AMD-ATI Merger Looks Likely

It sounds nonsense, but here's what Forbes has to say about possible AMD-ATI Corp. Advanced Micro Devices may be looking to buy graphics company ATI Technologies, a move that would benefit the overall graphics industry, according to RBC Capital Markets.
The synergies of this seem consistent with the recent announcements by AMD to significantly increase capacity over the next few-years...We believe ATI is a rare-buy in the semiconductor space right now given the near-term tie-up dynamics.
wrote analyst Apjit Walia.
However, this AMD-ATI tie-up would obviously be a clear-positive for the graphics space.

Pirate Bay Taken down

In the morning of 2006-05-31 the Swedish National Criminal Police showed a search warrant to Rix|Port80 personnell. The warrant was valid for all datacentres of Rix|Port80 and was directed at The Pirate Bay. The allegation was breach of copy-right law, alternatively assisting breach of copy-right law.

The police officers were allowed access to the racks where the TPB servers and other servers are hosted. All servers in the racks were clearly marked as to which sites run on each. The police took down all servers in the racks, including the non-commercial site Piratbyrån, the mission of which is to defend the rights of TPB via public debate.

According to police officers simultaneously questioning the president of Rix|Port80, the purpose of the search warrant is to take down TPB in order to secure evidence of the allegations mentioned above.

The necessity for securing technical evidence for the existance of a web-service which is fully official, the legality of which has been under public debate for years and whose principals are public persons giving regular press interviews, could not be explained. Asked for other reasoning behind the choice to take down a site, without knowing wether it is illegal or not, the officers explained that this is normal.

The TPB can receive compensation from the Swedish state in case that the upcoming legal processes show that TPB is indeed legal.

AMD 5000+ and FX62 support socket 939

AMD will release Athlon 5000+ and FX 62 in socket 939 flavours. This is great news for many socket 939 supporters as we believed that 4800+ and FX 60 will be the last stop for you all.
AMD certainly hasn't made a big song and dance about it, but it clearly says on its website that it will support socket 939 with its new CPUs.

Microprocessor History

Taking a step back in time this article recaps the evolution of the processor that is the heart of the PC (or Mac) that lets you view this page. This article relives the early days, it even walks you back up to the modern days. It's important to learn the beginnings to know and appreciate what we have now.

Pre-Overlocked Graphics Cards May Have Problems

"Pre-Overlocked Graphics Cards May Have Problems," Surprising isn't it? Many Enthusiasts haven't quite known how to take to pre-overclocked video cards. According to the [H]ard|OCP web-site the failure rate of pre-overclocked GeForce 7900 graphics cards, shipped by BFG Technology, EVGA and XFX, is higher than the non-pre-overclocked graphics cards.
Kyle BennettWell today NVIDIA officially got back to me with an answer to all my inquiries on the subject. The short of it is: the GPUs on the cards that were having problems didn't have the headroom necessary for the vendor's overclocked specifications. The two most prominent problem areas were the vertex clock (which remember runs 50 MHz faster than the pixel clock) and the memory clock. These GPU subsystems were running far enough out of spec that the chips were having physical issues with stability; causing the random "freezes" we were seeing.
[H]ard|OCP summarizes the different paths taking to resolve this issue by the companies BFG Technology, XFX, and EVGA. It is interesting the way each company is handling the problem. Perhaps this will have some influence on your future graphic card purchases.

NVIDIA Quadro vs. ATI FireGL

I have not seen a roundup/review like this in quite some time. X-bit labs is putting the ATI FireGL series against the NVIDIA QUADRO series of professional graphics accelerators. X-bit labs has provided a relatively in depth 18 page review of these professional graphics accelerators. If your interested in keeping up with all aspects of present day hardware this is a great read. It also outlines the fine line between Gaming and Professional Design workloads.

Conroe XE not supercharged

INTEL decides to play it safe by only clocking the Conroe XE to 2.93 GHz as opposed to the suspected 3.33GHz. Further allowing headroom for future clock bumps to leapfrog the next AMD high end release if needed.
TheINQIntel looks to be doing what Nvidia and ATI keep doing to each other, waiting for one side to pick a number and then beating it by just enough to claim victory. This ups margins and makes for a more profitable part, or a cheaper part if it is feeling altruistic.

Intel set the bar where it wanted it to be, and it does indeed look to be "enough".

Semprons perform better on 754 than on AM2

The folks over at HKEPC have compared a AM2 Sempron 3000+ with it's 754 counterpart of the same rating. It looks like AM2 is taking a step backwards in it's new Sempron line-up. While the AM2 has more cache, it runs 200Mhz slower. The AM2 Sempron gets dominated in the majority of the benchmarks performed.

AMD's plan to overcome Conroe

With Conroe crushing all current AMD processors in benchmarks, it isn't looking good for AMD. But AMD may have a few tricks left up their sleeves. They may release an uberclocked FX chip and/or a Quad core AM2 processor. The FX chip would be a cherry picked dual core. Personally, I'm guessing that it would be clocked at around 3.2Ghz, if AMD wants to put up a real fight. AMD's other option is to go quad core. There are a few issues with this, and there a few ways AMD could attempt to manage them. AMD's obvious option will be to simply slap two dual core processors on one die, and have one slave off of the other. AMD's second option will be to run each dual core half on its own HT connection, basically a dual processor system with one processor socket. This would theoretically better, but latency issues could be an issue.

Earthlink plans free wireless for New Orleans

The service will cover the Downtown New Orleans, and will run at a humble 300kbps. This service will be free as long as the city is still recovering from Huricane Katrina. If you wish for a faster connection, you will be able to pay for a 1Mbps signal. The system may be in place as early as September. It will cost about 3.5 million, and will cover 15 square miles.

Black Frog: Blue Frog reborn

As many of you will remember, Blue Security went under just a few weeks ago. The company offered a powerful antispam service called Blue Frog, and when it began to take a toll on spammers' networks, a russian spammer launched a massive DoS attack on their servers, overwhelming them with a gigantic botnet. Now, by a community effort, an open source sucessor is being created. The program will be called Black Frog, and will be based on a P2P network dubbed "the frognet." Because it will use many servers, bringing down even a group of them will have little effect on the network's functionality. The locations of the servers will be known only to employees as well, so orchestrating a sucessful DoS attack on all of the servers would be extremely difficult.
Okopipi works by submitting opt-outs to the merchant sites associated with spam. The network creates opt-out scripts on the behalf of all members that reported the spam. Okopipi will also act as a proxy, submitting the opt-outs for each user.

It is important to understand that Okopipi is NOT a Denial of Service (DOS) network. The network is designed to specifically PREVENT overloading merchant servers. It's purpose is simply to empower users to complain about the spam that they receive.

Apple working on new eMac

Apple is working on a new eMac. These machines are meant for schools and budget users. They will most likely feature Intel CPUs as well. Probably a Core Solo with integrated graphics. Gone is the CRT monitor, replaced by a LCD. If such a device is being worked on, expect it to hit around September, as that is when school starts.

Mod chip for the PSP

There has been a steady fight between Sony and PSP users wanting to run home brew software or unprotected media (movies instead of UMD disks) on their Playstation Portable. But it seems that there will be a mod chip, called the Undiluted Platinum (UP). This mod will act as a flash replacement system for the PSP which allow the use of previous flash updates or custom flash builds. Installation has been optimized to fit entirely inside PSP, this opens up the possibility to run unsigned home brew code on the latest PSP systems. More information on price and availability should follow soon.

Dell to fix 2007WFP with firmware

All of you having "banding" issues when your new Dell monitors may be glad to read the following:
We do have a fix in place. Dell has a firmware update that adjusts the ACC (Adaptive Color and Contrast) & ACM (Active Color Management) features, eliminating the banding issue when using the Desktop mode. All of these monitors have three display modes: Desktop, Multimedia and Gaming. The firmware turns off Faroudja video processing in Desktop mode. It remains enabled in the other two modes.
The firm may be releasing this for the 2007WFP. No mention of the 2007FP or 2407WFP have been made and the release date is still unknown. If you would like more information check the posting at the Dell forum here for contact information.

Windows Vista to ship with enhanced version of Internet Explorer

Microsoft wants to make Vista special in many ways and maybe lure people to upgrade their Windows XP machines. The included version of Internet Explorer 7, creatively called IE 7+ will include additional features such as protected mode, parental controls and an improved network diagnostics engine. These features are included in Vista and will not be part of any Internet Explorer released for older operating systems.

Conroe overclocked to 4.60GHz

Conroe E6700 CPU runs a default clock of 2.66GHz and was almost overclocked an entire 2 GHz. The user Coolar who reported doing this, ran his E6700 at 460MHz FSB on a MSI 975X MB 7246. He used Corsair PC6400 to get this rather large Overclock. Details were vague on what type of cooling mechanism he used.

Another user called Iterations made a nice prediction curve of SuperPI times.

Western Digital Updates Raptor Series

Western Digital silently updated two of its first Raptor series drives: the 36GB WD360ADFD and 74GB WD740ADFD 10,000RPM models. Both hard drives now have 16MB buffer size, Native Command Queuing, increased 'Buffer To Disk' transfer rates of 84MB/sec up from the previous models' 72MB/sec as well as lower overall average seek times. The updated 36GB and 74GB Raptor models are also 3 dBA quieter in the idle state. However, both drives still carry a SATA 150 MB/s interface. These updated models are not available yet, but retailers should start to sell them within the next few days.

GeForce 7950GX2 preliminary benchmarks

So NVIDIA is getting ready to launch the GeForce 7950GX2, which will start selling on June 6th and will most likely cost around $599-649 Dollars at launch. The X1900XTX and 7900GTX currently cost around $480 Dollars. Below is a NVIDIA slide illustrating the performance difference between a 7900GTX and the 7950GX2:

Edit by W1zzard: Please note that due to creative marketing the graph does not start at 0. The 7950 GX2 uses two GPUs, two PCB, two everything - one PCI-E connector.

Nintendo Wii to cost less than $250

It seems that the Nintendo Wii is getting more expensive all the time. When the rumours about a price started, it was said to cost around $150, then once it was officially announced the Wii was to cost around $200 and now the price has been set: under $250 for the US and no more than ¥25,000 ($220/£119/€174) in Japan.

ATI R600 to reach 1000MHz

While grapic chips these days top out at 700MHz on the 90nm process, ATI is working hard on the 65nm R600. Rumour has it, that the part will run at 1000MHz or more. So I guess we cannot expect the GPUs to get any cheaper or use less power these days. It is interesting to note that manufacturers move to a smaller manufacturing process and have to go for the fastest possible speed at that level. I do not think that we will see parts much faster than 1GHz.

Intel Finally Unveils 65nm Intel Xeon Chips.

Intel Corp., the world's leading supplier of x86 processors for servers, on Wednesday quietly released its new chips for dual-processor server machines. The new processors dubbed Xeon 5000-series contain two processing engines and made using 65nm process technology. The new chips, however, will not gain significant popularity on the market, according to earlier reports.

Without releasing any official statements, Intel added specifications of five new Intel Xeon processors for 2-way servers and workstations to the list of dual-core Xeon chips' specs. The central processing units, which were earlier code-named Dempsey, support Intel virtualization technology, Intel Hyper-Threading technology, 64-bit capability and non-execute bit support.

Currently Intel offers Intel Xeon DP processor models 5030, 5050, 5060, 5063 and 5080, which operate at 2.67GHz, 3.00GHz, 3.20GHz, 3.20GHz and 3.73GHz, respectively. The new Xeon processors feature 4MB L2 cache (2MB cache per core), 667MHz (models 5050 and 5030 only) or 1066MHz processor system bus and use LGA771 form-factor. The models 5080 and 5060 have thermal design power of 130W, whereas the rest consume about 95W, according to the manufacturer. Along with the new processors, Intel releases its new server and workstation platforms code-named Bensley and Glidewell.

The new Bensley platform is based on Intel 5000P (Blackford) and Intel 5000V (Blackford VS) chipsets that support dual-core processors, PC2-4300 FB-DIMM memory, PCI Express bus, Intel's Hyper-Threading, virtualization, active management and I/O acceleration technologies. The Intel 5000P is positioned to support chips that have 667MHz or 1066MHz processor system bus, whereas the Intel 5000V is positioned to work with processors that feature 667MHz bus.

The Glidewell platform features the Intel 5000X (Greencreek) chipset that, in addition to the capabilities mentioned above, brings support for PCI Express x16 bus required for graphics cards.

Vista delayed again?

Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer said the launch of operating system Windows Vista could slip back even further.

Vista was originally due for release in late 2002 or 2003, under the Longhorn name. It was then delayed until Christmas 2005, another deadline that slipped past. In March this year, Microsoft said the software would not be ready until January 2007.

And today Ballmer said this date may move again: "Certainly, when Windows Vista comes to the market next year, and it will be next year, we will make sure that we make a high quality product, ship a high quality product, when it's ready.".

Having missed the Christmas target, Microsoft is in discussions with computer manufacturers about the best time to ship the software.

Ballmer said: "What we are discussing ... with hardware partners is when they would really like it - early January, late January, February. We are on track for shipping early in the year,"

MS advises users to play safe with Word

Attacks targeting an unpatched vulnerability in Microsoft Word 2002 and 2003 have prompted Microsoft to tell users they should run the application in "safe mode".

The workaround does not address the underlying vulnerability, but running Word in safe mode will thwart current attacks based on the vulnerability, Microsoft advises.

Redmond is testing a more complete fix, which is scheduled for delivery on 13 June. To run Word in safe mode users need to disable the Outlook feature that invokes Word as a mail editor before restarting their machine and appending /safe to the WINWORD.EXE command line.

Nokia sued by Qualcomm

Qualcomm has taken legal action in the UK against Nokia, claiming it has infringed two of its patents.
The action, in the High Court in London, seeks an injunction against Nokia and damages related to the number of phones sold which use the patents.

The patents relate to GSM, GPRS and EDGE products made by Nokia, and is, said Qualcomm, an extension of a case filed in the US last November.

Qualcomm claims that although some Nokia phones can work with GPRS and EDGE, they don't work with CDMA technology.

Acer Blu-ray, HD-DVD notebooks on the way

Acer Computer, who is one of the globe's biggest producers of personal computers, may shortly intro its laptops with either Blu-ray or HD DVD disk drives, providing users a choice and not taking sides, like some other computer makers.

A news-story by DigiTimes web-site claims that Acer plans to introduce notebooks that feature built-in Blu-ray Disc (BD) optical disc drives (ODDs) and HD-DVD drives at Computex 2006 show in Taipei, Taiwan, which kicks off on the 6th of June, 2006.

Acer did not comment as to whether notebooks featuring BD or HD-DVD drives will be featured at its booth, according to the web-site, however, it is known that Acer was going to intro a multimedia notebook featuring HD DVD drive (see this story for details). Being agnostic to the formats and taking no sides, Acer may support both competing next-generation DVD formats.

NVIDIA delays GeForce 7950 GX2 with now QuadSLI at launch

NVIDIA has pushed the release of the GeForce 7950 GX2 back a week to the 6th of June. The big kicker is the following statement from NVIDIA:
On MAY 30 NVIDIA will launch GeForce 7950 GX2. This product will be the fastest single card video card solution available. At launch, only single GeForce 7950GX2 configurations will be supported. QUAD SLI systems will continue to ship with 2x 7900 GX2. Schedule for 2x 7950 GX2 QUAD SLI will be updated on MAY 30. Sample product on 7950GX2 will be shipping today. EVGA, BFG, and XFX all have stock of 7950 GX2 and will hard launch.
Everyone wanting to use QuadSLI needs to get their hands on the old and long 7900 GX2s, instead of the new and short 7950GX2. There have been a lot of problems with the QuadSLI setups and NVIDIA seems to be working on a fix, but until then no QuadSLI with your brand spanking new 7950GX2 at launch.

Dell to open retail stores

Apple opened their big one last week and Dell does not want to be left behind. They will open two stores: in NorthPark Center (Dallas, Texas) in the summer and in Palisades Center (West Nyack, New York) in fall. Both should be around 3000 square feet. The big difference between theirs and Apple is that "shoppers" will not be able to buy products in the store. They can only order them online at location.

ICT free HD-DVD & Blu Ray movies until 2010

ICT stands for Image Constrain Token, which lets the user watch a high definition movie (either HD-DVD or Blu Ray) only if a protected path (for example: HDMI) is used. If an analog source or display is used, that movie would be downgraded in resolution. Seems like the Studios have agreed to hold off the implementation of ICT. So owners of the Xbox 360, small PS3 and HD-ready Television sets without HDMI can breath a sigh of relieve for the next four years. But keep in mind this is not an official move by the studios. I for one am happy to be able to use my Dell 2405FPW for HD content for the next four years - hopefully.

LG releases 8GB music player

The player is suppose to give Apple a run for its money. While the iPod is very easy to remember, LG decided to name their player MFJM53. It comes with a 1.77 inch 262k color, touch-sensitive OLED screen, so there are no controls on the outside. This may be reason enough for some of us to loose some weight since our chubby fingers may not hit every button correctly. The player supports WMA (with and without DRM), MP3, WAV and OGG. Watching MPEG 4 AVI files is possible as well. The player can be had in black or white (wonder where they got that idea from?), is weights 88g and measures 10.1 x 4.8 x 1.4cm. No word on actual availability or pricing.

ATI moving to DDR4

ATI's R580+ is to use the same 90 nanometer marchitecture as the current generation, but ATI will be making modifications to it, allowing it to utilize DDR4. Allegedly ATI's, R520, 10k Generation will be moving to DDR4, but a few modifications need to be made to accommodate this change. The launch dates of the next two big cards R600 and G80 is still unknown, but if NVIDIA pulls a fast one on ATI, ATI may be in for some trouble only having a R580+ ready and not a R600 up against the G80. The R600 is expected to launch near the end of 2006.

Microsofts says Open Source is "Not Reliable or Dependable"

Jonathan Murray from Microsoft has claimed that open source is not reliable or dependable, and if you want stability, commercial software is the way to go. "Some people wanted to get value out of sharing with other people in the community, others wanted reliability and the dependability", says Murray. In other words, open source is for people who want to be involved in the community of open source software.

Rockstar Games closes Vienna office

So it seems that Rockstar has closed their Vienna offices, leaving around 100 employees out in the cold, when they came to work. The Vienna offices were responsible for porting games from the PC to the XBox. Some of those games were Max Payne, Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, as well as the console versions of Max Payne 2. Rockstar made this public last week, with the statement: "Employees will be offered packages in accordance with Austrian law, as well as other job opportunities within Take-Two and Rockstar Games where possible."

Four AM2 CPUs for Eastern Europe . . . Ouch!

For some reason AMD has only prepared four CPUs for sales in Eastern Europe upon launch of AM2. And so far no explanation has been made by AMD representatives to defend this questionable move. Also the AM2 launch is rapidly approaching, only two days to go!
TheINQA hundred or so journos will share only four processors. The FX-62s are intended for print media, while online hacks will get 5000+ CPUs. . . Remember, AMD will launch Socket AM2 platform on Tuesday, with all models, but the top and most reviewed CPUs will be a 2.8 GHz clocked FX-62 with 2x1MB of L2 cache and 2.6 GHz, 2x512KB of L2 cache clocked at 5000+.

Peek into the Future of NVIDIA Forceware Drivers

The Forceware 90 drivers feature an entire new control panel with NTune integrated. The new Forceware 90 drivers will still allow you to use the classic NVIDIA control panel if you please, but it offers many new options, that seem to simplify things. The new control panel allows you to do things like conrolling system voltages from within windows. It also features a fan Speed controller, a system temperature monitoring program, and it has a built in stress test. Both the fan speed controller and temperature monitoring go further then the graphics cards alone, they extend out to other parts of your system.

See the Source for more screenshots of the new Forceware Control Panel.

Intel Core Duo T2600 processor Significantly beats FX-60

Over at X-bit labs they overclocked a mobile Socket 479, 2.16GHz, 2MB L2 T2600 Core Duo Processor to 3.0 GHz. They put it up against some tough opponents the AMD FX-60 being one of them. The overclocking is normal, but the results are quite surprising. The overclocked T2600 beats the FX-60 in 3DMark06, 3DMark 06 CPU, PC Mark, SYSmark 2004 SE, and a some other benchmarks. But the processor has a trade off, while being powerful for things like gaming is quite weak in video encoding. Maybe Intel is back? Or maybe their just on to something good.

Symantec sues Microsoft

It must be linked to the time of year, because Symantec is sueing Microsoft for misappropriating intellectual property and breach of contract over a licensing deal with Veritas, which Symantec bought last year. They want to block the sale of Windows Vista until everything is sorted out. Symantec says that Veritas storage management software, licensed by Microsoft, has been used in the development of a number of Windows products, including Vista.

New GeForce 7800s on the way?

NGOHQ managed to take a look at the Forceware 84.56a drivers. They stumbled over a very interesting bit. Seems like there is a new card listed which goes under the name "GeForce 7800SE/XT/LE/LT/ZT". Could it be that NVIDIA is going to revive the G70 and squeeze a few last sales out of it or is this entry just a remnant of something planned, that never happened?

Apple sues Creative

So Creative decided to sue Apple over patents it held. Turns out Apple sued Creative the very same day. Apple sues for four patents it owns. No mention on which four exactly, but they all are digital music player patents. SO it is a save guess that they target the Creative Zen Player. So grab yourself some popcorn and enjoy the fight.

Dell and AMD: Official

Dell has announced that at long last, AMD's Opterons chips will be finding their places in the Texas-based company's server line. The press release came out earlier today, and after a bit of trouble with their website this afternoon, the press release is back up for all to see. The PR details that the chips will be used in multi processor units by the end of this year, but does not give any more information as to the future of AMD's products in Dell's computers.
In the enterprise, we will launch new ninth generation servers featuring Intel's Woodcrest microprocessors. Dell will also introduce new AMD Opteron processors in our multi-processor servers by the end of the year offering a great new technology to our customers at the high-end of our server line.
PR here.

Microsoft Announces Windows Vista Hardware Requirements

Microsoft today announced the official Windows Vista hardware requirements. If you want to run Windows Vista you'll need at least: 800MHz CPU , 512 MB of system memory, a graphics processor that is DirectX 9 capable, and 15 GB HDD free space. If you plan to use the Windows Aero user interface you'll have to own at least:
  • 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor.
  • 1 GB of system memory.
  • A graphics processor that runs Windows Aero.
  • 128 MB of graphics memory.
  • 40 GB of hard drive capacity with 15 GB free space.
  • DVD-ROM Drive.
  • Audio output capability.
  • Internet access capability.

Woodcrest looks much better than planned

INTEL HAS (HAD?) a big secret for the Woodcrest - better than expected power. For a long time, Intel has claimed it was an 80W part. Wow, an 80W TDP is great right? Yeah, it is, or it was. The new cores were pulled in to the third week of June because the latest stepping came in better than expected.
What I mean by better is almost bug free, runs faster than expected, and takes less power. The bug-free bit enabled a pull-in of the launch dates, if you don't need another stepping, you don't need another stepping. Faster is a little less obvious, I am told you basically need two steppings, side by side to see the difference and, even then, don't look for big numbers.

The last part, less power, is the big one. I am told Woodcrest will be coming in with a 65W TDP. This is big news, and by no means a minor drop, it is on the order of 20%, and will most likely send AMD scrambling. Whatever magic Intel pulled off, well done.

Every Intel CPU from 4004 to P4 up for grabs on eBay

With Intel gearing up to cease manufacturing its 386, 486, 960 and other processors of yore, one eBayer is offering technology enthusiasts the chance to own almost the entire collection of the chip giant's microprocessor products.

Well, not all of 'em - some are still sitting in folks' PCs, after all - but rather one of each type, many of them highly esoteric but "historically significant", in the words of the seller, who claims to have spent eight years putting the collection together. The selection runs from the original 4004 through to the Pentium 4.

The array is described as a "museum grade, quality collection". According to the seller, "the chips have been chemically cleaned for the absolute best possible cosmetic appearance while being displayed. This collection would make a fantastic educational tool for a university or technical school."

The whole collection can be bought for $2500, plus shipping. Ebay link here.

Optimus mini three delayed and more expensive

Seems like the little device has not only been delayed until August 15th, but will cost more than anticipated. While early birds were able to preorder the device for $100 US dollars up until now, Optimus has raised the pre-order price to $120 US Dollars. The unit may even cost up to $160, when it goes on sale. So pre-order yours while you can!

Tinnos presents Windows Mobile 5.0 PDA with 30GB HDD

The portable unit, called the blufin - LX430, sports a huge 4.3 inch screen, and comes loaded with Windows Mobile 5.0. Instead of using flash memory, the PDA uses a 30GB 1.8 inch hard drive to get the job done. The battery will power the unit for 4 hours if watching video or 10 hours for audio. It will run on AMD's Alchemy Au1200 processor at either 333, 400, or 500MHz, will have 128MB DDR2 memory and possibly sport an SDIO slot as well. The unit will be on sale in Japan in June.

DMB by iRIVER, the Pocket TV B10

The Pocket TV B10 will be a tiny gadget which sports a 2.2" QVGA screen and can play digital TV, DMB and FM radio. Users looking for PMP funktions have to look elsewhere. The B10 does not play anything else. The unit will be on sale in Korea starting on May 23rd with a price tag of around $140 US Dollars.

Intel Core Duo price drop ahead

Intel will be cutting prices on May 28th to counter AMDs lower Turion X2 prices. The 2.16 GHz T2600 goes from $637 to $423, the 2.0 GHz T2500 will drop from $423 to $294 and the 1.83 GHz T2400 will sell for $241 instead of $294. The $241 1.66 GHz T2300 will be replaced by a $209 T2300E, which will have the same specifications but lacks support for Intel's Virtualization Technology. The Core Solo T1300 running at 1.66 GHz will be axed and replaced by the T1400 running at 1.86 GHz.

Geforce 7950 GX2 to be sold as a single card

NVIDIA wants to put some pressure on ATI and will be selling the GX2 cards as single cards, so you will not need to buy a pair. The card will cost around $600 US Dollars or the just that in Euros. This makes the card rather cheap, as it will certainly outperform a single 7900GTX or X1900XTX which do not cost much less. The question remains if this would be a smart buy, as Vista and DirectX 10 are not too far off. Could this be the start of a price

The card has a rather large heatpipe cooler, and comes with blue PCB. The card has the usual 8 pipelines, 256MB DDR2 memory and 128bit memory bus.

PhysX card sales slow

One of the biggest UK etailers - Overclockers - is selling around 10 cards a day. While that may be a good for completely new tech, things like graphic cards are generally sold out within days of a launch. This is turning out to be something of a waiting game (all the pun intended). Everyone is waiting for the games to come out, until they will buy the card. Unreal Tournament 2007 should be the big hit, and will certainly help sales. I for one am waiting until that game hits, to make up my mind.

ATI RD580 supports AM2

So ATI seems to have hit two birds with one stone, because their good old RD580 chipset currently used for Socket 939 boards, will be compatible with AM2. ATI probably did not have to change much as the memory controller, in this case for DDR2, resides on the CPU. The RD580 may be named differently for the new socket, but should be paired with the SB600 southbridge.

New Found Efficiency in AM2

AMD is showing off new levels efficiency in its newest socket. AMD claims 37 per cent better performance a watt of the new AM2 processors than their socket 939 counterparts. AMD Also claims that Athlon 64 X2 dual core desktop chips will give 154 per cent better performance a watt than its older variant. Dual core chips may only use a relatively low count of 14 watts.

AMD Also released launch prices.

XBox 360 hack for the masses

So the hack which lets you play backup copies of xbox 360 and original Xbox games. This currently only works on "TS-H943" Xbox 360s. The instructions on how to apply the patch can be found in the Xbox360.net forums. There is no download link there, but if you look hard enough, you can find it thru other means.

Dell XPS 700 to cost $10000 - again

Well the limited edition XPS 600 Renegate cost $10000 dollars and the followup model, the XPS 700 with the new aluminum case design will cost just as much it seems. The PC will come with Quad SLI (2xGeforce 7950 GX2) and a Conroe CPU. All that will be running on an nForce 500 series mainboard. Some other components include a X-Fi sound card, a PhysX card and WD Raptor hard drive.

Creative sues Apple

So last year, Creative was granted a patent for a method that automatically organises digital music collections into categories (can you say "software patent"?). Apple has been using such a feature for a while, so Creative is finally letting their lawyers loose on Apple trying to stop it selling the iPod in the United States, and seeking damages from the firm for "willful infringement of the Zen patent".

Skype offering free PC to land-line calls in US and Canada

Skype is massivly promoting their PC to land-line calling service. The feature usually costs the caller money, but Skype wants to penetrate the market more and get people used to VoIP phone calls. The calls to any US or Canadian based land-line number will be free until the end of the year. So if you have not used skype until now, better get to it, as it may save you a lot of money. On the other hand, there is a saying: "Habits die hard" and that is exacly what Skype wants. Get used to calling now and you will be more likely to pay up next year.

Corsair Announces Immediate Adoption of Enhanced Performance Profiles (EPP)

Corsair Memory Inc., the worldwide leader in design and manufacture of high performance memory, today announced immediate adoption of Enhanced Performance Profiles (EPP). Jointly developed by Corsair and NVIDIA as a new open memory standard, Enhanced Performance Profiles elevate memory performance by taking full advantage of the additional memory parameters that are now added to the unused portion of the JEDEC standard Serial Presence Detect (SPD). As a new open standard, immediate adoption by motherboard manufacturers and other memory manufacturers is expected.
Corsair is excited to be the first one to introduce memory modules based on EPP. We believe this feature adds overclocking convenience and performance advantages to all users,
said John Beekley, VP of Applications Engineering at Corsair Memory. To take full advantage of the Enhanced Performance Profiles, motheboards designed with a special BIOS can recognize the presence of EPP settings. Once these settings are enabled, the system boots directly into the memory's specified settings and takes immediate advantage of the increased performance. The first product from Corsair with the new
Enhanced Performance Profiles will be the SLI-certified TWIN2X2048-6400C4 and TWIN2X2048-8500C5. Click on the source page to read the full story.

Sony VAIO UX Ultra-Portable Computer

Well first off, Sony has a teaser right here. This device comes with a 7-inch screen, Intel Core Solo processor, fingerprint reader, Motion Eye web camera, sliding keyboard, flash-based hard drive, Bluetooth, Wireless 802.11b/g and WWAN (wide area network). The Sony website mentiones the 16th of May as a release date, but here are a few pics up front:

Rumors about new Geforce 7 cards - 7600GTX

So we know about the 7900GS and 7300GT already. Then there will be a 7600LE as well. Nothing too surprising here. But here is the kicker: a 7600GTX may be coming out in the near future. Something to fill the gab between the 7600GT and the 7900 series. If I may risk a guess here: a 16 pipeline card with up to 512MB memory. This could get very interesting as two 16 pipeline cards could do better than one 7900GTX with 24 pipelines. But do not forget, this is all 100% unofficial!

Sony to ship 17in Blu-ray Vaio next month?

Sony's first Vaio notebook to ship with a Blu-ray Disc optical drive could hit the UK by the middle of June, it has emerged. A variety of European resellers are already beginning to list the product. Some are even starting to advertise the 17in machine.

Dubbed the VGN-AR11S, the machine is believed to contain a dual-core 2GHz Intel Core Duo T2500 processor, 1GB of SDRAM (probably 667MHz), 200GB of hard drive storage (some say twin 100GB hard drives, others that it's a single unit), an Nvidia GeForce Go 7600 GT graphics chip with 256MB of dedicated graphics RAM, integrated webcam, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a TV tuner and the aforementioned BD drive.

It's said the Vaio will ship with Windows XP Media Center Edition. The machine measures 41.6 x 30 x 3.4cm and weighs 3.8kg.

The bulk is matched by the hefty price: the prices we've seen suggest consumers should expect to pay between £1,850 and £1,999 ($3,506-3,788) for the AR11S. Buyers on a budget could look out for the cheaper AR11M and AR11B models, but these seem unlikely to feature the BD drive.

Biostar releases two 7300GT variants

Biostar is not known for offering any special or overclocked graphic cards, but it seems they are trying hard to change that image. They announced the ΣGate (that stands for Sigma Gate) V7303GT21, which is a souped up 7300GT running a 500MHz core and with 1000MHz on the memory. The card also features a copper heatpipe cooler. Certainly nothing reference about that. Then there is the passively cooled ΣGate V7302GT21, a 7300GT as well, running at 400MHz for the Core and 700MHz for the memory. This card has no active cooling and sports a custom heatpipe cooler as well. Just for reference, a normal 7300GT is set at 350MHz for the core and 667MHz for the memory. Both cards come with 256MB and are SLI -ready. Biostar also includes an overclocking utility to push the limits of each card.

7900GTX price war starting

Everyone in the UK should be happy to hear that the different manufacturers are entering a price war on 7900GTXs. The Club3D variant now only costs £299.63. This is the first time a 7900GTX costs less than 300 UK Pounds.

Leadtek Winfast 7950 GX2 picture

We all know that the card will work at 500MHz on the core and 1200MHz on the memory. The price of the Winfast card should be somewhere between 700€-750€, and should be available shortly. You may notice that there seems to be no SLI connector, which is not quite true, but you only need one SLI bridge to connect two if these cards. The connector is in the middle on the card with the PCIe connector.

Xbox 360 cracked

Even though the hack is very complex, and should not be done by you and me, but the crack will let you play back-ups of your Xbox 1 and Xbox 360 games, and will boot all normal xbox games, yes all, not just the onces on the compatibilty list. So we are one step closer.

Dell jumps the gun with the Geforce 7900GS

Seems like Dell has quietly added the option of configuring your Dell XPS 600 with Geforce 7900GS 256MB cards. The unanounced parts will have 20 pipelines, and should sell around $250. NVIDIA is expected to launch the card within the next few days, if not today.

Hitachi announces 160GB perpendicular mobile hard drive

Hitachi's debut PMR hard drive is the Travelstar 5K160, a 5400 rpm 2.5" drive with a capacity of 160 GB. The 5K160 integrates two platters with a capacity of 80 GB each, resulting in a storage density of 131 Gb/inch², which is slightly less than what Seagate claims for its 160 GB Momentus 5400.3 2.5" drive (133 Gb/inch²). Operating shock resistance is rated at 325 Gs; non-operating shock at 1000Gs. The drive will cost around $270 if purchased in larger quantities. The Seagate variant sells for slighly less - $250.

AMD 65nm Processors Roadmap

AMD will start supplying 65nm CPUs in December 2006, first for the OEM market. Japanese overclocker sets 3 new world records with 3.4 GHz Merom

Kyosen, a world famous overclocker from the land of the rising sun, has done it again. Using a Merom Core Duo chip, 2GBs of Supertalent DDR2, and a X1900 Crosfire setup, Kyosen has broken the previous world records in 3D mark 01, 05, and Aquamark 3. The CPU was clocked a little over 3.4 GHz. The CPU was cooled with dry ice, and the videocards were on water. His 3Dmark 01 score was 62,398 points, the 3Dmark 05 score was 20,672, and the new Aquamark3 record is 180,329. In addition to this, he has achieved a 14.734s 1m superpi score. While not a world record, it certainly is amazing.

Here is his thread on XS. The most recent scores are posted on page 6.

Duke Nukem almost done

By now, almost every gamer has heard about Duke Nukem Forever, a title that was herald as the next great first person shooter. The game was suppose to be released back in the 90's and was suppose to be the hot successor to Duke Nukem 3D -- a game that became a classic in its own right. DNF arguably had a lot to live up to. Duke 3D had become a pop culture icon, with the protagonist throwing out memorable lines during a fire fight and the game itself delivering a unique style of game play.

It's now eight years later and with an investment of nearly $8M USD, DNF is still not finished -- but it's almost done, says Scott Miller, CEO of 3D Realms. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Miller explains that his company focuses on original IP, or intellectual property. This is to say that 3D Realms develops only original game ideas and game content. The company does not take ideas out of movies, or any other type of source to develop their games. When asked by THR if a game should take as long as DNF took to complete, Miller responded "It shouldn't. And I'm dumbfounded myself. A huge part of the problem is that it's really hard hiring good developers to come to Dallas. This place used to be a hotbed of game development. But, nowadays, people seem to want to go to Austin instead. Plus we have this reputation now -- that our games don't ever come out, so ... "

Microsoft, Nintendo team up against Sony?

Microsoft Corp.'s vice president in an interview during the Electronic Entertainment Exhibition (E3) criticized Sony Corp. for $599 price-tag on the PlayStation 3 and expressed opinion that consumers would prefer to get an Xbox 360 and a Wii, rather than a PlayStation 3.

"Tell me why you would buy a $600 PS3?" Peter Moore, Microsoft Xbox division vice president, is reported to have said, according to Reuters news-agency. "People are going to buy two (machines). They're going to buy an Xbox and they're going to buy a Wii for the price of one PS3".

"People will always gravitate toward a competitively priced product - like what I believe Wii will be - with innovative new designs and great intellectual property like Mario, Zelda and Metroid," Mr. Moore is reported to have said.

It is unclear whether Microsoft is going to co-work with Nintendo in a bid to replace Sony from the top of the game console world, however, denouncing the main rival amid praising another seems to be rather uncertain in terms of future plans.

Microsoft "Find a bug"

To help incent its own employees to file and fix bugs in Windows Vista, the Microsoft brass is implementing a bounty program, according to one employee. The Windows team will pay employees $100 for each bug file and fixed. And the employee with the most bugs filed and fixed will earn an extra $500.

Nintendo’s Wii Will Cost Less Than $200

Nintendo's Wii game console, which launch is scheduled adjacent to Sony's PlayStation 3, may become the most affordable gaming machine in years, as its pricing will be around $200, according to an executive of Sega, one of the main game publishers for Nintendo's game consoles.

Scott Steinberg, vice president of marketing for Sega, said in an interview with Forbes that Nintendo's Wii would cost less than $200, mainly because it does not feature state-of-the-art "heavy-duty" processors like those in PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360. Forbes further reported that Merrill Lynch analyst Justin Post predicted Thursday that the new machine, which will be released this fall, would sell for $200, a move that could prompt software publishers to create more titles for the gaming system.

Nintendo Wii console will feature IBM's custom PowerPC architecture based microprocessor named Broadway clocked at 729MHz and code-named Hollywood chip with built-in graphics core, DSP and I/O features from ATI that will operate at 243MHz, earlier reports suggested. Nintendo revolution will use 91MB of memory in total: 23MB of "main" 1T-SRAM, 64MB of "external" 1T-SRAM and 3MB texture buffer on the GPU. Nintendo's Wii does not feature a hard disk drive, instead, it boasts with 512MB of flash memory, but the console will also have a card reader, which will allow installing more memory.

Panasonic’s Blu-Ray Drive for Desktops to Cost $900

Panasonic, one of the world's leading consumer electronics companies, is set to ship its Blu-ray disc optical drives for desktop personal computer to its home market in Japan in about a month from now. But while the second Blu-ray disc burner on the market is going to be more affordable than the first one from Pioneer, it will still have a price-tage not suitable for mainstream buyer.

A report over Japanese web-site PC Watch claims that Panasonic's recently unveiled LF-MB121JD will cost approximately ¥100 thousand, which is about $900. This is more affordable than $995 price-point of Pioneer's BRD-101A, however, this price level is not enough cost-effective for general users, something, which is crucially important for Blu-ray standard to get popular.

Panasonic's LF-MB121JD, complied with Blu-ray disc association's BD-R, BD-RE and BD-ROM standards, can read and write single-layer 25 GB and single-sided, dual-layer 50 GB BDs. Supporting the three generations of optical discs, the 41.3mm high internal BD drive is compatible with 11 different writable CD and DVD optical discs and 13 different readable optical disc formats, according to the company.

Micronas introduces dual-tuner DVB-T ExpressCard 54 reference design for notebook PCs

Freiburg, Germany, May 10, 2006 - Micronas (SWX Swiss Exchange: MASN), a leading supplier of innovative application-specific IC system solutions for consumer electronics, today announced the launch of MicMamba 2D-XC, a dual-tuner DVB-T ExpressCard 54 reference design for notebook computers. MicMamba 2D-XC has two independent tuners on a single card. This allows notebook users to watch one program while recording another, delivering full PVR functionality in the user's notebook computer. The notebook can now double as a portable TV or full media center. The dual-tuner design offers a second advantage - the card can combine the signals from both tuners to increase signal quality while moving, or in marginal-reception areas. This capability, commonly called "antenna diversity", is based on the patented 'Maximum Ratio Combining' technology, licensed from Rohde and Schwarz.

Slim LG T1 Express Dual notebook

The new dual core notebook from LG sports a 14 16:10 display and is a mere 0.83 inches thick. It still has all the power you may need under the hood: Core Duo T2300, up to 4GB of memory, dual-layer DVD burner, fingerprint sensor, a display with either 1280x800 or 1440x900 pixels, a 6 or 9-cell battery and the Intel GMA950 graphics. The notebook weighs 4.3 pounds with all that hardware inside. Price and availability is unknown at the moment.

Motorola ships iTunes phone in the UK

The phone, called V3im, is basically a V3i with 128MB internal memory and iTunes software. The device can take microSD cards, up to 512MB, but is limited to 100 Songs, no matter how much space you have available. The V3im is a quad-band (850/900/1800/1900MHz) GSM/GPRS phone with Bluetooth 1.2 on board. It's got a 1.23 megapixel camera with 8x zoom and a 176 x 220, 262,144-colour main display. It weighs 100g and measures 9.8 x 5.3 x 1.4cm. It will set you back £265 if you get SIM-free version.

White PSP to ship in the UK next week

The PSP will be sold in the form of the Value pack, which bundles headphones, a case, an AC adaptor and a 32MB MemoryStick with the PSP and should cost just as much as the black Value Pack - £180. Amazon.co.uk has the release pinned on May 15th, thus Sony may announce the new part on the same day.

Google and Nokia working on mobile device

Google has teamed up with Nokia to make a mobile device that will communicate over existing wifi networks. It will be tightly integrated with GMail, and will allow you to tell if your contacts are online, if they are using Google Talk. It should cost around $400 a unit. The mobile device will be more like a PDA with some unique features than a cell phone.

NVIDIA Tritium will Overclock for you

NVIDIA is going to be releasing a certification called "Tritium, for motherboards, videocards, and complete systems that meet up to specific requirements. Tritium compatible motherboards will have to have the option to adjust these voltages:

CPU (AMD AM2 Socket)
- V_Core: 0.775V to 2.2V
Memory
- VDDIO: 1.8V to 2.5V
- VTT: 0.9V to 1.25V
C51XE
- V_Core: 1.2V to 1.45V
- V_PEX: 1.5V to 1.7V
- V_HT: 1.2V to 1.5V
MCP55XE
- V_Core: 1.5V to 1.7V
- V_PEX: 1.5V to 1.7V
- V_HT: 1.2V to 1.5V

The motherboards will also have to meet these specific requirements:

- CPU memory interface: DDR2 interface running at 800MHz
- CPU C51XE 16 x 16 HyperTransport interface: 1.5GHz
- C51XE x16 PCI Express link: 150MHz
- C51XE/MCP55XE 16 x 16 HyperTransport interface: 1.5GHz
- MCP55XE x16 PCI Express link: 150MHz reference clock

Tritium is planned to be released soon after AM2 is launched. The neat thing about Tritium is that motherboard manufacturers will start to integrate Tritium features into their bios. If you have Tritium compatible parts, the system will overclock for you. You will still be able to tweak it yourself, however. Video card bios will also have special "Tritium Compatible" bios that overclock on their own.

Google Notebook is coming

No, it isn't a laptop. Google Notebook will be a software program that will record your searches, learn how you search and what your looking for, and then use that to give you more accurate searches.

Alienware SLI Notebooks not ready

NVIDIA has postponed Mobile SLI and you won't be able to get your SLI notebook until the 20th of June. You can order them now from Alienware, but when you add Mobile SLI to your laptop, you'll see a warning that it "May delay your order". No matter what, you won't get your Mobile SLI laptop until June 20th.

7900 GTX/GT Price Cuts

Even if the performance is similar with todays high end ATI and NVIDIA cards, it looks like NVIDIA will win through lower prices. In the UK, you can get a 7900 GT for £164.95, and a 7900 GTX for £259.95. You can find them here, at overclockers.co.uk. Nvidia isn't the only one slashing prices, the X1900 series is also seeing large price drops. You can get an X1900 XT for £239.95, and an X1900 XTX for 269.95. You can pick some up here, again from overclockers.co.uk.

Titan Quest

Many gamers still dream about a Diablo III. Some still favor the Diablo series regardless of it's linear game play and limited graphics. Diablo was a great game during the periods of its release, but now we have something new. The instant I started playing this game it hit me like a brick wall at 50 miles per hour, this game feels just like Diablo. This game seems to have much more to offer, the best way I can suggest finding out more is giving the demo a try. This may be the closest to a Diablo III we may ever get.

Wind your clocks back to November 2000

An Interesting article was posted on DNA-Drivers and I feel that it should definitely be shared with the hardware community. Some of us have not even been in the hardware community during the release of some of the architectures that are discussed here.
V-ZeroWind your clocks back to November 2000 - A month and year that would eventually spell disaster for Intel, they could never have seen it coming. They introduced their brand new non Pentium Pro/P6 based Netburst architechture, and like schoolkids to a pool of candy, we lapped it up. They had critics, sure the Willamette had it's problems. Socket 423 wasn't really a great platform, the processors ran slightly warm and worst of all they lagged behind their P-III bretheren in tasks that their higher clock speeds should have dismantled. But we accepted that, we allowed them this slip-up... A new architechture, after all, has to be fine tuned. As the clockspeeds ramped, and platforms improved over the years, people became happier. Still though, there was a nagging problem. The cheaper Athlon XPs from AMD were taking many benchmarks from Intel, and only better bandwidth could fix this. So, after a fair wait we got Northwood "C", with an 800mhz quad-pumped FSB, and all was once again right with the world - or was it? Sure the Athlon XP had been defeated, and about time too - (that architechture was so old that, in truth, it lasted way beyond its years - it should have been dissolved two years prior to its final defeat at the hands of the Northwoods...), but AMD had another architechture waiting in the wings, and it had a buzz about it.

Quad-Core Chips Market Conquer Will Be Slow

Even though Intel is very bullish with revenue shipments of quad-core processors in late 2006 and their introduction in early 2007 for both servers and desktops, the company's mainstream product line will still utilize dual-core processors. Apparently, the mobile and desktop chips that should come in early 2008 will have two processing engines.
Penryn and Wolfdale processors will be manufacturered using 45nm process technology and are supposed to arrive sometime in early 2008. The Penryn and Wolfdale both are aimed at the mainstream market. They will be close relatives of the Merom and Conroe. It looks like the death of single core CPU may be only a few years away, but death of dual core will not be so soon. Intel also announced that it will do micro-architectural shifts every two years now opposed to every five.

Death of Gameboy

Since Nintendo DS has been so successful, it is time to slowly end the long life of Gameboy. Many still remember those huge gameboys back from the early 90's. Gameboys first appeared in 1989. It is the longest lasting game system ever released.
(Nintendo President Satoru Iwata said)I would have a second thought about using our resources on what would be the next generation of Game Boy Advance, considering the strong support DS is now enjoying," Iwata said. "The Japanese game market is now evolving around DS. We don't need to do something that will pour cold water on the situation.

Sony plans 8GB Walkman

So we call it MP3 player, but because its Sony we call it Walkman. The current model of the Walkman, the NW-A1000 has a 6GB capacity, and can be had for around 169€s if you look hard enough. The new NW-A1200 will ship in mid-June and will come with SonicStage CP jukebox.

Apple's big release day next Tuesday

So we mentioned that Apple would release the new MacBook this Tuesday. That day has passed and nothing has happend. Now it is being rumoured that it is suppose to happen *next* Tuesday. Not only will there be the release of the MacBook, but possibly even new iPod models, and even red MacBook Pros and iPods. Why red? Well Bono from U2 has a charity called "Product Red Charity" to raise awareness about the AIDS problem in Africa. So we may see a red product or two from Apple.

ATI is behind once again in the multi card industry, but it may have Quad Crossfire ready by the end of this summer. They can already put 2 X1600 GPU's on one PCB, so it may not be that difficult for them to set up a four GPU, dual card setup.

NVIDIA Forceware 90 to support SLI PhyX

According to VR-Zone NVIDIA will be introducing the new driver in July that will allow you (as I understand) to decapitate one of your beloved SLI graphic cards and turn it into a partial PhyX processor.
VR-ZoneWe heard that the upcoming Forceware 90 series will support NVIDIA SLI PhyX and it will be available in July onwards when the games are ready for it.
I am unsure of the validity of this, but it does seem likely due to the fact that it was only a few months ago when The Inquirer stated that NVIDIA was formulating a PhyX solution. An article relating to NVIDIA's PhyX announcement can be found here at The Inquirer.

New Method in Online Child Protection

Securus Internet security has released a new software program that filters out obscene websites in a new way - instead of checking images, it checks for certain text on the screen, and if it finds one of those words on the screen, it saves a screenshot. Parents can later look at the screenshot, and see what thier kids have been up to.

Security patch for Quake 3 Arena based games

Quake III Arena, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory have 2 security vunerabilities. One deals with running a server and having a malicious client download from the server while autodownload is enabled. The second deals with a buffer overflow that could allow a malicious server to run shellcode on the connecting client.

The patch is actually just a new executable file that should replace your existing one. Downloads for all three games for Linux, Windows, and Mac available at Id Software's frontpage (can't give direct links because of Id's anti-leech system).

Is the X1800GTO worth Unlocking?

VR-Zone does a standard review on an X1800 GTO, but unlocking it brings some interesting yields. The X1800 GTO has 12 pipelines, but the VR-Zone Reviewer force flashed the X1800 GTO to 16 pipeslines using the X1800 XL Saphire Bios. Unfortunately the flash brings an substantial decrease in overclocking ability for the X1800 GTO. On the upside the bios flash without any overclocking brings an 8% performance boost even with a 20MHz slower core speed.

Power Color X1900 GT launched; Retail price dropped to $300

ATI and TUL, the makers of Powercolor videocards, launched their X1900GT today, 4 days early. They had planned to release the card on the first day of E3, but seem to have decided they could not wait any longer and opted for today. The card has also had its suggested retail dropped $50 from $349 to $299, presumably to compete with the 7900GT. The card uses the R580 core, running at 575MHz with 256 Megabytes of GDDR3 running at 1200MHz. It has eight vertex shaders and 36 pixel shaders as well as support for AVIVO and Crossfire. The card sports only 12 pixel pipes, but may be able to unlock to 16, since it uses an R580 core.

Microsoft announces HD-DVD addon for Xbox 360

Now it is official, Microsoft will be releasing an external HD-DVD drive for the Xbox 360. They statement even went into the question of pricing and mentioned that the drive will be made affordable, but did not reveal how much the drive would cost. Another interesting point is copy protection, as it will go thru the Xbox 360, there is no HDMI output, does that mean no HDMI based HD television is needed to show HD content? Sony mentioned once that they would possibly offer Blue Ray drives and players without copy protection. Time will tell.

Microsoft to announce hybrid HDD for Vista

Microsoft and Samsung will be showing off, and officially announcing, the new hybrid hard drives during the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference on May 24 in Seattle. The hard drive will be a ready-to-market variant, meaning it will not be a prototype. Microsoft will also introduce the software to support the drive, called ReadyDrive, which will also be a part of Windows Vista. The plan is to release hybrid HDD based notebooks with the Windows Vista launch at the end of this year.

Dell Fixes Its 3007WFP 30 Inch LCD

Over a year ago, Apple unleashed its flagship 30-inch Cinema Display, the largest LCD panel it had ever launched. A year later, Dell launched its own 30-inch display, the 3007WFP. With its new display, Dell also introduced a much sleeker and more refined form for its LCD display. Dell's 3007WFP was $400 cheaper than Apple's display and was technically superior to Apple's 30-inch Cinema Display. Dell's 3007WFP however, was noted to suffer from a bad case of backlight uniformity. According to many 3007WFP reviews, 40% of the right side of the display was significantly brighter than the left side of the screen. Now Dell has a new revision of its 3007WFP, called A01. The severe hotspots that were noticeable on A00 units are now gone with the A01 unit.
  • 3007WFP A00 - Backlight uniformity problem
  • 3007WFP A01 - Backlight uniformity excellent

MSI Announces AM2 Socket K9 Motherboards

MSI introduced five different configurations of its latest motherboards for AMD Socket AM2 CPUs. All the MSI K9 Series are equipped with passive CPU and north bridge cooler. The MSI K9N SLI Platinum is based on NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI MCP chipset with SLI support, FireWire and 6xSATAII ports with Raid 5 support. MSI is also introducing a version with the same specifications for more price-sensitive market: MSI K9N SLI. MSI K9N SLI is not equipped with FireWire, 4xSATAII and do not support Raid 5. The MSI K9N Platinum is a NVIDIA nForce 570 MCP chipset board without SLI support. It features 8-channel High Definition Audio, 6xSATAII ports, 10xUSB 2.0 and 2xIEEE1394. The cheaper version: MSI K9N Ultra does not support FireWire and Raid 5. The MSI K9N Neo works with NVIDIA nForce 550 chipset which also can't work with Raid 5 arrays. MSI is going to extend the product line to 9 different configurations by the middle of the May.

DisplayPort details

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) has lifted the veil around the final version of DisplayPort. It will not only include video signals, but HD audio as well. In addition, it will support higher resolutions and refresh rates than DVI, so no more dual link DVI needed. The DisplayPort 1.0 specification supports a single, uni-directional four-lane link capable of shunting data at a rate of 10.8Gbps, enough for one uncompressed video stream and associated audio. It supports 8-bit and 10-bit colour. Alongside this Main Link is a bi-directional 1Mbps Auxilliary Channel for device control. There is a slimline version of the connector, for the use with slimline notebooks, and it can sport a 128bit AES encryption, if needed.

ATI sued over "HDCP ready" claims

Well this had to happen earlier than later. ATI has now been sued by Stanley Batsalkin and Kenny Vargas on behalf of themselves and others in a San Jose district court. ATI sold their cards as "HDCP ready" or "HDCP compliant", while this was not the case, since ATI and its manufacturers never build any cards with the HDCP chip on the PCB until recently. The only card so far that has HDCP support is the X1600 series from a few manufacturers. The high-end line of GPUs still does not sport the needed chip.

Samsung Admits to Plagiarizing Designs from Apple and Microsoft

Seems like Samsung was a bit lazy in the design departement and used Microsoft and Apple logos and Icons for their mobile phones in South Korea. Samsung has fixed their "mistake" and the handhelds sold now, have different icons. While Samsung admits their mistake, many other firms use graphics found on the web on their packaging. This is the case with many graphic card manufacturers.

Intel Core 2 Duo details

The new label "Core 2 Duo" is for the Conroe. The first to launch will be the Core 2 Extreme, while the normal Core 2 Duo will follow shortly after that. The new CPU will ship in July.

Intel's Quad Core Tukwila

Real World Technologies has official confirmation that Intels quad core is to be named Tukwila. The new Tukwila has an on die FB-DIMM memory controller that allows lower access latency. Reports say that each core features 6mb L3 Cache which totals 24MB Cache per MPU. This totals 3MB less then its predecessor Montecito with 27MB Cache on two processors. It's operating frequency is estimated to be about 2.5 GHz.

"The videogame industry is in a funk"

The video gaming industry is again expected to suffer a decline in sales. According To the Wall Street Journal online, the industry had a 3% decline in sales last year, and a 5% decline in sales is expected for this year. It is believed that consumer anticipation of the next generation console launch from Sony and Nintendo is the primary cause for this lower percentage of sales. The Wall Street Journal said that analysts believe the sales will resume a steady increase in 2007.

ATI 80nm parts delayed

ATIs shift to 80nm from the now standard 90nm will not happen as soon as was planned. Computex was the marking point for the shift, but it seems that ATI will do so a bit later, sometime in September at the earliest. So this will be a quiet Summer for high-end parts, while the mainstream still has some interesting parts to offer.

Intel to cut XScale group

Many of us have PDAs with XScale processors. My MDA compact is running at 400Mhz. But the ARM part is not doing so well, so Intel will be laying off engineers from that group. Could this be the beginning of the end of XScale? The current high-end part is the 624Mhz processor, and considering that Intel is pushing forward with UMPCs, it does not bode well for XScale.

Internet Ineptitude

In a day and age when the mainstream media stands accused of spinning reality every bit as much as the citizen journalist, where lawyer's threatening emails fly to suppress the opinions of the public daily. The new line between the professional and the amateur is often the moral backbone to stand up and fight for their rights. Such is the case of Lance Dutson who has accused the Maine Office of Tourism and their advertising agency of Internet Ineptitude. The result is a litany of harassment, a 3 count multi-million dollar federal lawsuit, and the first Media Bloggers Association alert.

F.E.A.R. makes its way to the Xbox 360

Vivendi has officially announced the porting of F.E.A.R. to the Xbox 360 console. The game is being ported by Day 1 Studios, and will include new single and multiplayer content. The game is scheduled for a fall 2006 release. Hopefully the developers will take advantage of the new Xbox's resources to recreate the kind of visual experience F.E.A.R. provided on a high end PC.

Apple threatens SA over thread on overheating Macbooks

Apple's lawyers have dispatched a cheery little letter explaining that Something Awful could find themselves in a heap of trouble very soon if they do not remove the link to Apple's Macbook Service manual in the recent thread about overheating Macbooks, as the material is under copyright. Apparently Apple is quite angry about the publicity the embarrassing photos within have received, and has threatened to lean on SA's ISP if the material is not removed, regardless of the fact that the content in question is not actually hosted by SA.

Incidentally, a great number of other sites have linked to the contained instructional picture of thermal grease application, including Techpowerup!, but only SA has received a request to remove the picture and link. The thread in question can be found here, with Apple's legal notice on the fifth page.

Nintendo DS Lite launch details

Some of you may be waiting for the Nintendo DS Lite. The new portable console will be launched in North America on Sunday the 11th of June and will cost $129 US Dollars. The only color available at launch will be "polar white", while other colors will most certainly follow. The major upgrade to the original DS is the screen, which is brighter on its lowest of the four available settings, than on the original console. Besides that, the Lite has become much smaller, and the placement of the buttons has been changed slightly.

ECS to release H70 Tablet UMPC soon

So everyone is joining the frey of UMPC, while Samsung and TabletKiosk are already shipping units in some form, ECS has just gotten the FCC approval for their UMPC, calld H70. It will come in two variants, one with a 900Mhz Celeron M, 256MB, 30GB or the bigger counterpart with a 1GH ULV Pentium M, 512MB, 60GB. Both units will sport a 7-inch WVGA TFT display at 800x480 resolution, a 3-in-1 flash reader, a 1.3 megapixel camera, high-definition 7.1 channel audio with built-in speaker and mic, 802.11b/g WLAN and Bluetooth capabilities. ECS is planning to market the UMPC as a tablet PC instead of an Origami device.

TabletKiosk ships first UMPC in the US

Seems like a firm by the name of TabletKiosk is the first out of the trenches with their UMPC called eo. The device has a price tag of $899 US Dollars if you get the bare minimum, or over $2000 if you want all the bells and whistles. It should be noted that an upgrade to a 100GB 7200RPM HDD adds $500 US Dollars to the price, while the upgrade from 256MB to 1GB hits your wallet with $265 US Dollars. So you might want to crack the unit open yourself to put in more memory or a bigger hard drive. The base unit comes with a 7" TFT-LCD Touch Screen, VIA C7M NaNo 1.0 GHz, 30GB, 256MB, build-in 802.11 b/g and Bluetooth. It weighs 1.98 pounds and should give your 2.5 hours of battery life.

Feature Films

It's surprising how many folks are unaware of the Feature Film section of the Internet Archive. It plays host to films of yesteryear that are in the public domain, and while many are just this side of the corniest B movies ever made, there are quite a few cult classics and landmark movies as well. Some with A list actors, from silent classics with Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, to Humphrey Bogart, Gary Cooper, Cary Grant and the Three Stooges. Looking through the recent additions today I spotted Captain Kidd with Charles Laughton and John Carradine. Now where did I put the popcorn?

Apple recalls MacBook Pro batteries

If you own a MacBook Pro and your battery has a serial number earlier than W8608 you should contact Apple to get a replacement. Any batteries with the serial number above W8609 are not affected. The batteries have the following behavior:
-Going from a full charge to 90% capacity and then immediately losing power
-Losing significant capacity
-The battery meter LED blinks at 1 block or doesn't respond
Apple did not mention how many of these faulty batteries are being used and need to be replaced.

Free Xbox Live Gold Week

All of you, who have the Xbox 360 can enjoy a full week of Xbox Live Gold for free. Starting on the 8th of May and ending on the 15th of May. This notice came from Xbox Europe, but may be true for all the Xbox 360 owners around the globe as well. If you have not gotten a Xbox 360, might as well grab one now and get hooked on Xbox Live Gold right from the start. Microsoft is doing the same thing as Valve, offer free days or weeks of play, in the hopes that some will buy the game or service afterwards

You Snooze You Loose

Pity the poor unfortunate multinational multimedia juggernauts who slumbered while the world changed around them. The U.S. Department of Justice, The N.Y. State attorney general and the federal district court of California are all investigating the big four for price fixing and anti-competitive practices surrounding online music sales. The latest ruling likely being why the record labels have caved into Apple. And renewed their license agreements for a flat rate.

Malware Genetics

And so it was that Gobot5 begat GhostbotA who was a nasty blighter and begat Downloader Delf and IRCBot-16 who was a very bad boy and begat Partie-B and Funlove, which where in fact no fun at all. And so it goes according to Halvar Flake the founder of Saber Security, who has been reverse engineering malware in an effort to develop a more rational and less confusing naming system for the little nasties.

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion rating bumped from "Teen" to "Mature"

The highly anticipated fourth Elder Scrolls game has had its rating raised a level, to the surprise of many. Bethesda's new hit game now carries a "Mature" rating due to "more detailed depictions of blood and gore than were considered in the original rating", as well as the presence of topless character models, unlockable with 3rd party software. Similar to the "Hot Coffee" fiasco, a company has again come under fire for content inaccesible in the course of regular gameplay. Bethesda has yet to respond to any inquiry, but has taken steps to alert retailers of the new rating,, providing "M" rating stickers for units already marked "Teen". The two ESRB press releases can be found below.

SiN Episodes: Emergence playable May 10th

So I have pre-purchased and pre-loaded SiN Episodes. I have been eager to play the game, as the original SiN was quite fun, when it first came out. Seems that Valve quietly posted the news about the release back on April 27th. So anyone else waiting to play the game, it will be playable on May 10th at 10:00 am PST.

AMD quad-core roadmap

Want to know when your dual-core CPU will become obselete? Not to worry, it will not happen any time soon. The roadmap shown on HKEPC seems to point at a release in the second half of 2007 for 65nm DDR2 server parts, and first Desktop and Workstation chips with DDR2/3 followed by FB-DIMM support arriving in 2008.

VoodooPC launches Scott Speed PC lineup

VoodopPC just announced a new special line up to their PCs and notebooks. Scott Speed is a Formula One driver, and the one big americam hope for a title according to Voodoo PC. Windows Vista delayed again?

Everyone waiting for Vista to upgrade their hardware, may need a lot more patience than expected. Gartner predicts that Vista will ship in Q2 2007, and will never make the Christmas deadline given by Microsoft. HP for example, pushed release of Vista powered PCs because it could not install and ship units in time for Christmas within the one month time frame from November to December. That is their official statment at least. Microsoft is still saying that Vista will ship in some form this year, with general availablity by January 2007. Time will tell.

Microsoft to develop physics API

So everyone is talking about doing physics. Ageia started it all with their PhysX PPU, and now the green and red camps, NVIDIA and ATI, are saying they can do it with their GPUs. One better than the other. Microsoft is going to bring them all down to a common ground and will be providing physics API for DirectX. The term Direct Physics, seems to spring from jop posting on the Microsoft website which states: "join a growing team responsible for developing Direct Physics". The posting can be found here.

Major PC firms back DisplayPort

So HDMI is finally catching on, but what would a new technology be without a second firm, saying theirs is bigger, better and cheaper? DisplayPort is being backed by major PC firms, one of which is Dell. It's been designed for higher display resolutions and colour depths for Microsoft Vista. On top of that, it is suppose to be cheap, according to Dell. Well good thing I did not buy a HDMI TV yet.

Asus PhysX cards to ship with Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter

The biggest problem with the new PPU, the PhysX card is the content. Asus has decided to include a few demos of PysX enabled titles and the full version of Ghost Recon: Advance Warfighter. Very nice indeed. The physics and particles in the game do look much nicer with the PPU, but expect a hit in framerates as there is simply more to be rendered by the graphic card.

AMD delays dual-core Turions

AMD planned on releasing the dual-core Turions on the 9th of May, but it seems that the launch was now pushed back about a month, and is most likely going to be held at Computex in Taipei. The dual-core Turion will come in 2 flavors - one codenamed 'Taylor' with 256kb cache per core and one codenamed 'Trinidad' with 512kb cache per core.

Change the battery of your iPod

So you have an iPod and you love it, but the battery is not what it used to be? Up until now the savest solution was to get the battery exchanged from Apple, which usually cost almost as much as a new iPod itself. A firm names Sonnet Technologies has released a battery exchange kit, including the tools, a Video in German, English, French and Japanese, so the ones who are not so tech savvy get point by point instructions. On top of that, the replacement batteries are much stronger than the original. The kit can be had for $25 to $35 US dollars, depending on the iPod model.

ATI acquires Bitboys Oy

ATI Technologies Inc. has acquired privately held Bitboys Oy, a 15-year veteran of the graphics industry for up to EUR 35.2 million (about US$44 million). The final value is subject to certain performance-related conditions. Bitboys brings valuable engineering experience, technology and customer relationships that enhance ATI's existing mobile phone multimedia offerings. Based in Finland, the Bitboys team will be fully integrated in to ATI's Handheld Business Unit, and form the nucleus for a key design centre for ATI in Europe.
ATI gives us what we need to reach the next level...Their market presence and ability to sell our products as part of a complete multimedia lineup will prove incredibly valuable to us. It's a classic win-win, realizing value for both companies
said Mikko Saari, CEO, Bitboys.

Samsung to start selling the Q1 UMPC thru Best Buy

Another mention of Best Buy with a hardware first: Samsung will start selling their UMPC dubbed Q1 thru the Best Buy website. The retail stores will get first shipments this summer. The price for the unit, sporting a seven inch screen, 40GB storage, 900Mhz CPU and 512MB memory, will be $1,099 US dollars. The q1 will start selling on Mai 7th.

Ageia PhysX cards sampled

The dawn of a new era is upon us - well maybe not that dramatically, but Ageia and retail partners have begun sampling the cards made by ASUS and BFG. So it will not be long until we finally see reviews and get to see if the 250 US Dollars are worth the improvement. Fudo seems to think so...

ATI X1900GT available at Best Buy

Well even though the card will be officially revealed on the 9th of Mai, some have already grabbed one at their local Best Buy stores. The card works at 574Mhz in 3D and 500MHz in 2D. The memory is clocked at 594Mhz. The packaging is tagged as a X1900GT, while the card itself is has a green sticker on it, which reads X1900GTO, so it seems ATI had a change of heart at the last minute and renamed the cards.

BF2: Course Four

Yet another BF2 bolus is on the way from EA. This one, the second 3 map booster, will be called "Armored Fury". It will include six new vehicles (3 helicopters, 3 planes), including the A-10 "Warthog" and the MD 530 scout copter. It will include the following maps, all set in the U.S.:

- Operation Midnight Sun: The conflict spreads near the Pacific Ocean in a key battle for the Alaskan port of Valdez, where Chinese forces are attempting to secure much-needed fuel from the pipeline.

- Operation Harvest: The MEC army begins their march East towards the U.S. Capital, and American forces must stall the advance long enough for reinforcements to arrive.

- Operation Road Rage: The MEC forces have infiltrated deep into the USA, and are using the highways to move quickly towards key industrial sites that are dangerously near civilian areas.

Is Apple the next Microsoft?

It looks like Apple is pulling a Microsoft. A security researcher named Tom Ferris has gotten frustrated with Apples lack of security updates. In January, he pointed out seven security holes, and Apple is yet to patch them. Apple says that they did plan to patch the security holes in the next automatic update in Mac OS X.

Barenaked Copyright Reform

Steven Page of the Barenaked Ladies has written a very interesting article for the National Post. Along with dozens of other Juno and Grammy winning artists that collectively have sold tens of millions of albums he has formed the Canadian Music Creators Coalition. The main concern of this new coalition? To fight record label lawsuits against P2P filesharers and the ever tighter grip media giants are exerting on copyright control.
"Much of their lobbying, however, is not about protecting artists or promoting Canadian culture. It is about propping up business models in the recording industry that are quickly becoming obsolete and unsustainable. It is about preserving foreign-based power structures and further entrenching the labels' role as industry gatekeepers. Their lobbying efforts are focused on passing laws that restrict artists' ability to take control of their own music, reach their fans in more direct ways and earn a decent living from music without sacrificing their autonomy."

Chilling Effects

An article published by SecurityFocus is taking center stage in a case now being brought against the security researcher by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Security researchers and legal experts have voiced concern this week over the prosecution of an information-technology professional for computer intrusion after he allegedly breached a university's online application system while researching a flaw without the school's permission.
With breaches against corporate and educational databases on the rise, there would seem to be a greater need for researchers that report flaws as opposed the knee jerk reaction of killing the messenger.Source:SecurityFocus

Tres Amigo's IE Flaws

A mere 48 hours after the last zero day exploit, two more flaws have surfaced for Internet Explorer. The first could be employed to download a malicious ActiveX control, the second is a redirect vulnerability potentially exposing sensitive data. While difficult to exploit the first new flaw could allow an attacker to take complete control of the system. But the vulnerability reportedly does not affect Windows XP SP2 and Windows 2003 SP1, unlike the original zero day exploit which Secunia has rated highly critical. As of now however no in the wild exploits have been detected.Source:SearchSecurity & FrSIRT

Overheating MacBook Pro - mystery solved

A lot of people have been complaining about their MacBook Pros overheating and there have been various firmware upgrades, but for some it did not help. Now a guy took apart his MacBook Pro and discovered huge amounts of thermalpaste on the 3 hot parts, the CPU, GPU and chipset. He cleaned it up, applied a thin layer, which dropped his temps over more than 15 degrees. The official manual of the MacBook pro shows how the techs are to apply thermal paste - a whole syringe per pad...

7900 Quad SLI Benchmarks

Xbit has put up an in-depth look at the NVIDIA GeForce 7900 Quad SLI. Including ten first person 3D shooters.
Virtually all computer games today are running pretty fine in 1600x1200 resolution with anisotropic filtering and all the quality settings set to the maximum on a Radeon X1900 XT graphics card, however, there are quite a number of advanced users who want to enjoy their video games on 24" or 30" displays with 1920x1200 or 2560x1600 resolution. Nvidia believes that for this kind of customers even two graphics cards are not enough and four will be exactly what will satisfy their demanding needs.

Nvidia calls 2560x1600 resolution as XHD, or extreme high definition, and especially targets its quad SLI offering at those, who happen to own a large screen 30" display and want to play the games in native wide-screen resolution.
Of course our review is at the top of the board, but I know how lazy everyone is on Sunday's (or burned out on Monday's) so there is no reason you have to scroll all the way back up, just click here.

Water Works

Generally speaking water and electronics...not a good thing. Which is why when I tell the average Joe I watercool I get these really weird looks. Soon that may change, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University and Harvard University have demonstrated the advantages of using water to stabilize memory bits for ultra-dense storage devices based on nano-technology.
