DDR4 Prices Increasing Over Smartphone Chip Demands

While DDR4 prices have seen a continuous decline in pricing since May 2015 and hit their lowest value at around June of the current year, that trend has recently seen a reversal, with prices currently accelerating upwards. That may seem strange, since DDR4 never carried that much of a price premium over DDR3 (mainly on the back of a contracting PC market, the increasing popularity of mobile computing and other devices using slower but lower-powered memory, and the consolidation of the memory manufacturing marketplace), but you don't have to look very much away from your own devices for an answer as to why this is happening: smartphones.

Since the latest generations of smartphones have mostly been using DDR4 memory (such as the Galaxy S7, Google Pixel, Xiaomi phones as well as many other manufacturers' handsets), demand for increased amounts of DDR4 RAM has put a strain on the manufacturers' capabilities, leading them to put desktop-level DDR4 production on one the back burner, prioritizing mobile versions of it. And as you well know, supply and demand usually go hand in hand with pricing, as you can see from the images below, taken from PC Part Picker's pricing trends:

Microsoft Announces the Surface Studio - A 28-Inch AIO With Skylake and GTX 980M

At the 2016 annual Microsoft Surface Event, Microsoft's corporate vice president for Surface Computing Panos Panay announced a new addition to the company's Surface lineup: a 28-inch All-in-One, with a 3:2 aspect ratio monitor Microsoft calls a "Pixel Sense Display", packing a 4500x3000 resolution (with around 62% more pixels than 4K resolution, combining to provide about 192 pixels per inch), as well as 10-point touch and Microsoft Pen support.

All of that screen real-estate comes in at just 12.5mm thick - the AIO's innards are actually on the monitor's base, with an hinge that promises to allow the display to be moved seamlessly and in a wide variety of angles, as well as allowing it to take on extra weight in studio mode. All of this is powered by an Intel Skylake processor (configurable as an i5 or i7 model), your choice of an NVIDIA GTX 965 M 2GB or an NVIDIA GTX 980 M 4 GB model, 8 through 32 GB of DDR4 RAM, and a 1 TB or 2TB storage - with all configurable options also including in their base specs what Microsoft calls a "Rapid Hybrid Drive", which at the moment, remains unclear as to its nature of either a SATA or PCIe SSD, or even an SSHD.

EVGA GTX 1070/1080 Overheating Issues - Company Says Thermal Pads A Solution

After users' reports (and Tom's testing) of EVGA FTW 1080 and 1070 cards displaying black screen issues, and sometimes even sparking and dying altogether, even at stock voltage, the company is now moving towards fixing the issue.

Apparently, the issue stems from the absence of any thermal pads over the VRM area of the FTW line of cards, which prompts higher operating temperatures. Some users were reporting heat transfer in such quantities that even the GDDR5X memory chips on the cards were being heated at 107 ºC, significantly over their rated operating temperatures of (0°C ≤ TC ≤ +95°C).

Seagate Introduces the 5th Gen FireCuda SSHDs - Up to 2 TB, 8Gb NAND

Seagate has officially updated their FireCuda line, the solid-state supported, high-capacity hybrid drives. The new, 5th Gen models sport a thinner form-factor (2.5"), rocking the company's multi-tier cache technology as well as 1 TB SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording) plates. The SMR plate's difference compared to conventional, perpendicular recording HDD technology allows these hybrid drives to increase storage density by up to 25%, by allowing newly-written magnetic tracks to partly overlap previously-written ones, reducing the amount of platter real-estate occupied.

The caveat with this technology is that the overlapping-tracks architecture may slow down the writing process, since writing to one track overwrites adjacent tracks, and requires them to be rewritten as well. However, according to Seagate, the large, multi-tier cache technology and large NAND caches are enough to offset any performance loss incurred by the SMR technology employed on these drives, and then some.

AMD Cuts Prices of the Radeon RX 470 and RX 460

AMD's domination in the sub-$200 market is rattled with NVIDIA's introduction of the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, and the GTX 1050. In addition to sending out media flyers pointing out what makes its GPUs better consumer choices than NVIDIA's, the company cut prices of two key SKUs - Radeon RX 470 4GB, and Radeon RX 460.

Pricing of the Radeon RX 470 4 GB is cut down to $159.99, from its $169.99 launch price. This puts the SKU just $20 above the GTX 1050 Ti. For $20 more you get double the memory bandwidth and higher performance, says AMD. Price of the Radeon RX 460 2 GB is cut down to $99.99, from $109.99, making it $10 cheaper than the GTX 1050 (non-Ti). The GeForce GTX 1050 series goes on sale from the 25th October, 2016.

AMD Wants You to Choose Radeon RX 470 Over the GTX 1050 Ti, For Now

Hot on the heels of NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 1050 Ti launch, AMD fired off an elaborate press-deck explaining why consumers should choose its $169 Radeon RX 470 graphics card over the $139 GeForce GTX 1050 Ti it announced last Tuesday (18/10), which is due for market launch a week later (25/10). The presentation begins explaining that the RX 470 is better equipped to offer above 60 fps on all of today's games at 1080p (Full HD) resolution, with anti-aliasing enabled.

Later down the presentation, AMD alleges that NVIDIA "Pascal" architecture lacks asynchronous compute feature. There are already games that take advantage of it. AMD also claims that its "Polaris" based GPUs RX 480, RX 470, and RX 460, will be faster than competing GTX 1060, GTX 1050 Ti, and GTX 750 Ti at "Battlefield 1" with its DirectX 12 renderer. The presentation ends with a refresher of the company's current product-stack, and how it measures up to NVIDIA's offerings across the competitive landscape. Turns out there is indeed a big price/performance gap between the RX 460 and RX 470, just waiting to be filled.

AMD Readying an Answer to GeForce GTX 1050 Ti

With the arrival of the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti and GTX 1050, the sub-$150 graphics card market is beginning to heat up. AMD is finding itself with a price-performance gorge between the Radeon RX 460 and the RX 470. Citing multiple sources, VideoCardz suspects that AMD is up to something - a new Polaris 10 "Ellesmere" based SKU positioned between the RX 460 and RX 470, referred to either as the "RX 465" or the "RX 470 SE."

The new SKU is further cut down from the Polaris 10 stack, in a bid to lower TDP below the 100W mark, to around 90W. The chip features 1,792 stream processors across 28 Graphics CoreNext compute units (CUs), out of the 36 CUs physically present on the chip. The RX 470 features 32 CUs, while the RX 480 maxes out all available CUs. AMD is leaving the memory bus untouched. It features 4 GB of GDDR5 memory across a 256-bit wide memory interface, ticking at 7.00 GHz (GDDR5-effective), churning up 224 GB/s of memory bandwidth - double that of the GTX 1050 series. There's also talk of yet another SKU, with 1,536 stream processors (24/36 CUs enabled), which AMD could position against the GTX 1050 (non-Ti).

AMD's Q3 2016 Earnings Call - Revenue is Up, Debt is Down

AMD today released their earnings call for 3Q 2016, giving us some interesting tidbits in regards to their financial robustness. The balance of AMD's economics seems to be pending towards better execution, and, coeteris paribus, a much better outlook for the coming quarters, after the monumental missteps in the past that almost threw AMD under the proverbial bus. Reception for the results seems to be a tangled mess, however, with some sides claiming that AMD beat expectations, while others prefer to draw attention to AMD's 2% stock decline since the report was outed.

AMD posted revenue of $1,307 million, up 27% sequentially and 23% year-over-year. This revenue was distributed unevenly through AMD's divisions, though. "Computing and Graphics" segment revenue was $472 million, up 9% from Q2 2016, primarily due to increased GPU sales (where Polaris picked up the grunt of the work, being responsible for 50% of AMD's GPU revenue), offset by lower sales of client desktop processors and chipsets; whereas "Enterprise, Embedded and Semi-Custom" segment revenue was $835 million, up 41% sequentially, primarily due to record semi-custom SoC sales (such as those found in Microsoft's XBOX One and Sony's PS4 and upcoming PS4 Pro).

NVIDIA Claws Back Console Chips Business: Nintendo Switch Announced

After months of speculation, the lid is off Nintendo's "NX" project, with the company finally announcing today its much-awaited games console, the Nintendo Switch. With an expected release slated for March 2017, the console blurs the line between a games console and a handheld device, by making use of a docking station which will allow it to connect to a television, much like a traditional games console, while instantly entering a so called "portable mode" when it is undocked. As both a console and a portable device, the Nintendo Switch will use cartridges known as Game Cards, displaying games in a "high definition display" embedded on the console while on the go, with two detachable Joy-Con controllers stepping in as input devices.

For PC hardware enthusiasts, that may not be all too interesting. What is arguably more interesting is that this games console will make use of NVIDIA hardware: most notably, a custom Tegra processor is the one pulling out all of the console's processing needs, with the graphics being served by what the company calls "the same architecture as the world's top-performing GeForce gaming graphics cards."

AMD Pushes for VR iCafes in China

Gaming iCafes are a popular phenomenon in markets such as China, and although it will take a while for VR headsets such as Oculus Rift and HTC Vive to become mainstream among consumers in such markets (owing to their steep prices), it's possible for iCafes to at least sell the experience of VR to the masses. Given the size of the Chinese market, engaging directly with iCafes presents companies like AMD with a big commercial opportunity.

According to a report by Taiwan-based industry observer DigiTimes, AMD is pushing for the concept of "VR iCafes" in China. This would be your everyday iCafe with special booths that have VR hardware (HMDs, controllers), letting people play VR content/games. The company is reportedly engaging with the vast industry of indigenous game developers, as well as the entertainment industry, to create games and content to serve in these iCafes. AMD is promoting VR through its LiquidVR technology, which among other things, cuts down effort by game developers to create VR content.

Closer to the Metal: Shader Intrinsic Functions

Shader intrinsic functions stand as a partial solution for granting developers more control over existing computational resources and how they are leveraged. This capability (much touted by AMD as a performance-enhancing feature on their GCN-based products) essentially exposes features and capabilities that exist on the hardware developers are programming for, but wouldn't generally be able to access. This can happen either because they're being abstracted by a high-level API (Application Programming Interface, like DX11), or because the API isn't functionally able to access them. To understand why high-level APIs such as DX11 don't usually offer support for a piece of hardware's full feature list, or full processing capabilities, we must first look at the basic architecture of a given computer system.

ASUS Bets on Domestic 10 Gbps Ethernet with Two New Consumer-Grade Products

With 802.11ac and WLAN standards getting faster by the day, wired Ethernet is going the way of the dinosaur, at least in case of home (domestic) markets. ASUS is betting against this trend, and believes that if marketed properly, there's scope for 10 Gbps Ethernet (802.3ae-2002) to dominate domestic markets such as high-end gaming networks and home-studios. To this effect, the company launched two new products styled for the home - the XG-U2008 switch, and the ROG-10G add-on 10 Gbps Ethernet card included with certain ROG motherboards, which could probably also be sold separately.

The XG-U2008 is an unmanaged or plug-n-play 10-port switch with two 10 GbE ports, and eight 1 GbE ports. In full-duplex mode, this works out to 20 Gbps per 10 GbE port; and 2 Gbps per 1 GbE port. This should let you plug-in NAS servers with 10 GbE to one of the ports, your desktop to the other, and a WLAN router or other desktops to the 1 GbE ports. The ROG-10G card, on the other hand, sits across a PCI-Express gen 2.0 x4 host interface, and features a Tehuti Networks TN9710-class single-port 10 GbE controller. Razer Reinforces Audio Business by Acquiring Majority of THX Assets

In a bid to reinforce its audio business, Razer has now acquired the majority of THX's assets. THX, which was founded in 1983 by George Lucas, has for the past thirty-three years focused on cinema audio systems, home audio systems, and audio certification. It is now to operate as an independent subsidiary of Razer, under its own management and the leeway to run its own operations and make its own business decisions. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, though Razer stressed that it intends to maintain all of THX's management and staff.

It is expected that this won't bring about major changes to THX's business model; their main focus points, namely Certification (testing and validation that a given system has passed a set of criteria determined by THX); THX Live! (focused in the audio experience unto itself, whether at cinema-like venues or at home); and THX Inside (focused on hardware's underlying technologies), are to continue operating within their given framework. That said, THX will now further expand their Certification programme to additional lines of products: headphones, Bluetooth speakers, streaming video, set-top boxes, and connected speakers, which are all, unsurprisingly, part of Razer's product portfolio.

Intel 8000p - The First Consumer-Grade 3D Xpoint Products

The Intel-Micron joint collaboration in the development of what is promised to be the next step in storage technology is inching ever closer to reality. According to Bench Life, which published a leaked specifications list for the upcoming Intel Optane Memory products, the first application for consumer-grade 3D XPoint technology straddles the line between an SSD and system RAM. Intel calls it a "System Accelerator" solution, and it's meant to operate as an intermediate caching solution between a system's RAM and storage. Codenamed "Stony Beach", Intel's 8000p (and entire 3D XPoint-based products) support is still up in the air, but it's expected that only Kaby Lake and subsequent platforms will be compatible with the technology - which, if true, is sure to limit the product's market penetration.

The consumer products will initially sport capacities of either 16GB or 32GB, leveraging the NVMe protocol at PCIe Gen 3.0 x2 bandwidth in the M.2 form-factor. Mirroring NAND technology, the greater capacity solution will sport the highest performance: with the 16GB part coming in at 1400 MB/s read and 300 MB/s write speeds, against the 32 GB's 1600 MB/s and 400 MB/s, respectively. We see similar results in regards to IOPS, with the 16GB solution offering up to 285,000 read and 70,000 write operations per second, against the 32 GB's solution respective 300,000 read and 120,000 write. As usual with new technologies, expect all these metrics to only go up in time.

Newegg Now Owned by Chinese Company

The Wall Street Journal's earlier report about an expected record-setting 2016 in regards to chinese investment in the United States was right. Newegg Inc., one of the most popular online tech-related retailers, is now reportedly owned by chinese company Hangzhao Liaison Interactive Information Technology Co., Ltd. (Liaison Interactive).

After September's reports of a significant investment from the Chinese company on Newegg, which would allow the California-based company to "accelerate the pursuit of the company's strategic initiatives" and into high-growth markets such as eSports, VR (Virtual Reality) and AR (Augmented Reality), it now appears that the investment was much more than a simple capital infusion: it was a bid towards controlling an effective majority in the American company's shares.

MSI Pulls Next-Gen CPU Support BIOS Updates, Working on Fix

As previously reported by TPU, in preparation for Intel's Kaby Lake architecture release, MSI published BIOS updates for its MSI 100 series chipset motherboards that (supposedly) guaranteed compatibility with Intel's upcoming platform. However, the new BIOS update seemingly disappeared from MSI's support webpages without any information as to why. According to ComputerBase, MSI representatives mentioned that an error was found in the code, and that a fix was currently being worked on. According to MSI, the fixed BIOSes should be made available shortly.

In any case, this scenario is better than the alternative of it having been users discovering the BIOS support to be defective. MSI did a good job in finding this ahead of Kaby Lake's launch and potential accompanying headaches from a not fully compatible CPU and motherboard combo.

AMD's RX 470 may see price-cut in wake of NVIDIA's GTX 1050 Ti Launch

According to TweakTown, AMD may be preparing to bring the fight to the as-of-yet unannounced GTX 1050 Ti with a $10 price-drop on their 1080p price-performance king RX 470 from the current $179, bringing the price down to $169. NVIDIA is purportedly planning to bring the GTX 1050 Ti to market at the $149 price point, with a rated TDP of only 75 W and apparently no need for additional power connectors (at least on reference designs). However, faced with a measly $20 difference from the supposedly higher-performing RX 470 - which could sometimes be up to 30% faster - the battle for the $150 bracket might prove to be an uphill battle for the green camp.

Add to that the latest updates unveiled by Oculus on Oculus Connect 3, with the RX 470 being stamped with the VR-ready approval, as well as the greater availability and lower price of FreeSync monitors (sometimes with as much as four times the number of FreeSync offers versus G-Sync ones), and it really does seem that AMD is poised to offer the best value in its price bracket. Of course, things get muddier if you take into account the current pricing landscape for graphics cards from either manufacturer (where most models are selling upwards of their MSRP).

AMD to Enter the Aerospace Industry with CoreAVI Avionics Technology

In what promises to be AMD's most ambitious (and lucrative) semi-custom hardware deal to date, the company partnered with CoreAVI, a leading manufacturer of commercial jet avionics, to develop high-performance cockpit display modules that perform on-the-fly terrain mapping. The company is designing special variants of its Radeon embedded GPUs and APUs (as in accelerated processing units, not auxiliary power); which drive high-resolution cockpit displays with reliable levels of performance.

The company is tapping into its most proven GPU IP and the ubiquitous x86 CPU architecture to drive PFD (primary flight display) modules. AMD hardware's surplus-to-requirement processing power comes in handy in accelerating terrain mapping software on-the-fly. On the software side of things, AMD is tapping into open industry standards such as OpenGL, custom-built for mission-critical (safety-critical) applications. AMD isn't new to the CoreAVI product stack. The company has been supplying extended temperature-range variants of its Radeon embedded GPUs to the company for some time now.

A video presentation follows.

HP Firmware Update Reverses Non-Original Ink Lock

With the cost of original printer ink sometimes being more expensive than equivalent amounts of rare metals - just consider that the average $35 ink cartridge holds between 10 to 20 milliliters of liquid - it isn't uncommon for users to resort to non-original alternatives, which sometimes cost less than half of their counterparts.

After last September's rollout of a firmware update that effectively impeded the use of non-original ink cartridges on their Officejet line of printers - to considerable user outcry - HP has now issued another firmware update which effectively reverses the previously imposed lock. Ironically, while the firmware update that imposed the lock was automatically installed on user's systems, the same isn't the case with this reversal, with users having to download and install the appropriate firmware by themselves.

In a blog post entitled "Dedicated to the best printing experience", the company goes on to say that it reserves itself the right to use security features which "protect our IP including authentication methods that may prevent some third-party supplies from working."

Industry Leaders Join Forces to Promote New High-Performance Interconnect

A group of leading technology companies today announced the Gen-Z Consortium, an industry alliance working to create and commercialize a new scalable computing interconnect and protocol. This flexible, high-performance memory semantic fabric provides a peer-to-peer interconnect that easily accesses large volumes of data while lowering costs and avoiding today's bottlenecks. The alliance members include AMD, ARM, Cavium Inc., Cray, Dell EMC, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), Huawei, IBM, IDT, Lenovo, Mellanox Technologies, Micron, Microsemi, Red Hat, Samsung, Seagate, SK hynix, Western Digital Corporation, and Xilinx.

Modern computer systems have been built around the assumption that storage is slow, persistent and reliable, while data in memory is fast but volatile. As new storage class memory technologies emerge that drive the convergence of storage and memory attributes, the programmatic and architectural assumptions that have worked in the past are no longer optimal. The challenges associated with explosive data growth, real-time application demands, the emergence of low latency storage class memory, and demand for rack scale resource pools require a new approach to data access.

Thanks to AMD's incorporation of an ARM-based "AMD Secure Processor" in their upcoming ZEN micro-architecture, the company is poised to offer something competitor Intel's microprocessors yet don't: memory encryption. This processor, and its underlying technologies, could prove to be a stepping-stone for AMD towards regaining lost server market share. Essentially, because in a market ever more steered by cloud computing considerations, it allows for the client's data to be encrypted at every moment of the work chain. Assuming all works as intended, for the first time not even cloud providers, with either hypervisor-level privileges or even physical access to the servers, will be able to carry out any malicious actions against their clients.

One only has to consider the writing on the wall: Morgan Stanley predicts that by 2018, 30% of Microsoft's revenue will stem from its cloud services; Amazon Web Services (AWS) generated $7.88B in revenue on Q4 2015, up 69% over 2014; and worldwide spending on public cloud services by itself will grow from $70B in 2015 to an estimated $141B in 2019. Cloud computing is here to stay, and with security being as important as it is for some businesses, this is an important area of investment for AMD. This "AMD Secure Processor" will work on essentially two fronts: SME (Secure Memory Encryption) and SEV (Secure Encrypted Virtualization), backed by an hardware-based SHA (Secure Hash Algorithm).

Worldwide PC Shipments Declined 5.7 Percent in Q3-2016: Gartner

Worldwide PC shipments totaled 68.9 million units in the third quarter of 2016, a 5.7 percent decline from the third quarter of 2015, according to preliminary results by Gartner, Inc. This was the eighth consecutive quarter of PC shipment decline, the longest duration of decline in the history of the PC industry. PC manufacturers faced many challenges, which included weak back-to-school demand, and ongoing low demand in the consumer market, especially in emerging markets.

"There are two fundamental issues that have impacted PC market results: the extension of the lifetime of the PC caused by the excess of consumer devices, and weak PC consumer demand in emerging markets," said Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner. "According to our 2016 personal technology survey, the majority of consumers own, and use, at least three different types of devices in mature markets. Among these devices, the PC is not a high priority device for the majority of consumers, so they do not feel the need to upgrade their PCs as often as they used to. Some may never decide to upgrade to a PC again.

Thermaltake Intros its Sandia-inspired Engine 27 1U Low-Profile CPU Cooler

Remember the Sandia CPU cooler concept from 2011 which never really saw the light of the day? Thermaltake drew a few design cues, and launched the Engine 27, a low-profile CPU cooler with the heatsink-impeller design. As with Sandia, the Engine 27's design involves a metal heatsink base that makes contact with the CPU, which conveys heat to a motorized fan-shaped moving heatsink suspended along an axle and conductive lubricant. The rotation of this moving heatsink dissipates heat. To give Thermaltake credit where due, the company took the concept a notch above and gave the base-plate a static aluminium channel heatsink of its own, so the exhaust from the heatsink-impeller takes in some additional heat on its way out.

The Thermaltake Engine 27 derives its name from its 27 mm height (meets 1U spec), and probably the fact that it looks like the core of a jet engine. The company is still claiming pretty benign noise output figures of 13-25 dBA, depending on its speed range of 1500-2500 RPM (pretty neat for a 60 mm fan). Measuring 27 mm x 91.5 mm x 91.5 mm (HxWxD), the cooler weighs about 310 g, and supports LGA115x sockets (LGA1156/LGA1155/LGA1151/LGA1150). The fan supports 4-pin PWM power input. The company didn't reveal pricing.

Two ASRock Z270 Motherboard Packages Smile for the Camera

Ahead of their Q1-2017 launch alongside the 7th generation Core "Kaby Lake" processors, the boxes of two premium ASRock motherboards based on the upcoming Z270 Express chipset smiled for the camera. These are the ASRock Z270 Gaming K6, and the Z270 Pro4, or at least that's the best we could read through the blur. The Z270 Gaming K6 could be a premium offering, while the Z270 Pro4 could be an entry-mainstream one.

Just as Intel launched both the 6-series and 7-series chipset for the LGA1155 socket, and the 8-series and 9-series chipset for the LGA1150 socket; the Z270 could be Intel's second platform for the LGA1151 socket, in being compatible with both the upcoming 7th generation Core "Kaby Lake" processors, and the existing 6th generation Core "Skylake" ones. Existing 100-series chipset motherboards will support "Kaby Lake" chips with BIOS updates.

Alphacool Unveils the Eisbrecher Radiator Series

With the Eisbrecher, Alphacool is introducing a new generation of radiators. The Eisbrecher radiators were designed specifically for silent operation and perform especially well when paired with slow-revolving fans. This makes the Eisbrecher ideal for anyone looking to build a quiet system.

The radiator core is made completely of copper, as usual for Alphacool, and the outer parts are made of aluminium. Both sides of the radiator have a honeycomb grille, under which lies the radiator's truly innovative technology. The A.B.M., or air breaker mat, ensures even distribution of fresh air to the radiator. On normal radiators, the spaces underneath the fan hub and in the corners are dead spots with barely any air circulation. The A.B.M. works like a fan shroud and breaks up the incoming air so it circulates to every area. Because of the more even distribution of air, especially with slow-revolving fans, performance is greatly increased.

NVIDIA GP107 GPU Built on Samsung 14 nm Node?

Could the upcoming "GP107" ASIC by NVIDIA be its first on the 14 nanometer silicon fabrication process? That's what uncovered. Informed sources tell the German tech-site that the GP107 could be the first GPU built by NVIDIA's partnership with Samsung Electronics, after it emerged that the Korean silicon giant could manufacture certain GeForce "Pascal" GPUs on its 14 nm LPP (low-power plus) node.
