "Ellesmere" Die Shot Confirms Max Shader Count

An AMD Polaris 10 "Ellesmere" based graphics card (RX 470 or RX 480) was taken apart down to its die, for science. Close up die-shots of the silicon reveal that 36 GCN compute units is all that the silicon has, and that the RX 480 indeed maxes out this stream processor count, with 2,304 stream processors at its disposal.

The die is fabbed by GlobalFoundries, on its swanky new 14 nm FinFET process. Redditors good at pattern-recognition could make out 36 "structures" spread across four quadrants, deducing them to be the GCN compute units. Each of these CUs feature 64 stream processors. Roadmaps reveal that the next high-end GPUs by AMD could be based on its newer "Vega" architecture.

AMD "Summit Ridge" ZEN CPU at 2.80 GHz Beats 3.40 GHz Core i5-4670K

According to performance numbers of an AMD "Summit Ridge" ZEN CPU engineering-sample put out by WCCFTech, AMD's claims of IPC gains are gaining credibility, and showing signs of the gaming PC processor market warming up again. An engineering sample featuring 8 cores and 16 threads (via SMT), beat Intel's Core i5-4670K processor. This sample featured clock speeds of 2.80 GHz, with 3.20 GHz boost.

The "Summit Ridge" sample provided 10 percent higher frame-rates than a Core i5-4670K, in the "Ashes of the Singularity" 1080p benchmark. The chip is still convincingly beaten by 12 percent, by a Core i7-4790 (non-K), running at 3.60 GHz, with 4.00 GHz boost. This shows that AMD could leverage the new 14 nm FinFET process to crank up clock-speeds, and produce SKUs competitive with current Intel "Skylake-D" Core i5 and Core i7 processors.

ZOTAC Unveils the GeForce GTX 1080 Arctic Storm

ZOTAC unveiled the GeForce GTX 1080 Arctic Storm graphics card (model: ZT-P10800F-30P). Built for liquid-cooled builds, the card comes with a factory-fitted, full-coverage water-block, paired with a strong VRM setup for the PCB, which shares its design with the GTX 1080 AMP Extreme. This block enables a factory-overclock of 1632 MHz core, 1771 MHz GPU Boost, and an untouched 10 GHz memory, compared to NVIDIA-reference clocks of 1607 MHz core, 1733 MHz GPU Boost.

The block's clear-acrylic top is studded with RGB LEDs, letting you use the ZOTAC FireStorm app to set color and lighting schemes. The block comes with G 1/4 fittings, with bundled 10 mm barbs supporting inner-diameter tubing. Finishing the package is a back-plate that runs the entire length of the PCB, and some more. The company didn't announce pricing, although one can expect this card to be priced above the GTX 1080 AMP Extreme.

Samsung Unveils Massive 32 TB SSD Leveraging 64-layer 3D V-NAND

At the 2016 Flash Memory Summit, Samsung unveiled a massive 32-terabyte solid state drive (SSD) for enterprise applications. The drive leverages the company's 4th generation, 64-layer 3D V-NAND flash memory, making it the company's highest-capacity SSD, upping the 15.36 TB drive the company unveiled in March, 2016. The drive is built in the 12 mm-thick, 2.5-inch form-factor, and features the SAS 12 Gb/s interface. At the summit, the company announced that it plans to have 100 TB SSDs ready by 2020.

SMART Modular Announces Industry's First 32GB DDR4 NVDIMM-N

German-based liquid cooling specialist Aqua Computer offers its kryographics Pascal for Nvidia TITAN X as of now. Besides memory, the two differ slightly with their factory-overclock. The 4 GB variant ships with 1143 MHz core, 1260 MHz boost, and 8.00 GHz (GDDR5-effective) memory; while the 8 GB variant ships with 1121 MHz core, 1260 MHz boost, and 8.00 GHz (GDDR5-effective) memory. Both variants feature Sapphire's new generation Dual-X cooling solution, which made its debut with the RX 480 NITRO+ series. The PCB appears to be similar, too.

Sapphire announced the Radeon RX 470 Platinum Edition OC graphics card. This card is the closest it gets to a market-available reference design AMD board for the RX 470. Microsoft Rolls Out the Windows 10 Anniversary Update

Microsoft late Tuesday rolled out the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, marking 1 year in the market for the operating system, and with it, ending the Windows 10 Free Upgrade offer. The new update bears the internal version 1607, with build 14393. The update is several gigabytes in size, and effectively replaces your existing Windows 10 installation.

The update adds new features to Windows Ink, the stylus-based live notes app; Cortana, the voice assistant, which can now be accessed right from the lock-screen, and is integrated with even more apps; and Windows Hello, the in-built biometric ID system, which has been integrated with many more third-party services, such as Dropbox; improvements to Windows Defender, the anti-malware tool; and various under-the-hood improvements that increase performance and energy-efficiency (lower battery usage).

VTX3D Ceases Operations, PowerColor to Honor its Warranty Service

AMD Radeon add-in board (AIB) partner VTX3D announced that it has ceased operations. A subsidiary of TUL, which also owns the more popular PowerColor brand, VTX3D primarily targeted the APAC and EMEAI markets, and most of its products had a distinct PowerColor signature on their design and build-quality. This is because both brands were manufactured at TUL, a major PCB contract-manufacturing foundry. Following its demise, VTX3D announced that its sister-brand PowerColor will honor warranty and RMA services for existing owners of VTX3D products.

SoC Powering Xbox One S Leverages 16 nm FinFET from TSMC

Microsoft's new slim Xbox One S console achieves its slimness - including its inbuilt power-supply, by significantly reducing thermal load of its key components. This begins at the heart of the console, its SoC. A semi-custom chip by Microsoft and AMD, the SoC powering the Xbox One S is built on the 16 nm FinFET process at TSMC. The chip powering the original Xbox One was built on the same foundry's 28 nm node.

The new SoC isn't merely an optical shrink of the original 28 nm chip down to 16 nm FinFET, Microsoft added a few components to the chip, including an HEVC hardware decoder, hardware CODECs for Blu-ray UHD with HDR; and a revamped display controller with HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2. The chip also performs 1080p to 4K UHD upscaling, with a native upscaling algorithm. The eSRAM memory bandwidth is increased slightly from 204 GB/s from 219 GB/s.

NVIDIA TITAN X Pascal Available from Today

NVIDIA's flagship graphics card targeted at gamers and PC enthusiasts, the TITAN X Pascal, will be available from today, exclusively through the GeForce website, at this page. NVIDIA will be directly marketing the card. The card is priced at US $1,199 (excl taxes). Based on the 16 nm "GP102," derived from the "Pascal" architecture, the TITAN X Pascal features 3,584 CUDA cores, 224 TMUs, 96 ROPs, and a 384-bit wide GDDR5X memory, holding 12 GB of memory. The chip is clocked at 1417 MHz core, with 1531 MHz GPU Boost, and 10 Gbps memory, working out to 480 GB/s memory bandwidth. Like the GTX 1080 and GTX 1070, the TITAN X Pascal appears to be limited to 2-way SLI.

MSI Announces the X99A Tomahawk Motherboard

MSI today announced the X99A Tomahawk motherboard. This socket LGA2011v3 motherboard is based on the Intel X99 Express chipset, and supports Intel Core i7 "Broadwell-E" processors out of the box. The board draws power from a combination of 24-pin ATX and 8-pin EPS power connectors, and uses an 8-phase VRM to power the CPU. The board supports up to 128 GB of quad-channel DDR4 memory. Expansion slots include three PCI-Express 3.0 x16 slots, and two PCIe 3.0 x1.

Storage connectivity on the X99A Tomahawk includes one 32 Gb/s M.2 slot, one 32 Gb/s U.2 port, one 16 Gb/s SATA-Express, and eight SATA 6 Gb/s ports. USB connectivity includes two USB 3.1 ports (one each of type-A and type-C), eight USB 3.0 ports, and eight USB 2.0/1.1 ports. Network connectivity includes two gigabit Ethernet interfaces driven by Intel-made controllers.

EVGA Hardware Breaks 3DMark "Time Spy" World Records

EVGA and extreme overclocker Vince "K|NGP|N" Lucido have done it again, this time in the new DirectX 12 benchmark from Futuremark: "3DMark Time Spy". This new benchmark pushes the limits of modern PC gaming technology and can be used as a gauge for future game performance and visuals.

Armed with Liquid Nitrogen, an EVGA X99 FTW K motherboard, and an EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Classified overclocked to 2,594MHz, K|NGP|N was able to hit new performance heights. He was able to score 9,973 points, a new single card World Record. AMD Releases Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.7.3
